Working from home, quarantine, & social distancing discussion thread

Wanted to start a thread to share and discuss how everybody is handling working from home, self-quarantine, or social distancing. Share tips and tricks, etc.
It's only been 3 days but has felt like a week. The team seems to be keeping in touch and social with zoom meetings.
We're intentionally meeting up before huddle just to chat, or setting up a public room during lunch to socialize.
I've cleared out my man cave to make space for a yoga mat and a few weights to do bodyweight and light dumbbell exercises in lieu of the gym.
How else is everyone else adjusting?
Also, I've seen a bunch of breweries and liquor stores in Vancouver offer delivery, but does anybody know of places that service Richmond?

too many distractions...but i've re-subbed to WoW for lunch hour excursions.
I dont' bother hooking up the corporate laptop since all our technologies are cloud based.

I also recently started playing WoW classic so that’s a good time burner lol..
Fyi..better hope your TV/internet services are up and working because there may be a time shortly where there will be no installations or repairs.

I've been working from home since Tuesday. Nothing new to me, as I've worked from home every now and then in the past. I can do all of my job functions at home, the only thing that's a bit more difficult is keeping track of what my subordinate team members are up to, if they need help etc. Before I could just float by casually to get an update, now it's a formal phone/skype call.
I kept my son home from daycare today, which has added an extra challenge trying to keep a 3 year old occupied. I know once he gets tired of watching paw patrol he's going to start getting antsy and productivity is going to decline. But I make up for it by having another work session in the evening.

my left arm is sore and i'm low on jergens.
Jokes aside, I am tempted to buy another computer monitor to make working at home easier. It's hard to read spreadsheets on my 13" laptop all day.

Both my wife and I are working from home. We've both been told to stay home indefinitely.
We have two kids under the age of 5 whom we've pulled from daycare. The nice thing about having two kids is that they can play with each other for short periods of time.
My neighbours don't seem to be taking it seriously though. They're over at each other's houses and some are still working on sites, etc. I guess the only way you take it seriously is if you get sick. My relatives are on the front lines so I'm getting information about what's really happening that hasn't been reported.

^Yeah I agree, I couldn't be productive just using my work laptop screen.
I have its docking station hooked up to the secondary inputs on my home PC's monitors.

Day 4 for me, I always had the ability to work from home but I feel I get more done in the office. I find it hard to stay focused at home although I'm getting through it. The biggest annoyance is my son will play games talking to his friends and he's so fucking loud, a few times a day I have to threaten to turn it off.
I have been going outside in the backyard with the dogs a few times a day tossing the ball around so that I'm enjoying. I'm going to make an effort to get outside and throw the football around with my son, I think he's going stir crazy.

Working from home as of Tuesday. Day 3... tired of sitting at my kitchen table. Wish I had a home office, but my wife and I live in a 1 bed condo.
Our work has closed the office for the rest of the month. There will be a reassessment later next week.
Going for lunchtime walks helps, especially when it is sunny. Wife is a nurse, so at least it is quiet during the day!

Try to stay slightly active, do some squats, push ups and jumping jacks, just get the blood flowing. It worth setting 2-5mins aside every 3-4 hours just for a quick activity.
I've been riding my motorcycle everyday, for an hour or two looking for new backroads.. Therapy at its finest..
I'm on Team A this week at work so i'm in the office, but I typically just work till 12 and go for a ride. Next week I'll be fully WFH for the week, but this also give me time to keep up with my hobbies..

Adjustments I've made to cope with WFH in the long haul:
Used to standing desk at work, helps with getting too stiff/tight on my hips and back.

Cleared out man cave and set up a yoga/fitness room with a kettlebell and a few dumbbells:

Been WFH for the past 2 weeks, but now that the kid is out of school, my focus and productivity has definitely gone down the drain. Been exercising in my backyard and will probably start doing early morning jogs. Tried afternoon jogs, but there are lots of people around as everyone is trying to do the same.

Always had the ability to work from home but still in the office. My work has been classified as essential services and while 50% of our office is working from home the other's are in. If I worked from home right now I would get zero things done, wife is still on mat leave and we got a 10 month and a 5 year old at home. There actually isn't that many bodies in the office at any given time right now and there have been a ton of measures put into place to ensure it's as clean and safe as possible. I''ll probably start doing like a half and half but there's also a very real chance I'll have to be deployed to the Vancouver Emergency Operations Centre anyway.
I know a guy, his wife wasn't tested but has a fever, flu like symptoms, went home sick last Thursday. He had a fever Monday, goes home for lunch and comes back feeling ok, he got a tooth capped Wednesday. She called 811 and they said she likely has Covid19 and to self quarantine. They still share the same bed, even the same damn toothbrush. He is still going to work. I'm yelling at him saying self quarantine means exactly that, he says he feels fine. fug
He's telling me he feels fine and it's a conspiracy and hoax. Ok Donald Trump. Ironically he is on his works safely committee. I texted his boss about him to not let him go to work. What do I do? Call the cops on him??

lol the fuck is social distancing, I'm still going into work like nothing is wrong? Work in a dealership, people are still coming in for service as normal "to beat possible closure" and "to support the dealership despite thinking about cancelling", booking appointments as if nothing is wrong, and coming for car detailing.
Fucking oilchanges and detailing can wait. Jesus Christ. And it's people that are most vulnerable to the virus that are insisting on showing up.

I've had the ability to work from home for quite a while so it's not too different, my computer at work has slightly bigger screens which is nice but not a big deal. No commute saves me about an hour a day. My family is a bit of a distraction sometimes but less so than my coworkers interruptions so I'd say I'm more productive so far.

I've heard from customers dumb enough to come into my workplace, but working from home still get dressed as if they're going to work to avoid distraction.
Might be weird to wear a suit at home, but it helps some of them out.

Definitely having a routine and making an effort to actually dress like an adult helps getting into a 'work' mindset.
It also sets good boundaries so it doesn't feel like work hours bleed into non-work hours.

My wife is working non stop with this junk, while my work is becoming non existent as the days go by. I’ll have to step up the Househusband lifestyle. This week I’ve been cooking up a storm. I had to go in to work today, so I stopped in at a metal supplier and I’m making a workout station in the garage (TRX mount and pull-up bar). Besides groceries, I should be good for months. Pretty happy we didn’t have Netflix all winter as we have some catching up to do.

Worked from home anyway, and the gym in the afternoon is dead enough that I can still go. I take hand sanitizer and clean my hands after every change in equipment. Some people wear masks to the gym, which I could never do. I thank them

I'm a homebody to the max.
If I was stuck at home, it would be great. lol.
But I am still being forced to work in the office. The IT haven't fully figured out how to set everyone up to work from home yet... Maybe next week.
Anyway, I'm trying to do my part, just from home to work to home. And one trip to the gas station and I lysol wiped the pump and PIN keypad, and my hands after.
Hoping I can work from home soon. I work at a hospital and it’s stressful as fuck.

We churned out laptops /w VPN and LCDs to desktop users. This allowed them to Remote Desktop to their office computer. So, all their files and other settings didn't change. It was important to only alter work flow, a bit. Laptop users were used to working remotely, and they just got an LCD. There's a few kinks to work out, but the problems that people experienced on the first morning were minimal.

Without urgent deadlines, I don't have the "locked in mode" to work hard when working at home. Day 4 working from home, just casually cruising along, work a bit/do some personal things a bit and repeat until end of the working day.

I’m working from home but never have before and the laptop they gave me isn’t properly set up... it’s pretty shit... and wife is also working from home, we are definitely not accustomed to spending 24/7 together and after only 4 days shits starting to go sideways being practically on top of each other in a 1 bedroom apartment.

Went to Iona beach for a ride and it was packed !!! Social distancing my ass. Kids on the beach, people just chilling out next to each other, sitting in their cars or on top of their roofs. I’m still certain nobody is taking this shit seriously.

Wife's working from home, I still have to come I to work cause my role is deemed "critical". Just a skeleton crew here only 4 people.
BUT we're all isolated in our offices, no one is allowed into our offices and contact by phone, and email only.
I kind of like it, no management on site it's quiet and peaceful.

That actually sounds amazing. Would much rather work in isolation in the office than at home.
But yes, those of us who can operate fully from home and still have a full paying job are very lucky and I am grateful.

The last place I worked at, we just had to install this app on our own personal PC at home and then we could work remotely and connect to the work server.
I think my currently place is expecting those that work at home to literally take our entire workstation home. Not sure if that's the most efficient way or why one method is done over another. I'm not an IT expert though.

Invest in noise-cancelling headphones.
If you are at home with partner, set boundaries on your time. Like, "I'm working 9-12pm, lunch around 12", and you respect each others space during that time.

its more of a security concern than anything using your own pc at home.
In my eyes as an IT consultant, your PC can be filed with malware and can compromise the network.

My job is typically sit down and do work for 10 hours. I try to have a balance of going to the gym and seeing friends. Seeing that I'm am inherently extroverted, I draw my energy from interacting with people.
Typically when I'm stuck at home, like this, I'll either just smoke a lot of weed or get really drunk LOL

JUST be thankful you have a job. I'm mofo jobless. EI won't kick in cause I'm in sales...and doesn't just terminate until pay / package ends. 500,000 people (real #s) applying for EI on the phone / servers shutting things down.
I've been working from home for 10 yrs, but those who are married... who are now "stuck" together... there are no spaces between two people.
It's will test marriages for sure. Those who are well seasoned / married for a while are doing fine, but those who are newly weds, young kids... realizing they are going to be lock down, standing in line for groceries, can't order take out everyday, 1 loses a job etc.....
The cabin fever is real man; you don't have "friends" to talk to. "Oh, Charmaine and i are going to go for a drink", or "i'm going to watch the game with the boys"... those days are over. Everyone's dirty little secret / ticks / little things you have been putting offt come out after 2 weeks of face to face with each other, and once lock down is near (it's a matter of time), in 3 week's time.... dooms days. (Can you imagine... Canada somehow is able to say in the press in 2 weeks: JT "hi everyone, because we are so obedient and social distanced ourselves... our country is now perfectly OK.." Good luck with that.)
There's only so much sex you can have, so much netflix... the "boredom" kicks in because there's NOTHING indoor to do. People can't go read a book or learn a new hobby (cook / bake) because "ugh... it takes so long" .... A few of my buddies are already stressed out what to do. He still thinks he can go jump in his Porsche and "pretend to get groceries" at squamish / whistler...
Next week will be raining... no more going to seawall for a walk...or going outside...

I'm an introvert, so I imagine the discomfort you get from isolating is similar to the discomfort I got from anytime I've been forced to do extroverty stuff. On the one hand I sympathize, on the other the introverts have been made uncomfortable by the extroverts their entire lives so the extroverts can be the ones to deal with it for once :lol

Because I can't relate, I find it quite interesting to read different perspectives to hear how others are feeling.
As I mentioned earlier, I'm a homebody to the extreme.
And I literally been just going to work and back home all week. Honestly, no difference from my regular routine. It's only the weekends where my wife wants to go out, we can't anymore. (Win for me, lol)
Last weekend, I just sat on my computer for 16 hrs because I'm self isolating now. Depending if there's events on the weekend, I may shorten my computer usage, or not have a chance to use it for the day. But otherwise, it's not uncommon for me to average about 10-12 hours a day. Cause I also use the computer for work, so that's an easy 8+ hrs there. It's weird though, my eyes don't get strained, my body doesn't ache, I don't have carpel tunnel symptoms or anything. I don't get drained from the computer, I get entertained and energized. This has been my lifestyle for like 2/3 of my life.
Lots of YouTube, google and researching trivial things all day, RevScene, fb, COVID-19 news, lots of web whatsapping (I can chat for hours to like 20 different people throughout the entire day), I recently got really addicted to foosball so I've been drawing up designs so I can build my own table (cause I can't afford to buy a good one).
I still have a big backlog of games on steam that I haven't had time to play, movies to watch, anime, tv shows, etc. A ton of videos I can edit (cause that's another hobby). These are the kind of things I CANNOT do when I go travelling, which, unpopular opinion, is why I'm actually not that into travelling and prefer "staycations".
And not to mention, if this whole VI thing wasn't going on, I would actually have a bit more passion to continue working on my car... but so much for that. I always feel there's just so much that can be done and I can never catch up...
The only "outdoor" thing that I'm missing out is playing hockey since that's been suspended now.

Seriously though, I mean I could be around her I have a home office she'd be downstairs I'd be upstairs so technically we could totally avoid each other if we wanted but you know it's like even to much chocolate gets gross after a while haha.
Agreed. We get along great cause we have our lives apart (work/friends/hobbies) and our lives together. Quarantine life upsets that balance.

Probably stating the obvious here, but if you're planning on taking some time to do projects around the house, a few thoughts:
1) make a list and get EVERYTHING (i know, projects never work out this way but if you're thorough and really think it all through, you should be able to) in one hit, that'll last you at least a few weeks. spread it out and take your time.
2) stay the hell away from home depots, Canadian tires, and big box stores. With so many now laid off and all this freed up time, these places are going to be packed.
Luckily i have a home hardware and ace builder centre near me that never has more than four or five people at any time.
3)if you're going to do this, do it now. As infection rate rises, besides being at higher risk of infection, I'd anticipate these smaller stores to be closing their doors.
Take care, and be safe.

Last night (Friday). There were lines of people at the private liquor stores getting their booze as the BC gov ones were closed early.
With the bars closed now, everyone is getting drunk at home now on a Friday night. At least I hope that reduces the amount of drinking and driving.

Drug use appeared even more casual than usual just see guys sitting on curbs sticking needles in their arms etc. Tough time for the down and out because a lot of resources will likely close if they continue the quarantine to more drastic levels

I worked from home all last week. Set up a temporary office in one of the children's bedrooms. I loved it. My job requires me to call and message people a lot, so it didn't feel too isolating. Yet. When I'm working from home I double down on my focus so I don't get sidetracked and I get more done. I did notice as the week progressed that more people started using video chat for meetings.
Walked some trails this weekend. Lots of people out. Need to do something to keep kids from going crazy. No more playgrounds.

Day whatever this is: I quit keto. No it wasn't too hard. I simply just can't find the food I need. I haven't seen eggs in like 2 weeks, most grocery stores are out of chicken and pork. Some have very little beef left. I can't even find bacon or sausages.
I figured at a time like this, even though keto reduces my appetite, I should eat rice. It's cheaper and filling LOL.

Been doing this remote / working from home for a while now so it's been pretty normal. It was a transition I knew I was going to make so I was able to really mentally prepare for it at the time and get into the groove but I find a lot of my coworkers are having a harder time transitioning since it was pretty sudden.
I made a video that just talks about my experience being a remote worker (still trying to get better at making these YouTube videos lol):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqBrfOhb81I
TLDW:
1. Find a space that you can corner off and call your "office" so you have at least some separation from home and work
2. Try your best to get an ergonomic setup if you find yourself sitting all day like I do, desk chair, mouse and keyboards.
3. Figure out a routine that works best for you and try to stick to it everyday. Do your best not to just roll out of bed and start working. I did that for a while and things just start to become a blur especially if I never leave my place. And try to take as much breaks as possible, I always finds this helps especially if I have my head down most of the day.
4. If you're working in a team over communicate via Slack, Hangouts, or whatever means of communication you use it's better to over communicate than under. We usually always have our cameras on for small meetings, I know a lot of people aren't too comfortable with this but it does really help keep things social.
5. Drink lots of water and don't forget to eat snacks and food to keep your energy levels normal. It's probably just me but I do forget to eat lunch some days lol.
Also on a side note can our building enforce social distancing in the elevators? I've been taking the stairs but might have to take the elevators soon but I haven't seen any signs or anything letting people now that it should only be 1-2 people MAX in the elevator. It's pretty shitty as 2 of our elevators are broken and there is only 1 working one :\.

pretty fking useless in times like this.
half of my order cancelled.
So apparently they go pick orders, few hours before the pick up time. You get whatever is left on the shelves when they go pick your items.
Even though I ordered a week ago, and they had new shipments of high demand items, they don't save it for orders already in their system. it's not first come first serve for online orders.
They say, I just have to shop in-store and hope that items is in stock.

tried out Superstore online pick up.
pretty fking useless in times like this.
half of my order cancelled.
So apparently they go pick orders, few hours before the pick up time. You get whatever is left on the shelves when they go pick your items.
Even though I ordered a week ago, and they had new shipments of high demand items, they don't save it for orders already in their system. it's not first come first serve for online orders.
They say, I just have to shop in-store and hope that items is in stock.
flour and baking supplies are always gone at superstore. You're right, there has to be a system in place. However, if what you ask is what you want, then people will all order online at 12:01AM and always be first in line...
it's tough times right now...

Couldn't stand another basic homecooked meal, finally gave in and ordered doordash.
I’ve been cooking every night for the family and we’ve been eating very well during the past 8 days of quarantine. Rotisserie chicken, rib eyes, chipotle chili, shepherd's pie, sockeye, smoky maple pork chops, Korean chicken thighs and the best stir fry I’ve ever made with the leftover rotisserie chicken.
Can’t help but wonder if I’ll regret indulging in all the ingredients used over the last week or so if things don’t improve soon.
My avocados should be ripe tomorrow. It’s taco night :buttrock:

I usually cook every night for my wife and her sister (our roommate) but sometimes I'll eat out after the gym just because I'm lazy.
As this has timed out, I started dieting just over a week ago, so this has actually made it so much easier. No more temptation to eat out, so I can eat as lean as I need to in order to keep calories at my goals.
I run every morning before breakfast and work out with bands on my roof in the afteroon. So far it's been decent. Won't lie, I miss lifting heavy already. I'll make do though.

Shouldn't we be eating slightly less, because of the possible scenarios. Not over indulging during this quarantine.

All the power to you lol. That sounds like way too much work grocery shopping when planning each meal.
I usually cook dinner nightly weekdays and meal prep lunch weekly, by buying a bunch of chicken thighs or steaks, combined with spinach or broccoli, and just change up the marinade.
The weekends would be when I would get some variety by eating out. But now, eating chicken thighs lunch and dinner daily got old fast.

Now that the wife's also working from home I definately need to re-think our consumption/stock levels of certain things. Like I never realised how much we took for granted free coffee at work. Normally we just need coffee on weekends, so a pound of coffee would last a month. At the rate we're going, we'll be lucky to get week out of a pound.

I work at a smaller firm and I still have to go to work everyday. The boss seems to be pretty reluctant to allow the staff to work from home. Partially cause they don't really have the infrastructure set up to easily do so for everyone. But we don't have a lot of staff in the first place, so we are all spread out in our own offices. So health wise, I feel relatively safe. I drive, so I don't have to worry about taking transit. My manager doesn't give AF though. He just took off and has been working from home for the past 2 weeks, lol.
Work is starting to slow down a lot though. A couple guys got laid off last week and several were told to use their vacation time this week, just cause there wasn't enough work to go around.
That being said, I actually started applying to places earlier this year and I finally got an offer. I will probably take it since it's a better opportunity. It's a strange time to be switching jobs now, but at the very least, it's probably best to do it now if I want to soften the blow since it's not like my current place has a lot of work going around...

Working out on the rooftop using power bands is an adjustment, but you can actually get a pretty decent workout. The weather has been great so far so I've been lucky!
If anyone wants to talk about workout out at home, whether it's with bands or anything else, head to the official workout thread 2.0! I posted some good videos there recently for people in this situation.

I think they were probably close to tanking before the sh*t hit the fan. How bad of a company are you that in 2-3 weeks of shut down, you announce you are closing for good. Their prices were twice that of Club16, they were constantly in lawsuits with Steve Nash, the person. Terrible for their staff but this is obviously a case of piss poor management.

Don't think so. I was walking to the park and around the block with my wife and no cops seem to bother us even though we saw a cop car cruise by.
Also with your example what if I was with my parent or sister going out or something since we all live at different address do we get fine? We are a family after all so what's wrong with family going out together?

Fired and laid off are used interchangeably.
If you're non union, employers have the ability to terminate you without cause at any time in most cases, unless specified in your employment contract.
Firing an employee with cause so that no severance is paid has a high legal threshold. Companies 'fire' people all of the time, but they do so without cause and pay a severance that both parties agree to. Fitness World would have likely offered severance packages to all employees who were let go as per their obligations under common law.

I used to work for Shaw Business and to my knowledge - there is no bandwith priority for business accounts over residential.
Your slowdown situation is more likely due to your router supplying bandwith equally amongst all devices. Check your router wireless settings - if you have a newer router, you may be able to prioritize the MAC addresses of you and wife's devices, or lower the priority of video streaming.

^ yep. Learned Costco can deliver food as well. I’ve had a few deliveries over the last couple days. Very interesting to have a sanitization station set up at the front door to disinfect everything from the outside world.
4 days of quarantine to go...

Went to the Still Creek Costco earlier this week and there were employees handing out disinfectant wipes upon entry into Costco.

Oh I misunderstood. I thought punk is saying he has an disinfect station at home for groceries before putting them away.
Last night I watched this demo and it’s going take hours to wipe down everything. https://youtu.be/sjDuwc9KBps
Based on how the rest of the world is operating, those of us working from home will likely be doing this for another month or two.
I've been using my dining table chair and my ass is getting sore from all the time spent on it. What's everyone doing for office chairs? Any suggestions for something that's got a good price/performance ratio? I'm not looking to spend a crazy amount of money for a Steelcase or Herman Miller chair :dead:

Seems to be really popular on redflagdeals I bought one for $179 when it was on sale but have not used it yet.
This code should give you $20 off. 93258

I think is reasonable. Typing on a mechanical keyboard can be annoying to others coz the keys are pretty loud. So people just can't stand the noise. We have it ban at work as well.
My wife's mechanical keyboard and mouse are both louder than mine.. she also has RGB enabled on both in Rainbow mode of course. I don't even have RGB and she doesn't even game Kreygasm

I'm probably gonna get that if it goes on sale. Was waiting for the Autonomous Ai to drop in price but I missed the boat on the Best Buy sale last month.

I bought it for $160 after tax when it was on sale and I also used a coupon code. They usually have a 50% off chair sale at least once a year, maybe more. When I bought it it was mid-May.
I have laminate flooring and the original rollers were loud enough to bug me, so I ended up buying these rollers (https://www.staples.ca/products/749876-en-staples-2-12-universal-hard-floor-casters-black-5pack) which were definitely worth the extra investment. The chair is pretty much silent now when I roll.
There is also the hack/mod (https://imgur.com/a/XwE7F) where you mod the head rest to make it more comfortable if you have a longer torso since the stock height could be pressing into your upper back.

My friends are firing up Left 4 Dead 2. We haven't played in almost 10 years. We were mowing down hordes at the highest difficulty. Now, we can barely manage normal difficulty. haha.

Nothing too crazy.. Gloves on. Lysol wipe down all shipping boxes outside then Lysol wipe all contents of said box inside while unpacking.
Recycle/throw away cleaning and shipping materials as the contents dry. Wash hands for 20 seconds. Put everything away after the packaging is dry and then I’m done.

Anyone know a good place to run in Burnaby that isn't on cement? A real track and field for example?

The only ones that I know of that aren't cement are the ones at Confederation Park or at Burnaby Central.

Haha Letterkenny was probably a primary reason I signed up for this. Started watching on a flight (remember those?) and got hooked.

SFU has a track if it isn't too far. It'd be nice for a drive with low gas prices?

They're not dirt tracks. Come to think of it, most soccer fields in my area would be good for running

For those with children, this has kept us quite busy today. If you type an animals name into Google (on an iPhone or android) and then press ‘View in 3D’. It brings up your camera and then 30 seconds later you have a tiger in your house! You can take a photo of the kids with them and they can walk around it. You can also find a:

Duck
Emperor penguin
Wolf
Angler fish
Goat
