Bibs are great but unless you're banging through legit pow often, they're a bit overkill.

Stayed at Sun Peaks over Christmas break. Snow was awesome, and although it was cold, it was awesome fun. At one point, it was -30 with windchill near the top. At the top of one chair, the wind was literally pushing us around. Totally not worth freezing my hand to get a snapchat.

Some pics.

I honestly didn't really mind the cold; it just means less people came out. There were literally no lines at any of the lifts till about 11 am, which was sick.

Just got back from manning park. If you're a diamond pro , you'll be okay.. But If you're a noob-semiokay, those chairlifts are fuckin garbage.. My god. Makes cypress lifts feel like a flying magic carpet. They go so fast.. And the staff today were incompetent and fighting over who " helps the ppl stand proper so the chair comes right behind you without trying to take you out "

2 cm? What forecast were you looking at? Everybody knew it was going to dump all day. :smug:

It was a little unfortunate about all the stuff under sky chair; basically a foot of fresh on top of the hardest hard pack. There were some sweet lines to be had on the side of ripcord.
The real magic was happening on bowen, horizon, and humpty dumpty. They totally could have opened them fully, but I guess the creek crossings were what was keeping them.

Didn't have a go on top gun though :dead:

Probably one of the best cypress days in recent memory

For years, I've been going to Cypress Mountain and been boarding for pretty long. Once in whistler 4 years ago.
I picked up a new freestyle board (just the board) which is designed for more ground work and buttering.
So a quick question comes to mind, which mountain would you think has more flat and smooth run? Cypress "Panorama" run is not too bad. And the beginner run which I forgot what it's called. The one with a super slow chair lift lol.
Looking at kakucaekz's pictures of Sun Peak, that looks so amazing. Wide, flat, smooth run that's great for buttering and ground work. Even a nice terrain park as well. Although it's quite of a far drive. Maybe I'll consider going with a few friends and stay in.
I don't remember any runs in Grouse Mountain and I've never been to Seymour.

What do you guys think? Any inputs would be great!
Thanks

I feel like buttering and ground tricks you can do at literally any mountain. Grouse has the cut, which is just one long green run. And besides that single steep section where the jump line is located its a pretty easy grade.

Cypress as both panorama and collins.

Fuck seymour.

Whistler is just a massive playground. I mean seriously you could spend days up there and have fun absolutely everywhere.

Big white is sweet. They usually have a sweet small rail line which is fun to learn presses and butters on. Also tons of terrain here as well.

Havn't been to sun peaks in a few years, i'm, sure its good though.

you want to find a run with as little pitch as possible.

To me, the first that comes to mind [locally] is panorama. Which is on cypress.

That pitch that is perfect is usually the one that people find trouble for keeping momentum. about 2-300 feet from the the strap point.

With a moderate pitch you'll feel more comfortable with changing your body position constantly, and it will give you more confidence to try it on a slightly steeper pitch.

Once you get the balance points going, you'll really enjoy it when you take it to floating pow.

have you tried sport junkies on broadway? sometimes you can find board boots and bindings for like $200-$400

And for a board type, i'd recommend a rocker. they dont clip the snow as often so you'll spend more time on your feet. but if you think you'll progress quickly maybe a camber would be for you

Went up to Cypress on Wednesday night and the snow was decent, kind of like spring riding, mostly soft, bumpy in spots from being ridden on all day, but there is just not enough snow. There were a few spots where boulders and rocks were poking out and just too much risk of ruining my board. Will have to wait until we get another dump before I go back, but glad I've finally been able to use my pass! Forecast calls for heavy snow next weekend, so fingers crossed!

I got super fed up about the local snow as well but I got a deal with Big Red Cats that I couldn't refuse. Super steep tree shredding and tons of bumps and pillows to boost off of. Plus the snow was actually good in there. Rode the next day at Red Mountain and it was absolute shit, had no snow. When it does snow there it looks like it would be an epic mountain. You can literally drop any direction off the peaks and catch a cat track back to a chair.

So if you guys are getting desperate keep an eye out on Big Red Cats website. They do last minute deals all the time to fill their cats. Oh and you can ski freshies weeks after a storm because their terrain is so big.

Also planned to do a cat boarding day.

My friends and I didn't even book a snowboarding trip to hemlock like we always do. I don't think they're even open for skiing and snowboarding.

Just for all of you, I'll go XC Manning on Saturday and report back.

Very good coverage. On piste it's well groomed and hard pack. The addition to Manning's groomer fleet is really helping.
Off piste (backcountry and Apple Bowl) is a hard rain crust underneath a layer of surface hoar. Breaking through the crust has 3-12" of soft snow.
There are no deep issues in the snowpack. The avalanche.ca snowpack summary is spot-on.

Worth the drive if you're jonesing for groomers on a fully covered slope :toot:

Good thing I'm saving up for a big vacation trip later this year so this is the perfect excuse to save up.

I haven't gone even once this season, so there's no temptation or any sort of momentum to make me want to go.
I've basically written off this entire season, cause I don't have the time or the cash to make a road trip to do a multi-day snowboarding trip out of town.

So it's basically local mountains or this season is a write off for me. Whichever...

On that note, I started 3 seasons ago, and every season seems to offer less and less snow.
I don't even know what to make of this anymore.

Whistler is ridiculously expensive...
I don't like how it closes in the late afternoon so you can't even get a full day's worth of snowboarding.

I think you can get something called an Edge Card. Basically a discount card. But it's still $100~.
I've always just used Craigslist to get cheaper tickets.

Sportcheck is not a bad place if you're new and looking for affordable stuff more on the entry/mid level side. Prices are good when their winter stuff is on sale. I got my pants and jacket from Sportchek. Probably the best place to get the clothes imo unless you're fully commited and want to spend $200+ on the big name brand jacket and pants at snowboard shops.

For actual snowboarding shops, I would recommend the Boardroom Clearance store (besides their main store) on West 4th. All the other stores along West 4th aren't clearance stores and I find their gear and clothes cost way too much for a casual/beginner snowboarder.

So Hemlock has closed for the season if anyone cares

Holy fucking shit.
What has happened to this season.

Whis has changed from years ago. I'm going to sound like a jaded old fart here but with the introduction of the peak-to-peak, it killed the vibe of whistler. As soon as you have a major lift crossing over top of another lift; your mountain has become a circus.
Then these RFID gates... notice how there are no gates at the T-Bars or Franz's Chair? There go the last of the Mohicans.
When was the last time Franz's was open anyway? My forest laps are uselessly extended by riding Big Red.

But you sometimes just can't argue with terrain. Whis' is big for a reason. Anywho...

Yes, Sportchek is a good place for entry level gear. Hell, I even rock some gear from Sportchek through good deals I've found, mysterious high-end gear in-stoke, (my stash of ski wax is 100% sportchek (the reliably cheapest place for fluro-wax)), and 4% cashback ordered online from GreatCanadainRebates (pm me for referral because you can't post it publicly anymore).
If you're buying a board from Sportchek, please please PLEASE do not get a foam core shitty Firefly board. Please. It will ruin your progress and perception of snowboarding.

gonna try out snowboarding for the first time at whist next weekend! lookin to get my own gear as opposed to rentals. any shops with relatively cheap stuff? not really lookin to spend $500 for pants >.< thx!

Get used gear or honestly just rent, the kind of gear you want for your first day up is not the gear you want your 10th day up.

If you are looking to get into riding, now is a great time to be in the market. This season was so shitty that many places have so much damn stock cause they never really had a big rush. I saw some crazy sales for gear when I was down in bellingham and seattle.

With that said I wouldn't go up to the hill with the conditions we currently have, I havnt been myself, but I can only imagine the type of shitty conditions that are currently on the mountains. It would ruin the entire sport for someone if the first time you go up its a miserable piece of shit.

Looks like whistler is going to be a mix of snow and rain in this next little storm were having, if you are really keen on going and willing to spend $100+ for your first day even though you won't be able to ride any of the mountain, then just wait till after this weekend and go to whistler. Otherwise wait till next year.

I always say to beginners not to waste their time going to whistler, its expensive, and you don't get any of your moneys worth when you spend all your time on one run falling on your ass all day long.

If money doesn't matter, and you just want to try it out, then by all means go to whistler, just go on a nicer day.

If you aren't new to the sport, just have a look at the forecast, if you want to go, go for it. Whistler doesn't disappoint very often.

End of season is the best time to buy used, I don't know about the hills down there but up at Big White all the Aussies end up selling gear dirt cheap at the end of the season once they realize they have no way to get it home.

The rains also affected skiing on Whistler, with some lifts located in higher elevations on Whistler and Blackcomb closed for the day. An icy pond also formed around the Glacier Express. Ski Callaghan has also announced that operations have been shut down over the long weekend.

“Heavy rain and standing water are currently making it impossible to groom until at least Tuesday,” Ski Callaghan said in a statement. A 50 per cent discount on tickets for Family Day has been rescheduled for March 23.

But we know you do, and so do we. The storm we are weathering is going to continue tomorrow. We anticipate that, as was the case today, no alpine lifts will be opening. Operations teams are working hard to protect runs from water damage and keep the ditches and creeks flowing.

Avalanche danger is very high and when the storm clears we will be hard at work to let you guys at the snow that is falling in the high elevations. Manning park is beautiful. 2 Chairs and 12 runs open. There was some pow on certain areas. The snow was nice and dry. Wasn't packed with people at all, we finished runs and immediately got right back on the chairlifts within 2 minutes. The chairlift rides are quite abit long. Around 2pm it got packed so we finished 1 last run and took off at 3. Absolutely loved it and plan on going back in a few weeks. It's worth the 2+ hour drive because it's in the middle of nowhere and the snow is great!

That's pretty cheap, I'm debating pulling the $750 I pay for a seasons pass and putting that into a big trip like Japan next year. Since the clowns at the hill changed the day pass pricing system after selling the seasons passes (it now takes 11 days to pay it off vs 7 before) I'll barely pay off my pass this year and a bunch of those days I wouldn't have gone up if I didn't have a pass.

So apparently Grouse opened today and Cypress is to open tomorrow..

http://www.vancouversun.com/travel/skiguide/cms/binary/10858291.jpg?size=620x400

The local ski season is back — as of this afternoon.

Grouse Mountain is opening today at 3 p.m..

With the recent cold weather and several days of snowmaking, it’s ready to welcome skiers and riders on the Paradise Bowl via the Greenway Chair.

The hill will be open from 9 a.m.to 10 p.m. seven days a week at general admission rates.

The Paradise Bowl terrain park is to reopen tomorrow morning.

“It has taken a little patience and perseverance, but we are thrilled to welcome the return of winter to the Peak of Vancouver,” Grouse Mountain general manager Michael Cameron said in a statement. “The cool temperatures and clear skies have provided ideal conditions for our snowmaking efforts, which is perfect timing as we look forward to a fun-filled Spring Break here at Grouse Mountain.”

Cypress to open Wednesday

Tomorrow it is for Cypress Mountain’s opening from top to bottom.

Today’s 6 a.m. update reports that it had another good night of snowmaking.

“We kept going this morning and it looks like another good opportunity tonight! We're targeting Wednesday to open with Eagle Express and Easy Rider Quad in operation with top to bottom skiing and riding.”

The mountain reminds that this year is very similar to 2010, when everyone had all but lost hope, only for great conditions to present: “Down and out in February, then tons of snow in March and who can forget that 55-centimetre dump of powder snow on April 10 – one of the most epic days ever!”

The website has pictures to prove it all from that year.

“Our season normally extends into late April so we still have plenty of time to run into a great stretch of weather and snow,” the site says. “While the season so far has not been our best, keep in mind that huge snowfalls late in the season are very common in low snow years….Keep those snow dances going and hopefully we'll get some epic March & April snow!”

Grouse re-opens today, Cypress to re-open Wednesday (http://www.vancouversun.com/travel/skiguide/Grouse+opens+today+Cypress+open+Wednesday/10858283/story.html)

From a email I received from cypress

Cypress Re-Opens the Downhill Area for Winter 2014/15 2.0

Our "Best In the Business" Snowmaking Crew killed it last night with huge volumes of Snow made on Eagle and Easy! We're still making snow this afternoon and the piles on the upper Mountain are monsters - this is officially the most snow we've ever made in March already, including 2010!

We started pushing snow this morning to be ready for opening tomorrow morning - Easy Rider will open for 9 AM. We'll be planning to make snow right through until opening tomorrow as the snowmaking window closes, so we'll wait to move the guns off Jasey Jay in the morning and plan to get Eagle Express open for 11 AM. Thursday we'll have everything turning for 9 AM.

With the big Snow last night we'll now plan to get Upper Jasey Jay open as well as Upper Maelle Ricker (Upper Fork) through the Fork Elbow, then down through the District area and out Lower Jasey Jay to the bottom of Eagle Express - all for Intermediate or Expert Skiers and Riders only.

Easy Rider will also be operating with Runway open for Beginners - should be some Big Fun after this unwelcome break in the season.

The Downhill Snow School will remain on standby until we open more beginner terrain.

Cross Country Skiing, Snowshoeing and the Tube Park will be closed until we receive more natural snow. Please stay in touch with our website for updates.

Anybody goes up to Cypress please report back. Considering Saturday morning to get some use out of this pass, unless it's all rocks.

Was up yesterday and the day before.
It's perfect greasy, soft, clean, spring snow; remarkable really. Not dirty with gravel like when they were trying to scrape the parking lot pile of shit over the mountain.

Barely any terrain open and no park. There are remnants of kickers can pop off. If you're satisfied with ripping fork and lower fork over and over, sure, I guess it's worth a couple hours if you just want to exercise your pass. Not worth it at all to pay real $ for a lift ticket.

EDIT: Their website says they have a park open now.

I went up on Monday. It's okay, only 1 run open and you need to get there for first chair and only have a good 4 hours max before the snow gets all chopped up and slushy.

Cypress Mountain Downhill Passholders - Save 80% Off 2015/16 Spring Pass Rates! (http://echo3.bluehornet.com/hostedemail/email.htm?CID=25622830422&ch=29A5889F3F2E6F25B4C9A2530FFE7167&h=8613362be09d3609d663deeea4d5ddeb&ei=sM5fJUANk)

WoT warning.

To all of our Valued and Patient 2014/15 Season Passholders:

The 2014/15 Season unfortunately appears to be coming to a close despite all of our efforts and our heart-felt wishes to have a typical Cypress Mountain winter. The weather forecast looking ahead shows diminished hope that we’ll get enough snowfall to warrant reopening this Spring however, as always, we will remain ready to go and we’ll do our best to get everyone a few more turns and some Cypress Beach action!

We‘re of course disappointed in the season overall and we recognize that the quality of the snow sports experience on many days was not the norm for Cypress Mountain. We made a huge amount of quality snow during the season but got virtually wiped out on four separate occasions with unearthly amounts of rain – one time we had already started pairing up the animals when it finally stopped! Despite the weather, the efforts of all of our Team were 100% focused on providing our guests with a great experience no matter what the cost – we always held onto hope that a dump of snow was just around the corner and for certain we were going to be ready to make the most of it! Alas although it hasn’t come yet we never gave up – in the Downhill Area after we were melted out through February our “Best in the Business” Snowmaking Crew got a window of opportunity to make record amounts of Snow in early March and our Grooming Guys tilled out some fine cord for a great comeback with really good conditions. Almost 1,000 Passholder’s came out to enjoy a complimentary BBQ meal on the Crazy Raven Sundeck – not everyone skied or snowboarded but the Burgers helped to sooth the pain that the weather has inflicted on us all.

In the Nordic Area – we hauled thousands of bucket loads of snow from other areas of the mountain and did whatever we could to try to fortify the snow in the trails but we just couldn’t outrun the rain – we did our absolute best!

Looking ahead we’re very optimistic that this Season can’t happen again soon, so we’re planning plenty of exciting initiatives for a great winter next Season – some were already planned but we couldn’t pull the trigger, and some are new that we thought up as we watched out the window waiting for snow clouds to appear. It’s going to be even more Fun next year at Cypress Mountain in addition to simply enjoying the Most Lifts, the Most Terrain, and the Most Winter Sports on the North Shore and we can’t wait.

Looking ahead to 2015/16 our State of the Art Snowmaking System in the Downhill Area and our Season Pass Assurance Program give you the confidence that Cypress Mountain will offer you the best value for your local Season Pass investment.

We wish to explain below the benefits of our 2014/15 Season Pass Assurance Program and what it means to each of our Pass categories relative to our season end assessment of overall operations this year.

Downhill Area Passes – 80% Discount off your 2015/16 Pass if you purchase by our Early Bird Deadline – please read below:

Although we have managed to operate the Downhill Area for 84 days so far (many with just partial day operation) and 24 days on the Cross County Trails we recognized in the development of the Assurance Program a year ago that there would need to be some Passholder expectations applied to the terms and conditions.

In the Downhill Area we had described 2 Quad Chairs operating for seven hours as constituting a day of operation. According to this requirement and not counting an additional 37 partial days of operation since November 15:

- for the G8 Pass Category we operated for 47 days of the assured 100 days, entitling a discount of 53% on the purchase of a 2015/16 G8 Pass;
- again not counting the 37 partial days, we operated 28 days of the assured 76 days for the Silver Pass Category entitling a discount of 63% on the purchase of your 2015/16 Silver Pass.

We are proud of our efforts to provide some great days of Skiing and Riding through the season despite the overall lack of snow, however we recognize that the variety of trails and off-piste opportunities that we normally provide were not always available.

In consideration of this, and with the support of Boyne Resorts, we are very pleased to Bonus up our Season Pass Assurance offer to 80% off the purchase of 2015/16 Passes for both G8 and Silver Pass Categories if purchased prior to the Early Bird Deadline. We will offer the 80% discount off our already discounted rates for both our Spring Sale (deadline May 31st), and our Early Bird Sale (deadline September 15th). Take note that after September 15th we will revert to the 53% discount for G8 Passes and 63% for Silver Passes according to the specifics of the Season Pass Assurance Program.

Tl;Dr version:
2015-16 Silver passes are $65.80
2015-16 Gold passes are $119.80

Went to whistler today. Sunny as fuck, my face is sunburnt, and the jumps in choker park suck. Black park was closed for a contest. Saw Max Parrot and McMorris throwing down which was so amazing.
