ICBC

I'm sure we're all well aware of the current situation.
Just curious what peoples thoughts are on it.
Thoughts on solutions so far?

The obvious solution would be to get rid of ICBC, but if not I'd like to see insane rate hikes for shitty drivers so they can't afford to drive, higher rates for cars that have headlights that are worth as much as someone else's actual car, and figuring out a way to cap how much is paid out for certain types of claims.

Oh and lower rates for good drivers lol.

they are fucked up plain and simple, I don't understand why our government doesn't do what the other provinces do with vehicle insurance.

I'm iffy on caps for injuries. Some of them are flat out fraud while some are reasonable but they consider minor. My dad was on his motorcycle riding in front of a large truck and the car behind him ripped around him on the right only to jump right back in front of him sending my dad sliding down the road. ICBC offered him 3000$. His jeans melted and his leg now has scars along with his entire left arm.

Meanwhile someone I know gets in a slight fender bender and gets 20,000$. Total crap. I often see an accident at an intersection near my parents house all the time. I've seen them happen in person and had to give my number as a witness for them. The last one I saw barely made a dent in the back of the ladies bumper. She got out and was fine, swapped info with the guy and then she decided to call 911 and had the fire dept and paramedics there. A few minutes later she's in a neck collar going into the ambulance. I wonder how much she snaked out of ICBC for that....

Like MarkyMark I would love to see severe rate hikes for repeated shitty drivers or at least a cap on how much money can be given to fix a car that's over a certain value that was at fault. I'd also like to see heftier fines for people using cellphones. If they're going to use them at least have the brains to put it on speaker phone on your lap. If it's against your ear you deserve whatever fine you get.

There's no easy fix and no matter what happens there will be some people who will be mad.

As an older driver with no ticket or claims history, I am super jealous of what my friends in Alberta pay for insurance... I could insure all 3 of my cars year-round in Alberta for the price of what I'm paying for just 1 car here.

I also don't understand why we don't adopt the USA style system where the PERSON is insured instead of the stupid car... so you can have one policy and it's valid no matter which car you get into and drive it instead of having to pay insurance on multiple vehicles at once... I can't drive more than 1 car at a time, it's asinine to do it the way we do here. The entire USA operates in this manner.

I would like to see the provincial government bail out ICBC, and introduce the option to have another insurance company in the province. As well as stop taking money out of ICBC to balance the provincial budget.

I feel like ICBC as the only auto insurer in the province is anti-competitive. But privatization of insurance might lead to denial of legitimate injury claims. I think a reasonable solution would be to have both to see which one is better.

I'd also like to see insuring of the person rather than the car. Too many private companies that either surcharge out the ass or flat out refuse to insure RHD cars, even if your record is completely clean.

However, that does leave yearly plate tags up in the air and would require a provincial body to regulate that, no?

From what they were talking about on CKNW the other day I honestly don't have a problem with having a photo radar camera set up at intersections with a sign stating it's there and if you're doing over X speed you will be ticketed. I think the example they used the other day was if you're doing 70k through an intersection with a posted sign saying it's there giving you warning and you chose to ignore it then you'll most likley be getting a ticket...I'm totally fine with that. Cash grab or not it seems pretty basic to me. Driving is a privilege and if people cant follow the most basic rule of don't speed then they've nobody to blame but themselves. I'm no angel and of course I'll speed at times but I do it at the risk of knowing the possible outcomes.

I wouldn't mind if they raised the speed limit so I wouldn't get a ticket.

But seriously, I feel like a safe speed varies on the conditions of the road. Traffic, weather, pedestrians, road layout, and terrain.

All 5,200 employees get 4 months? This public information? Or only those on the board?

My adjuster friend sure doesn't get 4 months of vacay after being there for 3 years, who should he talk to regarding increasing vacation time?

Because with all those warnings it's more for road safety, meaning eventually most people will drive slower in those places = fewer tickets = less revenue.

It's obvious the photo radar idea is to generate more revenue, not save lives.

3 years or 40, who the fuck deserves 1/3 of the year off on Vacation lol

Is this actually true for some icbc employees or is it an exaggeration?

Insurance is a fickle business. Simply comparing pricing without analyzing the terms of the insurance means nothing. For exampe, most all private policies in Alberta do not offer windshield replacements (many windshields are in the thousands now), some have at-fault health maximums (you crash, break your hip, you better hope you are out of the hospital before you blow through your $250k insurance) whereas ICBC's third party underwritten policy is one of the best in the market - at a price, of course.

Private insurance can and will use varying details to estimate pricing of your policy, such as: age, sex, marital status, children, where you live, where you work, what kind of vehicle you drive, how many vehicles you own, and other varying factors to minimize their risks. So you are asking for private discrimination under the guise that you think you may be saving a few dollars, but in comparison of policy to policy, it has been proven that similar insurance rates in Ontario (the largest province with private insurance, so you would think the cheapest rates) would cost the average male an additional $50k in their lifetime.

ICBC isn't managed properly from the top and dipping into the cookie jar has raised some eyebrows, but their policies and coverages are great, all things considered.

Glass door says 4 weeks to start and 1 bonus week after 8 years.

Your friend should've been a teacher... 2 months in the summer, 3 weeks for winter and spring breaks, all the stats and pro D days... adds up close to 4 months...

no private insurance plz. no matter how much i hate icbc, having lived under private insurance in the east, ill still take lesser evil of the 2.

private insurance is not as golden as it seems, with all the US ads. we dont have so much competition and therefore will get it up the A**

maybe icbc should be taking profits from optional insurance and payup for its non $ making unit, hike luxury cars, old people 80+(or test them often plz). have international dl holder pay more.
and Audit ICBC thoroughly and implement corrections.

*also . turned down a job at icbc, as pay wasn't that great (-20% lower). prvt firms pay more (so not everybody at icbc is making millions as people here think)
