Anyone get theirs done? it's quite interesting.. i haven't done mine yet however my dad and a bunch of his friends have done it and one of them actually found a cousin they had no idea they had living in Richmond tracing those routes all through europe etc.
My grandparents on my fathers side both came to Canada from Finland in the 50's and as far as they knew the family tree basically stayed within Finland/Scandinavia for as long as they knew.. and it worked out to be true as my dad was actually 99.3% Finnish Ancestry lol.. fairly amazing considering the groups of ancestry they track within that area..
Before you do it you should find out which groups are actually noted in the descriptions because smaller regions are grouped into 'larger' geographical areas in some cases. With 23andme their research base has the most cases from Europe and Asia, so if you fall into one of those categories your results are likely a little more accurate than other areas.
For anyone that does 23andme or ancestry there is also a site, https://promethease.com/ which you can release your results to and they will spit back a massive packages of pages regarding your health and geneology for only $15 or somthing extra. It's a little harder to read than the 23andme health report but worth it for the extra $15

You really want someone to have your DNA? Who knows what they will do with it.
While it’s obviously easy to track down who sent in what sample, you don’t really have to give that much info, and by the looks of it you could provide fake information and get results. You have to send it quite a big vile full of spit so it’s not like you could just steal someone’s DNA and send it in from a cup etc.
These are the groups you could be narrowed down to with 23andme:
There is one more category which is “broadly oceanic” and that would obviously be a huge disappointment to me narrowed down to that lol
Edit* so yea by the looks of it Europe is far more narrowed down than most of the Asian countries

I would assume the regional accuracy would increase as more people from those areas contributed?
I received an Ancestry kit for Christmas, which I intend for my son to use as we don't really know much about his mother's side of the family. My side of the family has had generations of family historians tracing our routes back centuries so it would also be interesting if any of that can be verified further.
It also doesn't help that 85% of Chinese people have the same 100 surnames. Plus I doubt record keeping was very stringent i pre-20th Century China as well. Ah, well chalk another item up for "Things White People Like" - Ancestry Testing

if you are Asian, don't bother with ancestry. I got mine done and it was literally 'asia east, and Asia south' ... like c'mon, that's the best you can do?
if you are white though, they have a much better breakdown.

i think it's because its 23andme type services are catered towards western/european clients. yeah, the results kinda sucked for asian people, although it did tell someone in our family has a higher rate of early onset dementia possibility

This.
I was told Ancestry.com is a DNA data collection scheme run by a Mormon group. I’ve never been bothered to look into it too much but the thought of signing off on someone potentially owning this info and doing whatever they want with it in future was enough for me to lose interest.
