Its september. Gear is arriving at the shops and the video premieres are happening. Whats going on this year? Who's got big trips planned? Who's buying new gear? Is this year going to be as terrible as last year? Lets discuss!
Looking at new boards this year. Thinking of going with a Lib TRS 159 to replace my Rome Agent rocker. I'm a decently aggressive rider, 20 years under my belt but mellowed out on the park a bit in my old age. Still hit jumps up into the 40+ foot range in the parks, but prefer riding pow (obviously.) Any other suggestions for boards?
I'm fucking stoked for this year.

I've ridden the TRS a few times but honestly wasn't a fan. Felt too squirly and loose but thats probably due to the fact the board is mostly rockered. My go to board for the last couple years has been my 158 Ride Berzerker. I'm kind of similar as I've been riding almost 10 years now and I mostly stick to pow these days. Anyway I love the Berzerker so much I'm buying another one this year to replace my beat up one from last year. This board straight chargers everything. I manly ride it in pow and its handled everything from the deepest days in Japan to icey shit days up here at our local hills.
The board I'm really stoked about this year is the new 420! Going to be replacing my old Sickstick that I snapped last year.

I think I'm going to spend a week for my 30th up at Baker at the end of February. Treat myself for making it that far.
Bought this today. Hope its not too squirrelly but being that I went 159 and dropped about 20 lbs from last year I think it will hold me well.

I've been stoked for this season since the end of last season. I keep debating buying new skis since my main planks (2004 K2 Seth Pistols) will be 10 years old this season and the bindings are heavy as balls but I promised myself when I got them that I'd ride them til they broke. I have other skis too but they're just for ripping groomers with rookies (cheap K2's) or big powder days (Fatypus Alotta Powders). I'd ask for suggestions on replacements for the Pistols but I doubt anyone would remember what they ride like anymore haha.
Trip wise I've got my Big White pass already bought and I plan to hit up Revelstoke as well this year, maybe do some heli/cat skiing as well if I can get a deal. Powder King and Sun Peaks are also on the radar as I've never been to either.

Can someone suggest to me some must do ski resort/mountains to do. I get 10 days off at a time and wanting to do a road trip down and shred some gnar.
Not sure if I want to do small small/backcountry, or go big and hit Jackson Hole or something. Would appreciate everyone's suggestions.

Depending on how far you wanna go, Steamboat Springs, CO is #1 on my skiing bucket list.
Look into this pass. The Mountain Collective 2014/15 Pass: AltaSnowbird, Aspen Snowmass, Jackson Hole, Mammoth, Ski Banff-Lake Louise-Sunshine, Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows, Whistler Blackcomb (http://mountaincollective.com/?_ga=1.188536939.2954110.1410459433)
If you're planning on doing a road trip it could pay it self off pretty quickly. Its almost worth it for whistler alone. After your 2 days are done you get day passes at half off.

Also stoked for this season.
After riding 2-3 or more days per week in my late teens through early twenties, I've just about been retired since having kids, having gone only 3 times in the last 7 years. This year though, my 7 year old has no choice but to ride the Barbie Burton I bought for her when she was only 6 months old.
I've waited long enough.

I'm unbelievably stoked.
Cypress pass was cheaper than last year.
Goal is 50 days riding the local hills, 5 Whis days, and at least 3 tours.
Just booked a trip to Hokkaido and Geneva in January.
Going to pick up a pair of new sticks at that sale and get my two-plank skills up to where my one plank skill is.
Praise Ullr!

To each their own. I started at seymour and was there for 3 straight seasons having a blast. They have an affordable student pass rate as well as being some 25ish minutes from my house. I worked my schedule out so I'd be there on certain weekdays and it was never too busy. Most days I'd be able to ride straight to the front of the line before having to unbuckle.

Theres so much to tell really so I'll try and keep this short. Most foreigners go to Niseko because its easy to get there and it pretty much dumps for 4 months straight. Especially in January it can snow an average of 30 cm's per day. I remember one day it was literally waist deep outside the front door of my building. It was ridiculous on the hill. Niseko is also good if your Japanese skills are kind of lacking. These days because of all the western tourists most hotels and lodging companies are bringing in english speaking staff to make the whole experience just that much easier. Hokkaido also has a ton of really sick resorts not far from Niseko. I can think of 4 or 5 within a 45 minute drive of Niseko. They all get retarded amounts of snow and the crowds usually get smaller the further you get from Niseko.
A good friend of mine started up a Japanese ski holiday company recently. Kelvin can pretty much tell you where to stay and how to get there and where to find all the goods. He spent a good couple years in Japan so he knows what he's talking about. If you drop my name maybe he can cut you a deal.

Don't know if I need any new gear this year, most of my stuff is only 1 or 2 seasons old.
Might get some accessories when the new gear starts rolling in, the basics like gloves, goggles, a helmet, etc.
Right now I am reserving judgement on this coming season, last season was such an epic fail, and long range forecasts (which I think are fucking non-sense really) say this season is going to be even shittier.
Nonetheless I have a few buddies planning to hit some mountains in the states. Last year I spent almost an entire week at Brighton, and it was beyond awesome.
Definitely interested in a RS meet at CYP.
anyone here a snowboard instructor? looking into getting my level 1 casi certification. Im planing to do this as a part time job along with my full time job. I would like to know more on how the industry is.

I'd like to get out this year. Didn't even go once last year due to the shit weather and on my second outing the year prior I cracked a rib and separated my shoulder on 2 separate bails. The cracked rib was manageable but when my shoulder separated that was it. That sucked hard :(. I ain't young no mo! No more big jumps for me anymore.
Currently riding a Lib Skate Banana and I'm more than happy with it. Tons of flex for noodling around and jibs. I mostly just like hitting deep pow and carving big and wide.

Sadly going to not buy a ski pass this year. Realized for me to go on a weekday, I'd have to get my car on the other side of Cambie Bridge, get through downtown rush hour, over the Lions Gate bridge, all during peak time. Off at 5/530, probably wont get up to Cypress until almost 7?
I'll probably just pick up a GMC anyways, that way I can attempt that some days and save on weekends when we have a RS meet. :)

Got a free pair of goggles this year,
Got a new slide stick with some new binders this year,
Got a sweet schedule for work that has me finish everyday at 1530....
I ride solo, and have mainly ridden solo... You'll find new friends to slide snow with and chances are, you'll increase your skill level over your friends.
Nothing wrong with going up with a solid crew, but don't turn away fun sliding time if your friends don't go, just go and enjoy the ride!

It's true I always progressed so much more quickly by myself. There are times where friends can help with tips and such, but for me, just being able to hit the same thing over and over without thinking about something else was usually the biggest factor to stomping a trick.
I have no pass this year so I'm gonna be hitting wherever I feel like. I hope cypress has that air bag ready to go again, I'm hunting for that rodeo 5 this year. Grouse better also have a massive cut line like they did two years ago. That final 60 foot step down was outrageously fun, even if I was too chicken shit to do anything but straight air it.
westopher
10-27-2014, 09:40 PM
I wouldn't even hit that big jump on the cut anymore. A few years ago sure, but I can't hack it anymore. I did hit a couple jumps in the black park last year though. They are similar sizes, but built so much better. The park builders in the city are not what they used to be. As for the progression, my best friend and I really push each other, and we grew up riding with his older brother who is amazing and actually has a few full page shots in snowboard canada. I find I only get better when I ride with people better than me. Keeps me pushing to be at their level.
underscore
10-28-2014, 02:11 PM
IMO you'll always progress the fastest riding with people who are better than you, you're more inclined to push when you're distracted by having to keep up than if you're just at a "comfortable" pace with people at the same skill level as you.
Vangruver
10-29-2014, 07:51 AM
Its true, not denying that what so ever, but when you've progressed quicker than your close friends care to, one tends to want to venture out and seek other means for excitement.
When I say I ride solo, it truly doesn't mean that, simply because I usually find others that are usually out as well, and there are times when either party will tag along with one another.
So I guess I ride solo initially, then wind up making new friends. *shrug*
meme405
10-29-2014, 09:39 AM
I think I ride differently then you guys.
My all mountain level is at a point where I can competently ride with pretty much anyone. i'm not struggling to keep up with anyone.
When I talk about progression I am pretty much solely talking about learning and stomping tricks. In which case other people have pretty little to do, its all about balls, and the practice time to throw it a hundred times before you stick it 50% of the time.
I'm by no means a park rat either. It's just where most of my progression happens these days.

If you're just starting out then get a Sportcheck special or something off of craigslist. Board should come up to about your mouth or so, height wise.
You'll need a board, bindings, boots, pants, gloves, jacket, goggles, and a helmet if you so choose.
Spend as little as possible, no use being one of those asian (not saying you are just they are the worst for it) folks that have about 5k worth of shit on their bodies but can't ride for shit.

I disagree
Invest in gear that helps you stay dry and stay warm without breaking the bank
Yes if that means you're more comfortable in goretex or a more pricey jacket/pants then so be it. You do not want to feel discouraged if you're wet and soaked, then have to drive home damp and feeling like ass
As for a snowboard? Go with a reference to weight instead of measuring up with height.
I've preached this method time and time again and for good reason. As gear now is based on mass instead of leverage. You can be a twig and weight next to nothing, and buy a board based on height and have it feel too stiff. I've seen it before and it holds true. Especially for someone that's starting out
westopher
11-05-2014, 10:22 AM
Everything vangruver said is the exact same advice I'd give. Get gear that can hold up to a full day of riding and let you progress comfortably, and talk to someone who knows about sizing a snowboard. It's 100% based on flex patterns, effective edge and shapes suited to your weight and also not to be forgotten, foot size.

Definitely don't skimp out on gear including boots. Being cold and uncomfortable will ruin your day. You can get away with a budget(within reason) board and bindings.
westopher
11-05-2014, 10:52 AM
Yeah and I do agree with Gab in the sense, dont go out and blow your wad on retardedly expensive stuff, but don't go too cheap. You can easily get everything, brand new, and quality for under 2k. Its not that much considering a lift ticket costs 120 bucks at whistler. Its an expensive hobby, but there is nothing in the world I'd rather do at any time.
jshen
11-05-2014, 11:37 AM
Amen to the advice vangruver gave. As to budget, spend whatever you are comfortable with. If that means 5k or 500$, so be it. I would also recommend renting or borrowing gear from a friend the first 2 trips to see if you enjoy it enough to invest your hard earned coin. As to where to splurge and spend more coin, my vote is on boots and pants. Your feet have to be comfortable and pants because you will be sitting alot, more so when you're learning. Nothing worst than foot pain and a cold/wet ass.

IMO rent at least the board (ideally boots too) the first few times out, get a feel for what type of board you like and how boots feel after a few hours. You'll have a lot easier time buying the right boots once you know what comfortable ones feel like to you. If you're going to buy everything, boots are the single most important piece of kit you have, everything else you can skimp on a lot easier.

GoreTex is a great product, they have near monopoly on the consumer market. If you want to use real gear made for off-piste use, look into hardshells made with eVent, polartec's NeoShell and schoeller's c_change. It will boggle your mind the options available once you look into other brands.

Are there thin gortex/waterproof gloves? I don't like using the big bulky ones which are normally what gloves are like.
I have friends who's hands stay miraculously warm. Most of them use pipe style gloves. Their just like thin insulation layers, with padding to protect your hands from snow burn, and the edges of your board.
I personally have cold hands, so I run Burton AK gloves, with an Under Armor innerliner. This allows me to shed a layer easily when not necessary to reduce bulk and keep cool. Also on really cold days allows me to get to my phone and use it without taking off all my hand protection.
(the UA stuff has fingertip things which allow you to use your phone while wearing them, and it works really well).

Its EARLY. Thats a crapshoot for snow conditions. It will definitely be fun, but who knows how much snow will have fallen by then. Its pretty likely its not going to be too filled in. They can get hit hard by snow in a pretty short period of time, but consider thats only 1 month away, and there hasn't been a head start on precipitation.

It's easiest just to rent from the mountain you're going to, only marginally cheaper to rent elsewhere. Went with a friend starting out and she rented pants and jacket and everything from Ski & Snowboard rentals | Vancouver (http://www.sportsjunkies.com/ski/vancouver_ski_rentals/)
The upside to renting off mountain (especially if renting clothes) is that you know you've got your gear before you get up there, in case they have a low supply in your size.

But thats a lot to spend at this moment so I think I'll only upgrade the bindings because mine are currently the ones that strap on top of the foot part, so it pinches, as opposed to toe-cap ones.

I picked up a set of ski's from them 2 years ago and a couple sets of poles last year. Good thing about Evo is that they put any duties/extra charge within their shipping costs at the final checkout. it's still pricey to ship it up here but if the item is heavily discounted, it works out with their shipping price.
Not to sure about bindings but when I shipped my ski's, Shipping was about $120. Steep but you just gotta weigh the discount to their shipping. *Great Service from them, never a hassle, no hidden costs.
*And that's the fkn dream right there.

Went up to Cypress today. All rain. I think it would have been busier if it was nice out.
Got soaked to the bone.
Good thing is that i got myself a new pair of goggles.
Oakley Airbrakes in army green frame with vr50 pink iridium lens which included a dark grey replacement lens.
Can't wait to use them at revelstoke next week.
On the topic of gloves, I need a pair as well. Any other recommendations?

make sure your goggles are not overlapping/covering your toque, scarf, face mask etc.
in other words, the foamy cushion part on the goggles should have direct contact with your face

Oakley Airbrakes
Look out. I've had to RMA two sets of lenses on my Airbrakes because of fog between the lenses. Hang them up to dry after every day of riding. I drive home with them draped on my rear view mirror every time. My 7 year old shitty Spy goggles are more reliable than these ones. When touring, I can't afford to be stuck on top of a mountain and not be able to pick a safe line down. I pack 2 pairs of goggles now.
Speaking of touring, went up to Manning on Saturday just to have a look around. They're not open yet. One lap inside the resort boundaries, one lap down through Apple Bowl; it was terrible. Snow had the look of wind scour but it had a rain crust on top.

Big White was horrible yesterday, what little snow is up that has become solid ice. It was a decent warmup for the season at least, I forgot just how damn heavy my skis are though. Right now I'm on 2004 K2 Seth Pistols with bindings that I hate, I still love my K2's but I'm being very tempted by some of the new rocker tech coming out. Does it really make that much of a difference, ie is rocker as big of a jump as shaped skis or fat skis were? Or is it more of an "ehh it's nice to have"?

like the other guy said above, you just try and do something new every trip. It takes time and practice.. like almost everything else. When I first started snowboarding, i went with people that were way better than me. it was a challenge every time i went up with these guys. trying to keep up, doing the same trails/ runs. Some days were good, some days were bad but in the end i learned a lot from it.
At this point, I have surpassed the skill level of the people i normally go with. The more trips you make the better of course.
I go with a bunch of different groups now: beginner, inter, advanced. Even when I go with beginners, it gives me the opportunity to tweak small tricks (butters, small kickers, etc). No trip should be a trip wasted. make the most of any opportunity.
I've been snowboarding for about 4 seasons (went 3 times last season though..) and I feel as though i could classify myself as upper intermediate for sure (not to gloat). If you put the effort in, you'll get the results.. like every sport, things take time.

RFID(Radio Frequency Identification Device) FAQ (http://www.whistlerblackcomb.com/the-mountain/whats-new/rfid.aspx)
Q: Can chips ‘survive’; in pieces of clothing, washing machines and dryers?
Answer: Yes. RFID chips are designed in such a way as to survive normal wear and tear for years, washing and drying included. The RFID access card may turn blue as the thermal ink may be activated by the extreme heat however it will still work at the lift.

I did the same thing before I went to Whistler and they said they dont care it anymore. So I thought I would go to Whistler to buy it. It so happens that they started this new thing where they give ppl RFID passes that are reloadable/reuseable. So instead of employees scanning each lift ticket before the Gondola, they have this machine that you walk by which scans the RFID cards. They advise you to place the RFID cards in your chest pockets, away from any electronics so it wont interfere with the machine scanning the card.

Don't look at the number of days, look at the hours spent. I only get to ski once a week but when I do I'm on the slopes for 6-8 hours. There aren't a lot of other sports that you do for 6-8 hours each time you do them.

How do people get good at snowboarding when the opportunity to do it is so limited compared to other sports?
There's no such thing as limitations. If you really want to progress in anything you do, you will find a means to do so.
Snow sports used to be an elitist type of sport, where the participant was required a fair amount of money to partake in the act.
Now a days' it's VERY affordable to get yourself going.
However the key is determination. Don't look towards the weather, and don't look towards the conditions. If you really want to learn and progress, you'll just go and do it.
If you treat your equipment like they're precious metals, you'll get an emotional attachment towards it, and cringe everytime you get a nick or a scratch on it.
To be honest? who cares?! Yes, you might not be able to resell it if its damaged, but If you bought the gear to use it, then use it.
Because the last 2+ years haven't been the most favorable doesn't mean that the next couple years will be as well.
And remember, when it's summer here, it's winter in australia and new zealand ;)
You can always take a vacation and continue your endless winter, if snowboarding is what you like!
Case in point. I know of a girl that had chased snow for 10 months straight. When i last saw here a couple years ago, she was this little grom that I coached into hitting a 50 footer...and now she took that skill and transformed herself into this rad shred that is able to throw all four 540s! All because she REALLY LOVED snowboarding!

rolled up to the border yesterday, told the officer im going to mt baker. He asked me if i was planning on driving my car up. I was like yes, he said your car is lowered, you aint gonna make it up there lol. Challenge accepted.
I made it up there, and all the hillbillys in their awd and 4x4 were staring at me haha.
on my way down, i saw 2 SUV in the ditch...muahahah....It aint the car, its the driver.
There was tons of snow up there.

I'm supposed to tour baker Tuesday. Original plan was for today but there was too big risk of avi.
Pics like this get me so stoked.
Hopefully there will still be freshies left.

Had the same thing happen to me lol the boarder guard said that I wouldn't make it up to baker. "Your car is too low" what makes you think that you can make it up.
