This is a VERY common occurrence when people start working out, they feel better, and lose clothing sizes but their weight stays the same. I see this all the time at my work especially because we incorporate so much strength work into the programming. It means you're on the right track! Right now you're gaining muscle which is heavy and counter balancing the loss in fat. KEEP GOING! The newby gains in muscle will platea soon and that extra muscle will help the fat loss (especially if you're feeding it correctly). Celebrate the wins of your clothes fitting better and "day to day tasks aren't hard anymore", thats real shit, not what a scale says.
Well done man,
Rich

I'm in. I have a rowing machine. it has video monitors, it has speakers, and I wear a heart monitor to motivate me into the action zone.(red)
p.s.- my Fitbit says I'm burning 400-500 cals per workout, and am totalling about 3500 a day. who knows how accurate that is?

You’re built like a brick shit house now!!!! How dare you be so handsome you rat bastard
i had some dental stuff going on for almost 2 weeks now so it's hard for me to eat normal food, especially anything remotely crunchy. i've been eating lots of overcooked stews, soups, and generally softer food just to be safe until my next dental appointment. as a result i've lost weight, im down to 162 as of yesterday. i think for me anything close to 155 is like about the thinnest i should be.
i know this is a pretty lame and obvious question, but how do you guys keep motivated to workout? i have a really hard time with developing habits and routines and even my stretching rehab exercises arent as regular as they should be even though i know how important they are. they only take about 15m per day when i strip it down to the basics, and maybe 30m if i go through the entire circuit of like 10-15 exercises/stretches, but i still struggle with that.

but how do you guys keep motivated to workout?
How are you not motivated to look and feel your best?
Since deciding to make the baby steps to return to society, one of those being coming back to online spaces that I used to enjoy, like WokeScene, I've:
1. Quit weed
2. Toned down my drinking big time
3. Coded non-stop with Cursor to get rich again
Now, next steps in life are to:
1. Get my cars fixed
2. Get my hernia surgery finally
3. Get back in the gym so I look fucking great this summer if I intend to visit Vancouver
Not eating like a slob, getting some new clothes, a haircut, maybe a new cologne, and socializing in new spots around town, this stuff keeps you motivated. If you just become a hermit, or you lose your social life like I did during COVID, you end up a fat, drunk slob who barely shaves and doesn't give a fuuuuuuuuuck!
90%+ of looking good and feeling good requires you to go be social. There is a reason why seniors get sick and die so fast when they stop being social. Nothing kill old people faster than isolation.

During COVID, I perfected how to make the Japanese-style fried chicken that you fry twice after a brief rest in between. I got so fucking fat because I made it like 5 nights a week and my kid LOVED it!
I had to get rid of my deep fryer, otherwise I would just eat Japanese-style fried chicken 3 meals a day. :lol :lol :lol

Shallow fry, with America test kitchen cast iron oven fried chicken. Then pic above is not my best results with the recipe, I was in a rush and some of the breading fell off. But it's a fantastic technique.

100%
I find if you spray the breaded chicken with oil before and let the breading absorb the oil, you do get a reasonable facsimile of fried chicken from the airfrier/convection oven.

So I finally got down to 175 (from 183) - took 3 months and I'm down to maybe 2 pairs of pants that fit. Good bit more muscle now though I'm having a hard time getting enough protein. I'm going to focus more on cardio in the coming months as I've shown way less progress here than I expected - the Apple Health app actually says I've made no progress even though I feel way better so something isn't adding up.
The best news is that I had set a goal that when I hit 175 that I could go see chicken lady and hit her up for a 3 piece and fries. Can't wait.

Week 1 of cutting has commenced, have been able to do the following routine the last 6 days in a row, done mid-morning fasted (just BCAA for muscle retention, creatine, and caffeine)
- 1hr low intensity steady state elliptical keeping HR between 120-130 max
- ~30 min resistance training for 1 muscle group per workout
Not cutting out carbs this time around to try to ensure energy for workouts and recovery, but moreso around carb timing. Lunch is no carb but dinner I will have a measured serving of rice if I know I have a workout the next day.
Also gonna introduce swimming to the cardio routine this time around to switch things up.

haven't changed my diet too much but since my OHS in 2020, I've not eaten red meat, processed food, and salt is not even allowed on the table. so my point being my diet is not crazy by any means.
I've been working out every other night for the last 10 weeks, recording about 43 sessions. I row then I stretch(with golf in mind).here's a normal session.

So I got a body analysis done to compare with where I started back in October 2024 going to the gym 2 times a week, sometimes 3 if it worked out. Also have been using a personal trainer for the 2 times a week.
I started early October at 185lbs and I now weigh 194lbs (I'm 6 feet tall).
I gained 6lbs of muscle mass in these ~6 months which I think is pretty good.
Body fat held steady at 14%.
Can't really complain I think that amount of muscle gain is pretty good at my age. Could do with some dietary changes/more discipline to get the body fat% down to 11 or 12 I think.

Looking at your rowing stats here, I'm not sure your pace is very high? 6km in 25 minutes seems a bit leisurely.
When I warm up on the rowing machine at my gym, I do 1km in 2 minutes of rowing... and my heart rate is way up and breathing hard.
Something is wonky with that measurement IMO as the way it reads you're not exerting enough... I think you'd want to be hitting 6km in like 17-18 minutes max?
You want to keep a 130ish heart rate up for 30 minutes minimum per session to see actual weight loss assuming nothing else in your life changes. That would be like walking on the treadmill at 3.2-3.5mph at an incline of about 7. I'm not sure about rowing.

i keep my HR at about 120, i'm not 25 years old eh. i have a bluetooth chest monitor to see it on screen and i force myself into the zone i want, "Red" is 120 plus, which is what i thought would be the number to work at. maybe i should go higher. i also think the beta blocker i take prevents me from even going too much more? i don't think i can get to 140 if i tried.
the total time is not very accurate. i fuck around a bit with my music when i start, looking for shit to play, and i also don't promptly turn it off when i'm done. the number i look at is calories burned, that's all i care about. does it matter if i burn 500 cals in 20 minutes instaed of 25 minutes?

I've been doing a speed walk type thing on the treadmill the last few years. 4.0 or 4.1 speed with an incline of 8.5 to 12.5 depending on how I'm feeling that day, minimum 30 minutes (2 miles) maximum 60 minutes (4 miles) again depending how much time I have. I don't have a heart rate monitor on but the hand grips on the treadmill, however accurate those are usually 145-155. I try and do this at least 4-5 times a week.

I didn’t mean to offend, I’m creeping into late 40’s myself.
120-130 is fat burn range and 140+ is cardio.
I wouldn’t focus on calories burned as that’s just a calculation on a machine it’s not representative of your body and 500, in my opinion, is way optimistic for 25 minutes. The treadmill at the gym will tell me I did about 400ish after 60 minutes of incline walking at 130ish bpm.
End of the day you should definitely have noticed weight loss after even 2 weeks of consistent cardio if diet was consistent.

I think not seeing much change in after doing 4x/week for 10 weeks necessitates an adjustment to your program. As someone has already mentioned I think you need to increase your intensity. Instead of a long duration "zone" style workout you could try an interval workout (:30w/:30rest x 10 for example).
Adding some resistance/weight training would be very beneficial as well.
Lift heavy, get sweaty.

For dudes who hate doing cardio in the gym, I seriously recommend buying a decent bike and doing your cardio outside now that the weather is warming up.
Usually around April I'll start taking the bike out a few times a week, usually from Brentwood to the downtown, the entire seawall through Stanley Park and back.
A few hours of riding burns quite a few calories, and it's not boring, you get the sun and views, so it doesn't feel like a workout. Even shorter rides are great for that.
It's easy on the joints too, unlike jogging.

Speaking of low impact, think I mention in the other thread but for me I basically do elliptical to try to stay between 120-130bpm but as high intensity as possible.for a certain period of time (I do 60 mins probably 4-5 days a week during my cut). I usually put on some youtube, or if during the weekend, watch F1 quali on Saturday and the race on Sunday via F1TV.
The goal is to be able to go as long as possible, and as frequently as possible but without fatiguing your muscles where you are too tired to go for too long or go on consecutive days.
As you get more fit then you can increase the intensity to maintain the 120-130bpm for the full 60 mins and burn more calories.
I've also started to incorporate swimming into my routine as well since I enjoyed doing it as a kid. So I'll do maybe 40-45 mins ellipticals, 30 mins resistance training and then 15-20 mins swimming before hitting the sauna.

No, I use it as a warm up before my lifting routine with the trainer.
I don’t think I could keep that pull rate up for 6,000m so I added 30% to it as a guesstimate. Maybe I’ll give it a try.

Lower is generally better (assuming there's no other underlying heart condition). I've got a couple athlete friends (marathoner, triathlons types) who are in the mid-high 40s - for them it's a sign of a heart that's strong enough that it doesn't have to work very hard at rest. At a minimum your resting heart rate is above average.

What's your cardio level according to the health app? If it's high then it probably matches up with your resting heart rate.
I'm the mid-high 60s resting (above average for my age) but my cardio is shit (below average @32). When I run I'm often in the 150+ bpm range (which I feel fine with) but I need to raise my cardio level so I can be more in the 130-150 bpm range.

I'm 49. In a year Apple Health I'll be border line above average for cardio - the cutoff goes from 38 to 33 at that point. I'm started running in late April and I've seen my cardio go up from 29 to 32 so I think I can be at 35-38 by end of June. My goal is to get to a 5k in 30-35m - right now I can do about 3.7k in 30 mins.

I have a feeling the weight will go up again with the weekly farmers market a few steps from my place with ca croustille and other good bakeries showing up weekly. Still have a belly but one reason I workout everyday is because food is a pleasure and i get to eat (most of the time with moderation) whatever i want to eat.

i dont usually wear my watch during workouts so i only have a few tracking of my runs, but it says heartrate 78-120bpm for a 40 minute run at 5mph on the treadmill last week.
Same with this elliptical thing yesterday. feels weird wearing a watch during the gym. Are these dumb things even accurate?
For heart rate and cardio tracking the Apple Watch is accurate enough (some say it's quite accurate) that you can get useful data from it. Cardio tracking (V02) only works on walks/runs which is a bummer - if you don't run you don't get great data but it does seems accurate. My pal runs marathons and is a 55 V02 which maps well to his runs.
Resting heart rate can be a bit spotty (like I'll get a reading 15bpm higher than the trend once in a while) but the trend is useful.
Stuff like exercise minutes or calories burned can be easily manipulated and stuff like the standing up tracker is pretty useless.

How is it possible that my fat ass have such a good resting heartrate? maybe from all the miles and miles of running i do every week on the treadmill.

My wife and I have cut out alcohol since January.
Before Christmas, I was around 172 lbs, but today, I'm hovering around 167 lbs and have been at this weight for about the past few weeks. I had been tracking calories for a while too, but as with anything, I've lost a bit of enthusiasm for it over time. One of the biggest changes has been that my pants have been fitting better.
I also trained for the Sun Run this year. Last year, with less focused training, I did it in just over an hour. This year, I ran it in 54 minutes. I'm pretty happy with the result considering that I'm now in my mid-40s.

Losing weight is super easy it just takes MONEY, dedication and/or drugs.
Money is the most important part, because all of the best foods to eat on keto to get shredded are expensive as fuck.
Can easily spend $1000+ a month just maintaining a keto diet, especially if you eat meals outside of your house.

My weight/fat gains and losses come quickly and drastically.
Not drinking sodas and alcohol makes a huge difference for me. I was in Japan for two weeks and I barely touched any alcohol because I was jetlagged and also dealing with motion sickness. Booze is the worst thing you can put in your body besides maybe hard drugs lol.. but even hard drugs probably have a less effect on cardio and weight
In the last few years I’ve gone 4-5 months, a month at a time without booze. By the end of the month I feel way more “slim” clothes fit better, belly isn’t sticking out etc.
The second I start drinking again feel bloated and gross. I can feel this even after a week to 10 days. Hitting the gym just eating normal I feel fine, weekend comes and pound back a bunch of beers etc Sunday Monday comes just feel bloated and gross and takes another 7-14 days to recover fully
Nothing like a nice 3-4 beer buzz doe
Think besides just the empty calories and carbs there’s a lot of inflammation that happens

Long time no update!
5 months in and I'm now down to 172 (from 183), I've fully lost 3 inches on my waist (my wife says I don't have a belly anymore while my kid no longer slaps my belly and goes "Daddy's big belly"). This is the thinnest I've been in about 12 years or so - my wedding suit from 11 years ago is a bit loose on me. Other than regular exercise I'm no longer actively trying to lose weight - my diet is pretty casual (though better than before - I've had only 1 Costco hot dog this year). That said, I wouldn't mind gradually getting down into the low 160s which would put me around my year 2000 weight.
I'm signing up for a personal trainer via the City of Burnaby (finally) so I get more focused strength and cardio gains. While I'm happy with my day to day functional fitness and energy I still feel below average - I want to run a 5k in 30-35m for one thing and I want some excess strength for day to day stuff.
Blood test is next and I'm hoping to see improvement in my A1C and cholesterol. Also hopping Kensington Lifelabs hottie is available for a poke.

BTW: Can anyone recommend a plant based (or a lactose free) protein powder that isn't super gritty? I switched away from Leanfit's whey based powder (the Costco one) due to the lactose but the plant based version is really gritty - it doesn't dissolve well at all. I use it in my overnight oats so blending isn't an option (but it's gritty even in smoothies). I'd also prefer something that's not flavoured.
Thanks,

I had forgotten about this thread until now.
While in Japan I had hurt my hand and the diagnosis is a torn ligament(s). My physio has told me I cannot do heavy weights. No pushing or pulling on weights as pullups are a no, and bench is a no. That pretty much eliminates most upper body routines for me.
The recovery period is 2-6 months and I am currently at something like 6 weeks. There's very minimal you can do to speed up recovery however the pain has subsided mostly as long as I don't twist my wrist. The torn ligament means some of the bones in my hand has very little positional control, at the very beginning of the injury certain movements would mean the bones in my hand to get caught and cause excruciating pain. That's mostly subsided now.
In hockey, you hear some player has a wrist injury and their off season is a write-off and they come back into camp not being able to do any training in the off-season. I just learned how debilitating it is, and a wrist/hand injury truly means you cannot do anything lest you want to risk extending the recovery period or making the injury more severe.
It also means I'm just hitting cardio now because I cannot do upper body much, and I can only do so many squats.

I was pushing the stroller up an escalator. My older one was sitting on it (37lbs). The ramp/runway to get off the escalator was abnormally short on this one, and before I could level the stroller out the front wheels got caught on the ledge. I gave it a almighty push and it tore a ligament(s).
It was all because there was just too many people and the elevator was a 20min wait, I wasn't the only one that was doing it.

Not fitness related, but health related. On Saturday, I woke up and made the conscious decision to quit nicotine with a deadline of end of August. This time around I'm not gonna do it cold turkey and instead, ween myself off by decreasing the nicotine content progressively.
For those who know vaping, I went from 20mg salt nic for the past 5 years (if not more) down to 10mg salt nic a few months ago. Now I'm switching to free base which should help the nicotine strength.
I purchased
1 flavored 30ml x 6mg/ml
1 non-flavored 30ml x 6mg/ml
2 flavored 30ml x 3mg/ml
My plan was to use 6 nic, then mix the equiv to 4.5 nic, then go down to 3 nic. They unforutnately don't make nicotine free juice anymore, so I'll have to go cold turkey following 3 nic, but it'll be much more achievable than from 20 salt nic.
However, at home, I've been hitting 3 nic and I feel ok. A bit harder to wake up in the morn.. def very groggy unlike the instant wake up I usually get.
It'll also be cool to lose some weight by September, but I think I gotta focus on this first before trying to do too much at once.

Right now, if you can get a shipping address in Pt. Roberts, it makes a lot of sense to buy military MREs off Amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F71TXRPX/
24 meals = $78
1 meal a day = 1250 calories
Stick to this diet for a few months and you are 100% guaranteed to lose weight without a doubt, and save money too! I'm going to look into how I can get these MREs into Canada without paying what Amazon.ca wants for them... $240 for 24 meals instead of $78 USD...
i seriously doubt any normal person can stick to a 1 meal a day crappy MRE for several months... that sounds horrible. 1250 calories is a crazy unsustainable calorie intake especially for men.

You will lose weight on any diet, whether keto, steak and eggs, macro controlled, vegan, or any other wild ass fad, all of these diets aim to lower your daily caloric intake and restrict the foods you can eat, which is why they all work.
The only question is how long can you stay disciplined on said diet, which for most, isn't long.
I was talking to a gym bro yesterday -- he's trying to lose weight and tells me he's taking in 200g of protein daily, I couldn't help but laugh and told him he's nuts.

To me, the key is finding foods you know you can eat consistently and enjoy. Once you've identified that food, go find a high protein recipe on YouTube for it and you'll be on your way.
I've seen high protein, low carb recipes for all sorts of things: pizza, burgers, muffins, etc. Nearly everything has a healthier version of it.
Consistency is key because the more you fluctuate, the more you delay your results. I may not be calculating and weighing everything like before, but I know I'm in a reasonable deficit.

Yes, especially if he was eating the damn "toast" or SoliderFuel bars (these are delicious), which causes constipation. He can drink the powdered Gatorade, powdered hot chocolate package or find the sloppy joe (i think this is lunch or dinner) and that should have the opposite effect - diarrhea

One change that's really paid off for me is that I started eating overnight oats for breakfast every day. I add in plant based protein powder, chia seeds (and flaxseed sometimes), and a handful of strawberries and it's so loaded in fibre, protein, iron, calcium, B12, riboflavin (and other things) that it practically guarantees I'm getting close to what I need everyday for vitamins and nutrients once my other meals get in. If I have a reasonable lunch I'm almost guaranteed to be in a deficit for the day too - it gives me a lot of flexibility on what I eat for the rest of the day.
It's not the most enjoyable meal to eat - I don't add any sugar or sweeteners - but I'm so used to it now that I eat it every morning. I don't really miss the weekend meals of bacon, sausages, fried eggs and hashbrowns anymore.
Also helps that it's made me super regular. :fuckyea:

:fuckyea:
Nice!
Mine is:
1 scoop protein powder
1 scoop oats
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tbsp zero calorie maple syrup
mix with water to a consistency I like (and accounting for melted fruit juices)
2 handfuls of frozen blueberries or strawberries
Comes in around 500 calories (all of my meals do, or less). Eat 4x per day and I'm guaranteed in a deficit as long as I do my 10k walking per day.
At some point, I'd like to try and find some canned pumpkin as it's also a good option (low cal, high on satiety scale). Should end up tasting like pumpkin pie.

I have been on a diet for more than 2 months, went from 190 to 169 pounds (weighed today) at 5 feet 6 inches tall, in my 30s. No longer have a big belly wearing loose fitting shirts compared to before, still noticeable amount of belly fat when taking off shirts. Still motivated to keep going, hopefully under 160 or even 150-155s..... Been losing 1-2 pounds per week
For me what worked and may work you guys is cutting out most of the carbs, white rice, bread etc... my wife only packs me meat and lots of veggies like carrot, cauliflower for lunch, I don't weigh everything but I do an estimate of the calories of each meal. I love ice cream, it's my guilty pleasure and I eat it almost everyday, you can eat your treats too, it's just about portion control and how much calories in and out. Dinner, some sort of protein, lots of veggies again, no white rice. If you like cheetos or any kind of chips go for it, just don't eat white rice and chips together, that was the main problem for me, just eating too much. The kicker is, I don't even feel like I'm on a diet still, and I don't feel hungry most of the time. you can still eat the food you like on a diet, it's about portion control and don't eat them all at the same time. Also try to minimize eating fatty meats like pork ribs or anything fried, you can still flavourful food using chicken breast/thighs, pork tenderloins but you have to have a good cook like my wife
And for the ice cream lovers, I used to eat lots of haagen daaz, they taste great but calorie dense, I have switched to chapman frozen yogurt, dutch chocolate/cappuccino flavour, they are literally half the calories of the haagen daaz, tastes pretty good too
I don't weight train, I walk in my basement for 30-45mins a day 3 to 5 times a week. Diet really matters a lot when you want to lose weight

Cool! Mine is:
1/2 cup oats
2 tbsp chia seeds
3/4 scoop plant based protein powder
1 cup almond milk
100g strawberries
It works out to about 410-430 calories - I switched to almond milk to shave off 70 calories and while I don't like the grittiness of plant based protein powder it is full of iron (and I'm lactose intolerant).

I hate the chalky taste of plant based protein powders unfortunately lol. I have never tasted one that has been even close to acceptable for me. My whey protein is vanilla flavoured so I use it as my "milk" and add water only so it's less calories that way. I've heard about putting in chia seeds but I'm already regular AF when it comes to BMs :lol
I should note, for those wondering, I've only been doing my daily walking and hitting the weights once a week. Bench press, squats and deadlifts all in one session. During the week I'm doing pull ups and dips in the park on my walks. That's it! Pretty low effort in the exercise department compared to what I used to do.
i signed up for semi personal training today. never done anything like this before, never even had a gym membership before. wish me luck! im notoriously bad at sticking with things and creating routines, so im hoping for the trainers to kick my butt and keep me accountable.

Awesome! I just had my first session with a trainer on Monday and it was pretty productive - it'll definitely be worth the money IMO. He's already got me thinking more clearly about my fitness goals, helped me with my technique, and exposed some gaps (I'm not balanced side to side) that he can help address. I'm hoping to use him once a week and then follow his program outside of it.

Fellas, I'm happy to report that this morning I'm already down to 156.8lbs (from my all time high of 166.0lbs). It's been about two weeks so far and I also had 1 cheat day in between!
Honestly, my energy is good and I feel SO MUCH better now that the belly fat is going away. I think I'll stay on this train for awhile longer or potentially stick to this meal plan during all weekdays moving forward. It's been enjoyable foods and I've even added some sorbet at the end of the night while still continuing to drop the fat. I can even start to add some chips (a reasonable amount) and likely continue being in a deficit. It's actually fun now thinking of the little extras I can give myself daily.
Having the cheat day will keep me sane and keep my streak going even longer I think. Keep pushing yourselves boys, you can do it!
PS: for the pumpkin pie fans, I tried out a pumpkin pie overnight oats recipe and it was pretty amazing (I'm not even a fan of pumpkin pie lol).
1 cup pumpkin puree (90 cal)
1 scoop leanfit protein powder (140 cal)
1 scoop oats (140 cal)
1 tbsp zero cal maple syrup
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp ground ginger
mix with water to whatever consistency you want
370 cal
33g protein
50g carbs
4.5g fat
11g fibre
And let me tell you, this was VERY satiating. I was almost uncomfortably full after finishing it.

personally, I love the leanfit vanilla whey. it goes very well with my oats and tastes perfectly fine that way. also, I used to mix it into a smoothie and that tasted good too. add some frozen fruits to your mix and it'll taste way better. the thought of drinking any whey protein with just water mixed in already makes me wanna puke a bit.

Not fitness related, but health related. On Saturday, I woke up and made the conscious decision to quit nicotine with a deadline of end of August. This time around I'm not gonna do it cold turkey and instead, ween myself off by decreasing the nicotine content progressively.
My plan was to use 6 nic, then mix the equiv to 4.5 nic, then go down to 3 nic. They unforutnately don't make nicotine free juice anymore, so I'll have to go cold turkey following 3 nic, but it'll be much more achievable than from 20 salt nic.
Alright, I've mixed down to 1-2mg/ml now but it's getting quite difficult LOL. I'm a lot more groggy and cranky throughout the day. I purchased 0.1mg/ml juice, which is pretty much flavored air and it's making me angry.
Less than two months left to go but I think I can do it.
In other news, I've been making a habit of going on a walk after I eat dinner now. I do about a 2hr walk or until I hit 10km. Not bad. I quite enjoy it - I'm trying to find new reasons to appreciate more of what we have here in BC and fortunately in Delta, I have a lot of green space to explore.
I don't think I could do a walk or jog on pavement, but I'd happily do it on a trail (prob cause of tree cover). 10km isn't too bad either, I've been doing it daily since last Saturday and it's pretty manageable - there's maybe 100m of elevation change (I live on a hill) and that's the most grueling part.

If you are looking to continue walking like this (kudos to you) I highly recommend getting a good set of shoes and consider getting professionally made insoles (not Dr. Scholl's!) This will protect your body in the long term and prevent chronic issues such as backaches, posture, nerve damage etc.

ON Whey on sale at Costco, vanilla for $69.99 per bag, chocolate for $89.99 per bag (premium due to cacao prices)
Cost per gram of protein is less than all other ones on the above list except for leanfit ($0.036 per gram for ON vs $0.34 per gram for Leanfit)
However ON blends way better, has better macros, and tastes better so it's worth the slight premium.

Between walking to work (~20 min each way), 30 min walk during break, and the small amount of walking during my shift, I'm hitting 10-12k each day pretty easily. Even on my off days I make an effort to reach 10k.
Walking pad is great cuz you can just plant it in front of your tv and walk while you watch something. Easiest way to burn calories and reach your step count.

One day on our recent trip we did 28,000 steps. Basically walking from 10am till 9pm never stopping for more than lunch a beer etc.
The most I’ve ever seen my step counter was a day in Disneyland and it was like 38,000 and that was walking from 7am till like 10pm outside of riding rides etc.
100,000 seems almost impossible unless you walk the entire 24 hours never stopping for more than a few minutes. You’d probably walk 35+ kilometres. Like Vancouver to Abbotsford or Chilliwack
I walk pretty fast and I have a walk I do up into Burnaby heights and back home, I walk pretty fast and it takes about 75 minutes to walk 9,000 steps at a very brisk pace, so 10 hours of that lol

problem we have here is that processed foods are much cheaper and usually the quick, mindless solution for what to eat today. we are definitely spoiled for choice but also very poorly educated when it comes to choosing our diets.
ive been going to the gym 3x a week for the last few weeks, feels pretty good. having it being semi-personal training helps in that i don't think of going to the gym as a choice, it's an appointment. its early still for me but i don't dread it so far. give it a few months and we'll see how i feel.

If you’re looking at the size of North America compared to the size of Europe, west Asia, North Africa there are for sure more options for fresh produce in that region compared to NA, but there is definitely no shortage of options here.
That said there is WAAAAAAAAAYYYYY more access to processed garbage here and a premium attached to quality ingredients that makes it very easy to eat like shit in North America for the average persons education levels around nutrition.

Gf weight is real. It's a struggle when you're dating and it's at it's peak when you first start dating. Eventually you'll reach that point where you can step in and say hey, I need to change what I'm eating lol. Especially if you're only seeing each other 1-2 days per week. That leaves you 5-6 days to control your intake and then you can relax when you're with her. That's what I've been doing since going back on macro.
GF weight is bullshit!
Been with the GF for 6 years now, and I stay looking big and lean, and still continue to get better at age 40, sitting at 195lbs right now, maybe 13-15% BF.
The GF is the same, I train her for weights, and she does all the spinning, pilates, yoga classes on the side herself.
If I'm staying in shape I expect my lady to do the same.
Don't get into a lazy habit putting on weight just because you're locked into a relationship.

I'm most definitely taking ownership of my own choices over the past couple of years, don't get me wrong lol. But I also accept that it's hard for people to change their eating habits and especially at our age. I've been with gf for the past year and a big part of that was sharing with her all my favourite place to eat at in Richmond! Plus that trip to Japan was a huge eating fest in itself. But yeah, I finally got to that point where I was sick of how fat I got and did something about it.

Mike doesn't have a gf weight problem because he gets a lot of time to himself to work out and not enough time with the gf. Tell her to stop all the overtime. :fullofwin:

still gotta give him credit because all of us are capable of eating like monsters on our own. every single girl i've ever dated has shown precisely zero control when it comes to food and they love to drag you into that. some were blessed with high metabolism, some were not. but absolutely none of them were willing to do something even resembling a macro. fad diets to slim down quickly for a friend/family's wedding? sure. actual discipline? hell no.

Going on first dates was bad for macros and lifting.
Most of my muscle loss is from golfing and playing volleyball. I'd saying gf ruins diet by max maybe 1-2 extra meals and 0-4 drinks a week.

That's why you try to keep 1st dates to drinks only, no food, or only an appy.
The muscle loss from those activities is minimal anyways, and if anything the cardio itself leans you out and makes your muscles pop out more visually (even with the minimal loss).
If you're a regular lifter going 4-5 days a week, you can easily maintain over the summer with 3 days a week if you're adding in some kind of a sport or cardio activity on those other days.
It's good for the joints too.

a lot of girls these days will accuse you of being cheap if you only do drinks on a first date. they'll also refer to such a date as "low effort" and quickly eliminate you for doing so. they'll still show up, but that's a one and done lol. in the end, it's ok because these shouldn't be the girls you give your attention to.
mikemhg
07-23-2025, 05:13 PM
^Totally agree, leave them to the side then, they'll be a headache down the line.
There's no point splurging on a first date, or going somewhere fancy, you might not even like each other. I remember being single years ago and going on 5 dates in a single week, the cost of that in a single week was nuts, all of them were either drinks and or food.
Frivolous dates add up, Vancouver isn't a cheap city, don't waste your money if you're chronically dating randoms.
That actually sounds like a great way to filter out the red flags

Added trick to first dates, always have an excuse that's early for the next day.
That way you can keep the date to to no more than 2 hours, and you have an out if the date sucks, it limits the cost of the date too.
If you like each other you can always circle back for a second one anyways.

Take a girl for something free on the first date. Go for a walk around Stanley park or some shit. The good ones like dudes that can have a conversation. Take them somewhere nice the second time if it’s worth it.

Always have an exit strategy... you never ever want to be stuck at a long meal and turns out the girl can't even hold a conversation. I had that before and was so sad as it was a friend's referral so I couldn't bail out at 4 PM "saying it's getting late"
Going for walks would work for BC cause everyone is chill; there are some DT chicks who are in heels and complain they cant' walk that far as they want to parking to be right at the front door of the restaurant.
thats why coffee is usually the best first date.. it can be 10 mins or it can be an hour, and if you really hit it off you can go for a walk and find something to do after. it gives both sides an easy out if it's not going well. first date is just about testing the waters after all.

This was a disadvantage that I did not expect LOL. You can't just bail or be that straight forward knowing that a friend is involved in this interaction.

Playing 2-4x golf a week at 2.5-5 hours a round, 1.5 hours of driving and then maybe a quick 1 hour social dinner after.
Takes up pretty much all of lifting time. But gonna dial back to max 1-2x a week now.
Still no excuse though, when I played vball and golf 5-6x a week, I could still gym 4x a week.

The reason why men "lose half" is because their wives tend to make less income, or no income at all, during marriage. Divorce in no fault jurisdictions is supposed to make both people equal after the relationship ends.
Is it fair for the spouse who earns little to no income to become destitute after a marriage ends? It's going to be pretty hard for a stay at home parent to earn an income after being out of the workforce after several years to several decades.
I've been an advocate of partnering up with your equal in both assets, earning potential, and upbringing for a long time, but I also realize that I'm in the minority. Men will be men and women will be women.
Anyway, lots of dad bods out there these days.

Few things, the HR lady resigned yesterday. CEO resigned long time ago. If I was HR lady, i woudl have negotiated a deal LOL. A hug doesn't mean NOTHING, so you better package me out.
In China, they changed since Feb 1 2025, u dont' auto get 50% so that's interesting.
China’s divorce property division laws, changed effective February 1, 2025. Some experts say the new divorce and property division law is driven by skyrocketing divorce rates.
The new law shifts away from the previous practice of automatic 50/50 asset splits in divorce. Instead, property division will be primarily based on who brought what into the relationship, and which parties and which party’s parents financially contributed to its acquisition.

I agree with this 100% and follow the same sentiments.
Zero interest in ever marrying a loser or someone that doesn't carry a career with somewhat equivalent means, nowadays especially where women are educated and have lots of opportunities.
I've never understood the types of guys who marry some province woman from a backwater third world country and when the marriage inevitably ends they're crying about getting taken to the cleaners for alimony and all that crap.
Idiots.
