It's an investment vehicle. Sometimes funds have partial ownership, sometimes they have 100% ownership. This is completely normal. In this case, the pension fund probably made nice with this turn-around story. Canadian pension funds like Ontario Teachers are some of the world best managed funds. They are run incredibly well.

The OTPP had majority ownership of the Leafs during for the era between the 2 lock outs. Slow to adjust to the cap and refusing to rebuild, their main goal seemed to be getting the team into the playoffs, rather than winning a cup. They failed, yet still made a lot of money through ticket sales, tv deals, and merchandise. Wasn't as bad as the Ballard years but they squeezed every dollar out of the franchise they could.

Kinda surprising in this day and age when many other big brick and mortars chains are going out of business.

Better investment opportunities outside of Canada

While my countrymen are supposedly buying and developing property in Vancouver, our government is doing the same in China.

Even the Keystone pipeline is backed by pensions. When shit hits the fan, oil spill, bankruptcy, false flag terrorism, ect... they'll say sorry no pension for you, but you can stay and eat at our sub-par food feeding factories to stay alive.

Members average what 30-40 years of age? Another 30-40 years left... why on earth would anyone keep working to pay for shelter when life is so short. Its best to live in a van and expand ones horizons.

From the OTPP's pov, why would they care about the team winning the Cup? They are in it for the revenue, not for prestige or to make hockey history.

I guess financially it makes a lot of sense
I just assumed entities like these would be more inclined to support local efforts (ie. police department buy fleets of domestic vehicles vs hyundais)

its pretty wild the things that pension funds are invested in.

for example, the BC public workers pension fund is invested in the same company they are trying to prevent developing in BC. 2 of them actually, 1 successfully
