just got this little guy a day ago... a mere 8 weeks but full of energy for a little puppy.

we have a good sized house...the 1st floor is all laminate/tile but best way to potty train the little one?

so far, i've gotten a cozy dog bed...that he's peed in..

a 'pee mat' that resembles artificial grass.. he likes it but hasn't peed on it yet...

i guess i'll have to get some sort of large cage and/or fence him into a specific area for now. AND... is pet insurance worth it????

Get him outside every time he wakes up and every 30 minutes after that. If he's sniffing anywhere he probably has to go as well.

I've had my new guy a week and a half and he's about 90% potty trained now, it's helped that my wife was working evening last week so she was home during the day.

CONGRATS, there are few bigger joys in life than having a dog as companion.

Vet would say not to bring him outside until he gets all his shots to not get sickness from dogs that don't have updated shots. Ask your vet. If you keep him indoor, bring dogs that have updated shots to him so he can socialize. First few weeks are critical.

For house training, it works best if the whole family is patient. Small dogs, especially puppies have small bladder. They will want to pee like 15-30 minutes after drinking. I would spot mine drinking then go do an intensive play session and literally put him on the pee mat after. If he doesn't pee on the mat, it's fine, just clean up (use the odor removal spray) and ignore him. If he does, shower a tons of praise upon him when he goes. Do the same thing if he goes outside the house too. He'll make the connection: pee on mat = affection from the humans.

I wouldn't confine him against his will. Treat the cage as a safe sanctuary that he can go in and relax. Put old piece of clothing inside, they like that.

First few months will be a bit frustrating but most dogs is fully housetrained and can heed basic commands in 3-4 months.

pee mat that looks like grass?.....Just buy the reg white mat ones posted above and drop it where he goes if its mistakenly somewhere he shouldn't and pack him on it.


Saw a guy have the strangest Husky puppy that would always go underneath the dining table and he had a whole shit load of mats under it just to help...would crap in weird area's like closets...tons of patients needed....some "lazy" owners even send their puppy to doggy school for a month or so just so it can be bathroom trained.

We're in a condo but we try to take out our little guy every few hours and he's pretty much completely potty trained now.

We have one of these plastic floor protectors on our hardwood floor and we lay a disposable pee mat on top, so if he ever really does need to go when we're not around then he has a safe zone to go.

Like quasi said, the key to house training your pup is to make sure he associates peeing with the outdoors. The only way to really reinforce that is to take him out as much as possible so he'll eventually clue in that going out means it's ok to pee. You kind of lucked out because you got him right at the start of summer, so going out will be relatively easy. It sucks ass to have to potty train your dog in the fall/winter when it's raining every day

That's one of the best feelings as a dog owner. They're always so excited to see us whenever we come home, regardless of whether we've been gone for 5 days or 5 minutes :lol
