esports stadium being built in Richmond

https://www.richmond-news.com/news/c...ond-1.23387110

Quote:
Richmond is expected to be home to Canada’s first-ever eSports stadium, with an opening date scheduled for 2019.

Myesports Ventures Ltd. announced today that the arena, named The Gaming Stadium, will be a custom-built, community-driven location that is open for players for all ages and skill levels.

“We are focused on a more than top-level players or hosting major events…we are going to be the Little League, Junior League and Major League home of all things eSports in Vancouver,” said COO Matthew Low in a press release.

The location of the stadium is set to be in the parking lot space between Lipont Place and the Tim Hortons on No. 3 Road.

The Gaming Stadium will feature a large stage with seating for up to 250 spectators, a gaming area with more than 40 computer set-ups, a leisure area, a full broadcast facility and food and beverage offerings.

eSports are a form of professional video-game competition and are often performed with multiplayers in real-time.

Vancouver’s Rogers Arena will be hosting the International Dota 2, a fantasy online video game, Championships in late August, with a prize pool of $27 million.

“Pending on the permit process, we are hoping for constructions to start late this fall and for an opening date in the spring of 2019,” Spiro Khouri, press contact, told the Richmond News.

Sounds pretty awesome.

40 computer set-ups

that's a small amount of computers with games like fortnite & pubg taking 100 players in...the more the merrier for bigger cash events with teams making it worth flying in Vancouver for to play...

40 computers is such a small amount for massive player games but dota 2 and cs go...it'll be okay.

They have a couple of kids from UBC and SFU in their "advisory team" and a venue that can only hold 250 people. It's likely more for grassroots events.

I think it was a world finals for LOL. Dota2 has their finals here as well.

The size of this suggests that it's meant to be a venue for a weekly league. like LCS (LA), or LCK (S. Korea). Both leagues have studios of similar size.

I disagree. It’s a competition between people that involves a huge amount of time, dedication, passion and skill to become good enough to be a professional.

But it’s definitely the least sport of the sports lol

That does not make it a sport. Not even close. Chess also takes a huge amount of time, dedication, passion and skill to become good enough to be a professional.. would you call it a sport?

If you aren’t doing something physically active you aren’t playing a sport IMO.

But it is physically active! Think about how fast your fingers have to move on the keyboards! Have you seen those SC2 players man the way how mirco manage their units is insane. I am surprise their fingers haven't fallen off yet.

Meh. Absolutely not worth getting bent out of shape over dude. I grew up in a time where my highschool (known for 50+ years of being the provincial leader in football) sold all of its football gear to buy more ping pong tables, no joke. We had former bc lions staff as P.E teachers. What a fucking waste

seriously, wth really cares about a 'stadium' for 250 spectators. That's like a big house in farmland south of Steveston, Richmond.

I remember a couple years ago Elements Casino opening an E-Sports Lounge. No idea if it's still there, haven't been back since they got rid of the poker room.
