B.C. man faces deportation for membership in hate groups in England in 1990s
Friends rally to support Nick Cooper who is now a vocal advocate for diversity and inclusion
Spoiler!
Quote:
Eighteen years ago, Nick Cooper had a maternity ward conversion from hatemonger to lover of inclusivity.
Once member of racist extremist groups in London, England, Cooper is now part of a group called Life After Hate, he’s involved with Cycling4Diversity, and more locally, a Facebook group called Inclusion Chilliwack.
And earlier this month a Tweet of Cooper’s went viral around the world after he painted over a swastika adorned with racist language under a bridge at Eagle Landing. That Tweet received more than 350,000 likes in just four days.
But despite what seems like almost two decades of penance for mistakes he made in the 1990s, those choices are coming back to haunt him in the form of a possible deportation via the Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship.
His friends are rallying around him hoping he is judged on the man he is today rather than who he used to be.
“After hearing Nick’s story and knowing him personally for the past year, I would be incredibly saddened to see Nick deported,” said friend Stacey Wakelin. “What inspires me most about Nick is his capacity to remain true to his mission in life – to share kindness and to drown out hate. The mistakes made while he was young are being used to make this country a better place.”
On Monday, Cycling4Diversity executive director Anne-Marie Sjoden started a “Keep Nick Cooper in Canada” petition via Change.org with a goal of reaching 500 signatures. By Wednesday at noon it had 300.
“According to friends, his immigration issues stem from some choices he made back in the early 1990s, when he was involved with a hate group that had ties to planned terror plots,” the petition reads. “Nick Cooper has been trying to make a better life for himself and his family. He has been doing public speaking on his past life and how he regrets his life as a member of a Hate group.”
Cooper’s change of heart came when his wife was in labour in 2000 in England. As a racist at the time, he didn’t want any non-white hospital staff helping them.
But there was trouble with the birth and his wife had to go for an emergency C-section. That’s when the lives of his wife and daughter were saved by a doctor of Indian descent and an Afro-Caribbean nurse.
He apologized to the nurse who he had been very rude to, and she brought him a cup of tea.
“That little bit of compassion that she showed me when I least deserved it, it just changed my entire life,” Cooper said.
“Now I’m trying me best to bring light out of darkness. Because that was a very dark time in my life. My message is, don’t do that because it it’s wrong. Everyone deserves to live a life in safety.”
His immigration status now in question thanks to mistakes me made in the 1990s, Cooper and his friends just hope Canada will let him stay.
“Nick uses his story to educate our youth and illustrate the destructive impact hate or discrimination has on society,” Wakelin said. “I do not believe that the mistakes Nick made as an angry 20-year-old man, warrant his deportation today.”
“He has more than earned it and wants to make it right,” Cycling4Diversity founder Ken Herar said on Facebook. “Second chances are important in life.”
The article doesn't provide a lot of detail. I would like to know more about how he got on the Ministry of Immigration's radar. What is his actual status in Canada? Which hate group was he a part of, what sort of things did they get up to, and what was his role? Why was he able to slip through, or allowed in, despite his past when he initially came to Canada? And so on.
I really like redemption stories so this is sad if true. He seems to have demonstrated a positive change in his life and the lives of others. If Trudeau can allow former ISIS fighters back into Canada and attempt to reintegrate them, I don't see why this man can't stay.
Harper put in to law that anyone that got Canadian citizenship through naturalization may lose it if found to have had a criminal conviction before acquiring Canadian citizenship.
UK puts alot of stuff that would fly here as terror organizations.

How so? He resides in Chilliwack. The article, with its lack of detail, describes that he is being under threat of deportation for once being a member of a racist extremist group, which implies that the Canadian government doesn't believe he has been rehabilitated and still views him as a racist extremist, rather than someone who committed immigration fraud. That may not be the case, but I didn't write the article.
I admit the title is a bit of clickbait, but it was an attempt to show, especially in light of recent threads/posts of racism, that not everyone in the FV is a bigot.
I can't speak for everyone, but I came in fully expecting a racist rant video... but it's clear after reading the article he's anything but a racist. The title goes against what you're trying to show, just my opinion.
so the uk goverment was cracking down on terrorist groups beating up on immigrants with this guy in the nazi group,he decides to run and hide into Canada after they were taking action on all his buddies?.
Hopefully the England government deports him,no different than Nazi's fleeing Germany in my eyes in all fairness.
teaches him to spread hate and run with his tail between his legs, just like them all.

Could you source the information showing his participation in this group, that it is indeed an actual Nazi group (in the age of overuse, and often times incorrect use of such a label, I have to ask), or that he decided to flee to escape justice?
For all we, or at least I know, he had a change of heart during the risky birth of his daughter, turned on this group, and fled to Canada for fear of reprisal for his apostasy. Why would these various social justice groups go to bat for him if he escaped justice for attacking immigrants?

Correct, however only applies if the person holds a dual citizenship.
Omar Khadr was a born Canadian citizen, you can't take that away from him and make him stateless. As bad as the things that he did were.
What sucks in 2018 is journalism ... W5 motherfuckers: Who, what, when, where, why (and how). Presenting more than one side of a story. Attempting to contact all parties involved.
What changed since his arrival? How did he end up on the Ministry's radar? Why are they looking to deport him now? Why didn't they attempt to contact the Ministry for a comment?

Groups like those make mistakes all the time, do you really expect them to have detailed knowledge of the actions of a group 20 years ago halfway around the world?

I don't know how these kinds of things work, but my guess would be the UK government put him on their radar because they want him back over there for whatever reason.

Journalism in 2018:
1.) 35 word subjective article that spans two small paragraphs
2.) Nine embedded tweets / FB posts from random housewives and Arts bros
3.) Take lunch break
As for this, I remember hearing about it a few weeks ago. I'm guessing he isn't free and clear with the law there. Anything outstanding against him needs to go through due process.

Kinda like that Swedish student who protested on a plane to prevent the deportation of a Afghan asylum seeker, while essentially calling Afghanistan a shithole country to make her point. She was quickly dubbed a hero before it was revealed he was being deported because he had committed an assault in Sweden. oy vey
IIRC, a 90-year old former Nazi Concentration Camp guard was just deported from the US to Germany. He was Polish but held no other citizenship but US.
Doesn't matter if the guy was a saint in the interim, if you do the crime you do the time.
the worst example is the guy in liberia, general butt naked. he killed and cannibalized thousands of people, and now he claims he's all christian and a changed man. that guy needs to be held accountable.
