| Province to upgrade red light cameras to catch speeders

The provincial government is planning to tweak existing red light cameras to target and ticket speeders.
It says in the coming months, it will decide where these upgrades will happen.
The province says the new technology will identify and ticket “the fastest vehicles,” adding signs will warn approaching drivers about the upgraded cameras. However, the province has not given a speed threshold that would trigger the system.
It is distancing these upgrades from the previous photo radar program.
“This approach is more transparent than the provincial photo radar program that ended in 2001,” reads a news release. “It used unmarked vans in random locations, issued tickets at low speeding thresholds and tied up police resources with two officers staffing each van.”
“This is about slowing down the fastest drivers at intersections where we know that speed is a factor in causing accidents, so everyone on these busy corridors will be safer,” says Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth in the written release.
“There is very little public sympathy for those who flout the law and speed excessively through known, high-crash intersections. The signs will be there to warn you. If you ignore them and put others in danger, you will be ticketed.”

WTF? Who drives 30 over the limit? Isn't that impound speed?
I'd like to know the ticketing threshold though.

They try real hard to avoid saying "photo radar is back" but photo radar is back, this time in red light cameras. They say it's to target the fastest speeders but I wonder what the trigger speed will be.

Great, now you get people randomly jamming on their brakes coming up to fast-flow intersections and all the chaos that results from unexpected braking... anyone who has spent time driving in England will have experienced this bullshit

If they ARE NOT assholes, which we know THEY ARE, they would set the trigger speed to be 20 over the limit.. But I want to say it's going to be 5-10 over the limit.. That's what cops usually shrug at when they're at speed traps.

I highly doubt it will be 5-10km over, the backlash when every single person gets a ticket will be enough to kick their ass out next election when the Liberals say they'll take it away. I think 20km over should be good enough.

The rest still speed. I decided to stick to the right lane and do exactly the speed limit on HWY 1 a while ago, any cars passing me would be speeding, 100% of people passed me. The posted limit has no real meaning, it's treated as a suggestion by most nowadays.

I'd like to know the ticketing threshold though. | It's pretty easy to go over 80km/h. My buddy just bought a new BMW 440i and it doesn't take much to get up to 100km/h. Once we got up to 100km/h it didn't feel that fast.
Based on all the luxury cars in the city, going 80km/h doesn't seem that unreasonable, especially on Marine drive

Is there an intersection on that stretch of road? I can't remember if there is. I assume you're talking about the Boundary road area.
But I feel like that area should definitely be more than a 50 speed limit.

According to ICBC's website
Speed monitoring by the existing ISCs at 140 B.C. locations shows that between 2012 and 2016, 17% of vehicles annually travelling through the intersections were speeding, with 0.2% entering the intersections at 30 km/h or more over the limit.

My car feels much faster than my Jeep does (at the same speed) but the Jeep weighs over 1.5x as much and can't stop as quickly.

I don't agree with all the speed limits in certain areas but I still follow them going at most 5-10 over so long as I'm going with the flow of traffic. Getting a ticket just isn't worth it to me.
I've a question for everyone here - When you cross the border how closely do you follow the posted limit? If you openly admit to speeding 20-30km/h locally would you do the same there or would you obey the limit and take away the chance of getting pulled over?

Personally, when i'm in the states, I follow the posted speed limit exactly. I might go 5 miles over, but that's about it.
I drive more aggressively locally than I do when i'm in the states. I think it has to do with familiarity. When i'm in the states, I get locals who zip pass me like i;m not even moving. So I think it has to do with how familiar you are with the area.

I'm saying that in the newer luxury cars that have good suspension and are put together well, when you're going fast, it feels like you're in total control of the vehicle.
ie. going 120km/h in a Audi RS5 versus going 150km/h in a honda accord will feel totally different. In my experience, in the RS5 it feels totally comfortable. In my honda accord it feels safe because I can manage that speed, but I can notice a huge difference.

Near the boarder on the American side, it's known that the police target Canadian cars. Knowing that, I stick to the speed limit, even though Americans zip by me, or on a single lane road, are stuck behind me. The penalty is stiffer as well, so it's not worth this risk.
Here, I was driving around today, and it seems like the average is 70 km/h, on city streets. Even the police go 70 from what I've noticed. I know an officer that has pulled over people going 20 above and have given warnings. That said, on residential streets I go like 40, there's many more blind spots, and pedestrians. In the heart of downtown the average speed is 40 as well, because of pedestrians.

I guess you could alter it a bit and apply it here how I've heard people complain that cops are always out to get them because they've nice cars and they're a target for it.
