A bit off topic but I went to see my doctor yesterday and he tells me I'm showing signs of early arthritis in my middle finger (ha) caused by my usage of a computer. My middle finger is what I use the most on my trackpad and he says the pain I'm experiencing (bone pain and having trouble extending my finger) is early arthritis. I can work to strengthen my tendons and muscles around it but the bone won't actually get better.

I had a blood test today to see how I'm doing in getting my blood sugar (A1C) and cholesterol levels down since I started working out and losing weight in Jan and it's working!

A1C is down from 5.8 to 5.6 so no longer pre-diabetic under any measurement.
LDL Cholesterol is down from 4.34 (high) to 3.69 (borderline, less than 3.4 is good).

My weight hasn't changed (173lb) but I'm hitting the weights 3-4 times a week now and working with a trainer so I'm making a lot more progress in the gym - I'm showing signs of actual shoulders and traps.

I'd really like to get down to 160lb by end of year but I'm making strength a higher priority for now. I figure if I maintain my diet and training that this will push my LDL and A1C well into the green by end of year.

Edit: I didn't get my test at Kensington as it was too hard to get an early appointment so I didn't get to meet Lifelabs Hottie. Maybe in 6 months.
Edit: Testosterone levels checked out good too.

Alright, I've mixed down to 1-2mg/ml now but it's getting quite difficult LOL. I'm a lot more groggy and cranky throughout the day. I purchased 0.1mg/ml juice, which is pretty much flavored air and it's making me angry.

Less than two months left to go but I think I can do it.

Not fitness related, but health related. On Saturday, I woke up and made the conscious decision to quit nicotine with a deadline of end of August. This time around I'm not gonna do it cold turkey and instead, ween myself off by decreasing the nicotine content progressively.



For those who know vaping, I went from 20mg salt nic for the past 5 years (if not more) down to 10mg salt nic a few months ago. Now I'm switching to free base which should help the nicotine strength.

I purchased
1 flavored 30ml x 6mg/ml
1 non-flavored 30ml x 6mg/ml
2 flavored 30ml x 3mg/ml

My plan was to use 6 nic, then mix the equiv to 4.5 nic, then go down to 3 nic. They unforutnately don't make nicotine free juice anymore, so I'll have to go cold turkey following 3 nic, but it'll be much more achievable than from 20 salt nic.

However, at home, I've been hitting 3 nic and I feel ok. A bit harder to wake up in the morn.. def very groggy unlike the instant wake up I usually get.

It'll also be cool to lose some weight by September, but I think I gotta focus on this first before trying to do too much at once.

I'm ahead of schedule. I've officially been off nicotine for almost a week now. 0 nic was interesting, so I woke up every morning hitting the flavored air pen anyway, and even tho it's 0 nic, it still provides a sense of relief.

I haven't smoked anything in about two days tho and it sucks big time lmao. You bet I still crave it. Gum helps. But damn I wonder if I'm gonna feel the cravings forever. Good thing it's more annoying to unplug my car and whatnot, so I'll be too lazy to drive to the vape store.

I’d like to get all that checked. I was a bit worried about it when I was drinking lots of beer but less concerned now. I do love deep fried shit but don’t eat it often. I’m pretty high on the carbs because I fucking love bread and it’s worth dying for if that’s what it takes, but most meals for me are meat and vegetables. Salt intake is relatively high probably.

Diabetes Canada says that about 30% of Canadians are pre-diabetic with another 15% being diabetic so almost half the population. Not sure how they count kids but it could mean that more than half the adult population has high blood sugar. These numbers are higher than what I've seen with Stats Can so take it with a grain of sugar but either ways there's a lot of folks

I was hoping my A1C would have come down more - I didn't go chicken/broccoli in the last 7 months but I did become a lot more conscious about my food choices but there's sugar (hidden) everywhere.

Type 2 diabetes runs in my family - my brother is about 15lbs more than me and he has to take meds for his A1C just to keep it below 7. Even when he was on a health kick and lost 20lbs he couldn't get below 6. He's resigned to the fact that he'll probably die early. Genetics sometimes sucks.

By age 45 the rec is that you get an annual blood test and some patients (like my brother) have a standing req as he goes every 3 months due to his high A1C. My doc offered to make my a standing one too as he knows I'm trying to get healthy so your doc won't have any concerns about you wanting one - a Telehealth call can get you a req no questions asked.

If you find you really enjoy getting blood tests you can other tests too like you can go jerk off into a cup and find out if your swimmers are healthy. Hard to beat jerking off into a cup between work calls and then rushing over to Lifelabs to get your sample in - this kind of stuff should be a mission in GTA or something.

I have been on a diet for more than 2 months, went from 190 to 169 pounds (weighed today) at 5 feet 6 inches tall, in my 30s. No longer have a big belly wearing loose fitting shirts compared to before, still noticeable amount of belly fat when taking off shirts. Still motivated to keep going, hopefully under 160 or even 150-155s..... Been losing 1-2 pounds per week

For me what worked and may work you guys is cutting out most of the carbs, white rice, bread etc... my wife only packs me meat and lots of veggies like carrot, cauliflower for lunch, I don't weigh everything but I do an estimate of the calories of each meal. I love ice cream, it's my guilty pleasure and I eat it almost everyday, you can eat your treats too, it's just about portion control and how much calories in and out. Dinner, some sort of protein, lots of veggies again, no white rice. If you like cheetos or any kind of chips go for it, just don't eat white rice and chips together, that was the main problem for me, just eating too much. The kicker is, I don't even feel like I'm on a diet still, and I don't feel hungry most of the time. you can still eat the food you like on a diet, it's about portion control and don't eat them all at the same time. Also try to minimize eating fatty meats like pork ribs or anything fried, you can still flavourful food using chicken breast/thighs, pork tenderloins but you have to have a good cook like my wife

And for the ice cream lovers, I used to eat lots of haagen daaz, they taste great but calorie dense, I have switched to chapman frozen yogurt, dutch chocolate/cappuccino flavour, they are literally half the calories of the haagen daaz, tastes pretty good too

I don't weight train, I walk in my basement for 30-45mins a day 3 to 5 times a week. Diet really matters a lot when you want to lose weight

Wanted to provide an update, I have been at 70kg/154pounds for over a week now, still dropping 300-500g of weight each week, have been eating 1500 calories per day since my last update. One thing I'm frustrated with, not sure if you guys in 30s/40s can relate, I can see my upper abs, but my lower belly fat is still pretty prominent even though the previous beer belly is mostly gone. I guess I have to drop another 10 pounds or more? I don't recall myself having this lower belly fat when I was in shape at 150 pounds when I was in my 20s...

I think it really comes down to training at that point. I fell for that that I believed if I slimmed down I could look kinda cut but totally not happening. I’ve dropped the 10# I wanted to and really have nothing left to lose after about 6 months of basically not drinking and eating well/cardio. But nothing short of focused muscle building in the spot will give the results I (and assume you) want.

Lower ab fat is normal in your 30s and 40s, we all accumulate fat over time, which is normal.

The only way to mitigate that is to drop more weight, but even then, you may never be as "lean" as you were in your early 20s, hormonal changes take a big part in that.

You can definitely work on your lower abs to tone that area, and correct posture so that your hips don't "push" out the stomach, giving that bloated look to the lower stomach. T2Bs (toes to bars) and static holds/hollow body holds are great to force correct your core, bringing that lower back more flat, and therefore pulling that stomach in, giving a better look.

When I first started working out when I was overweight, I gained 15lbs before my weight started to drop. I went from 185lbs to 200lbs before sliding back down to 180 over a year. I also cut my carbs hard during that time though.

you need to be in a slight deficit in order to slim down. anytime a person works out without reducing intake, you'll just get bigger. your gains are literally pushing your fat outwards making you feel and look fatter than before you started working out. it's the same reason people tell you there's no such thing as targeted weight loss (ie doing situps thinking that alone will get you a six pack).

Plus you'd be surprised how affordable some overwater bungalows are in Maldives, I mean they're not cheap and you can certainly go super luxurious and spend your monthly salary per night. But you can have a pretty nice experience for say, 1K/night.

Worked out to be like $1K/night in CAD. But that's only part of the story, you still have to pay to get there from the airport which can cost up another $500-800 depending on if you want to take a speedboat or seaplane. We did one each way. My advice? Do the seaplane both ways.

For that price you get probably a 4* accommodation equivalent in a first world country. But you're really paying for the isolation, even though you're surrounded by other bungalows it feels like you're alone in the middle of nowhere:

You should totally do it Mike and soon, I looked into Bora Bora as well but it looks like it's at the very least 2-3x as expensive since thre's fewer resorts, is a nicer island and you're technically in France.

The thing with The Maldives over the others is that it's really in the middle of fucking nowhere. The islands are all volcanic atolls, so your bungalow is built right up to the coral reef. The water is clear as a bottle of Evian and there's sea life all over the place. I could stand outside with no snorkeling gear in 3 ft deep of water and I'm surrounded by half a dozen nurse sharks, nemos, and a shit ton of other fish.

5k was a lot for a vacation because i was always doing it backpacker style or going bike touring.

The maldives/french polynesia is one of those once in a lifetime trips to save up and splurge on. Most people dont go back again unless you are baller and/or live closer.
Flights are expensive and long travel time.
Once there you need to pay $500-800USD per person on a floatplane.
Then you're stuck at that resort so unless your resort offers board you will pay a lot of $ for meals.

But nowadays thanks to the weak CAD even a nice all-inclusive resort in the rivera maya/cancun/tulum is pushing $10K

Started cycling this year, about once or twice a week this Summer.

Last week I rode to Bowen Island from East Van. Brought back 3 bottles of cider too, so Going up massive hills, while trying not to jostle the bottles was definitely a challenge. Guy who worked at the brewery was nice enough to give me some paper bags to cushion the bottles.

I weigh myself on and off. Weight stays relatively the same but my man boobs shrank and the Filipino coffee shop owner at my workplace told my flip coworker I was "payat"

No goal set, I just want to see my pecker when I'm looking down and not have tits bigger than the girls I work around.

For me it sorta works. Flattens the man boobs and shapes the belly somewhat but I feel like it gives me the proportions of a marshmallow. You can get around this with an oversized heavy cotton t-shirt.

Need to turn this thread around ffs.

It's annoying how weight goals finally end up landing by the end of summer, this seems to happen every damn year. The bit of visceral fat on the stomach and lower back has finally started to melt off.

I started off in June at 200lbs, now I've dropped to my goal of 190lbs, achieved from pretty much from fasting with 1.5 meals a day, and cycling 40-50kms 2-3 days a week along with the regular lifting 4-5 days weekly.

Now that fall and winter is coming, the ass sitting will again commence, no more cycling and outdoor shit outside of skiing and maybe some hikes. Those 10 pounds will probably creep back by next spring, rinse and repeat :lol

Going to make an effort this winter to no longer succumb to the weekly late night McDonalds craving.

My goal is to continue on with my macro during work days and be normal on my off days. Since I'm working 6-7 days per week, it should keep me in line lol. Now, the problem is that there's almost always free snacks/food at work so temptation always surrounds me. But, if I'm on my macro, at least the damage done is to a lesser degree.

I'll continue on with weight lifting and keep up my 10k steps per day. Being consistent is all I'm aiming for. I no longer care about reaching new milestones for bench/squats/deadlifts.

My only other consideration is perhaps switching my macro from cold food to something warm for winter months. Right now only my french toast in the morning is hot. Everything else is cold (overnight oats, salad x 2).

I'm planning to keep working with my trainer through till the end of the year - I see him 1-2 times a week and I like the results - I'm truly training to failure and the my technique keeps improving and now we're adding plyometrics to our program.

I had set a goal of running 5k in under 35m and I had wanted to see if I could get to 160lb but both seem like a stretch to me right now - maybe 165lbs is possible (from 172lb).

Winter goals: calorie deficit because thanksgiving and xmas are gonna fuck me up big time. I'm plopped in front of a computer but I do have a standing desk. Company has no wellness budget but I'll keep an eye out for a used walking pad/treadmill

My friend has very generously lent me his indoor cycling trainer for the winter. We'll see if I can stick to the plan.

Working as a lot bitch at a dealership was the best weight loss hack. All I did was switch to sugar-free drinks and the weight came down. Was 219 at my lowest then covid hit and I gained it back lol

I’m supposed to go as Maui for Halloween cause my daughter wants to be moana, but you can sub in. I’ll be heyhey.
My goals for winter are to stay healthy and fit during snowboard season. I want 25 days on the hill this year. It’s kept me pretty strong even though it’s not going to get me ripped. All workouts really are going to be concentrating on keeping me from getting sore and being able to ride longer, fall harder and be able to get back up from slams. my goals are basically to find some other fitness program or go to the gym once my contract ends in jan. something that motivates me enough to keep going. thinking about martial arts or possibly crossfit or other HIIT classes. im not sure if i can motivate myself to go to the gym alone. if i try those classes out for like a month each and dont really like them then i might resort to that.

also since my wife's sched has opened up, no reason why we shouldnt be able to ski more.

i peaked at 148 lb and settled back at 155-157 which i think is a good balance if i can keep tone. i'm going to try to maintain this maybe edge closer to low 150's if possible. it's too hard to lose more. i'm 5'6-5'7" in 40's

i'd like try to shed fat on the lower abs but that's like the hardest and last place where i have to shed. already do intermittent fasting, portion meals, and trying to cut booze again (i fell off the wagon when i gained the weight back).

if i wanted to lose mega weight i would definitely just do tons of cardio like sign up for a granfondo or half marathon and train 3x a week.. you will just melt pounds off your body and be able to eat anything you want.

i'd rather do something like that then count every gram of food that goes in my body

My goal is to continue on with my macro during work days and be normal on my off days. Since I'm working 6-7 days per week, it should keep me in line lol. Now, the problem is that there's almost always free snacks/food at work so temptation always surrounds me. But, if I'm on my macro, at least the damage done is to a lesser degree.

I'll continue on with weight lifting and keep up my 10k steps per day. Being consistent is all I'm aiming for. I no longer care about reaching new milestones for bench/squats/deadlifts.

My only other consideration is perhaps switching my macro from cold food to something warm for winter months. Right now only my french toast in the morning is hot. Everything else is cold (overnight oats, salad x 2).

You should DM VLAD, I know that basement pussy hasn't seen a mouth in a minute now.

You get used to the deficit eventually, the first few weeks are the hardest, but once your body acclimates, it's fine.

The trick is to wait as long as you can to eat, I find most people aren't as ravenous in the morning/early noon so it's easy to make it through that part of the day.

You don't even need to be extreme with it. It seems a lot of guys here are either WFH or some kind of sedentary office job, yet are conditioned to eat three meals or more a day.

Even if you cut out one of those meals at the start, it will make a big difference, go from there.

My goals for winter are to stay healthy and fit during snowboard season. I want 25 days on the hill this year. It’s kept me pretty strong even though it’s not going to get me ripped. All workouts really are going to be concentrating on keeping me from getting sore and being able to ride longer, fall harder and be able to get back up from slams. What exercises do you find useful to condition for ski season? I've never really figured that part out, my legs are always fried the first few outings, I find it's a hard sport to prep for outside of just doing it.

Yeah wall sits, leg lifts, leg presses, biking and when I have the fucking balls to eat shit on concrete skateboarding is the absolute best. It sucks cause my ankles are beat from a solid 20 years of skating and another 10 of doing it casually, and I just can’t stay away from kickflips, but skating the park and pumping transitions is great for it. Planks and stuff for core strength as well.

Yeah, hospital. Luckily my job doesn't require me to work overnight shifts so I can regulate my meal times very precisely.

Breakfast usually between 06:00-9:00 (depending on shift)
Lunch at 12:00
Afternoon snack 16:00-17:00
Dinner at 19:00

Some of the nurses are absolutely awful when it comes to ordering food lol. Church's/Jollibee, McD's, pizza, bubble tea, cakes for bdays, chips and popcorn, donuts and coffee loaded up with cream and sugar. I manage to say no to these things a good 90% of the time. Then you have friends of the department and families of patients bringing us things too. If I were less disciplined, I'd become a fat motherfucker working here.

Once you find a macro that works for you, you get used to it after some time. It's also key to use lean protein and a good amount of fibre to keep you feeling full. I've always noticed that after doing my macro for a few weeks, my appetite actually decreases. So when I go out to eat I get full rather quickly compared to how I would have normally eaten beforehand.

As for burning calories, perhaps it's because I never do cardio but the days of me eating whatever I want and gaining no weight are LONG gone lol. My metabolism simply isn't what it was so there's no amount of (reasonable) exercise that will keep me in a deficit.

Also, not for nothing but I've been doing a loose macro this time around. In previous rounds, I weighed literally everything and it gave me incredible results but this time I'm playing the long game. I have a rough idea of where I'm at for caloric intake and am really only weighing two things: chicken breast and egg whites.

It's been the easiest in terms of effort so far!

I hate cardio for two reasons: I've always hated running and it causes a huge spike in your hunger which means overeating. So in the end, I'm exhausted, covered in sweat, eat too much and end up gaining weight instead lol. If it works for you (like it does many people) all the more power to ya. Me, I'll stick to weight training :)

Oh i used to love running but i dont do it anymore. Too much time spent training then one little injury and youre done for a few months. Some people are very resilient but once i started getting injuries they kept happening and i quit. I still like cardio but dont run anymore

I haven't been doing anything crazy, but with a new (better) job I'm not stress-snacking as much and trying to pack lunches that are just a bit smaller than I'd like has me down 10lbs which is nice. The tricky part is suppliers and reps and people keep dropping off donuts and all kinds of random treats at the office but I'm trying to avoid them lol.

Only committing to a month and waiting for motivation is a great way to never see real results. Schedule going in 4x/week (3x is bare minimum) and show up for 6 months. The real trick is not to go HARD on the first month, I tell my clients it takes 20 classes before you're really in it. Until then feel like you're moving at 80% ability so you can come in tomorrow.

So, I ran out of salad greens yesterday and took the opportunity to experiment with roasted veggies as a warm replacement. TBH, I swear my body was starting to reject the cold salad greens lol.

Anyways, I kept it simple:

Potatoes (only item I weighed), carrots, broccoli and red onions (1/4 of an onion per meal). Cut to approximately same sizes.

Seasoned with:
Thyme
Rosemary
Basil
Oregano
Salt & Pepper
Garlic powder
Spray with light coat of oil

Air fryer 400 degrees for 9 mins (without the broccoli first), remove, shake, add broccoli, 9 mins again.

Probably shouldn't have surprised me but this was pretty damn delicious and had my whole apartment smelling great :lol The broccoli comes out a bit charred and crispy and was easily the best tasting veggie in there. The onions were sweet after air frying too!

I may choose to add zucchini to the mix as well :considered:

Meals are now

1. French toast and egg whites
2. Roasted veggies with chicken breast
3. Overnight oats with strawberries/blueberries
4. Roasted veggies with chicken breast

I'll calculate my rough calorie total again later on. If I'm in too much of a deficit I'll have my sorbet/ice cream again. I was genuinely full after dinner last night and didn't feel like eating dessert :ahwow:

With hardy veg like broccoli no need to overthink it.

Roast it hard with a bit of oil for heat transfer. Any herbs etc you add before that will just burn or won't add much.

Finish with kosher or flaky sea salt, some acid (lemon, vinegar, etc), more fat like good finishing olive oil or butter (unless counting calories), maybe a crack of pepper, and you're good

Key is to make sure the middle is cooked but still firm.

Tbh my meal prep hack that people are always surprised about is to pack raw broccoli (also works with cauliflower) and not cook it before you pack it.

That way when yoi reheat the meal, the broccoli is perfectly steamed with crunch but not overcook into mush.

2 tbsp natural peanut butter
1/4 cup cottage cheese
2 tbsp truvia brown sugar replacement
1 tsp baking powder
1 tbsp chocolate chips (started with 2 but that ended up being too much imo)
Pinch of salt

Macros:

431 calories
43g protein
45g carbs
20g fat

If I am well enough, I still try to do a certain amount of light exercise even if I don't feel too well. A lot of times, I find that if I can get my circulation going, I tend to feel better / recovery faster.

Also, I am a total believer in sun + outdoor therapy. We're gonna be having some really good fall weather today and tomorrow, so dress warmly, and head out for a walk in the sun. It'll probably do you some good.

First few days of symptoms, I don't. My body is under attack so the best things I can do are rest, drink fluids and let my body fight its battle.

I usually won't return to the gym until the day after I start feeling better. That's when I usually have sufficient energy to sweat more, hydrate more and circulate more.

Everyone is different I feel. Personally, I give myself time to rest and find that my recovery is faster that way. If it's minor, I might get a quick gym session in but I know it'll just tire me out even more which means I'll end up spending more time in recovery.

Yeah I get it every year! Any immunity is welcome imo. Even if it happens to be the wrong strain (usually based on two most prominent strains in Aus), it's still better than nothing. Haven't had cold/flu symptoms in basically forever despite high potential to come across it at work. Covid is another animal though. It was rough going through that, even as a healthy person.

I work in an open office space the size of your average technology campus and there are all sorts of people who...culturally.....do not practice hygiene, including washing hands, wearing masks, coming in to work sick, and cleaning up after themselves. I never once got sick in other offices. Just this one I currently work at. :mad:

unfortunately, even in healthcare it isn't 100% across the board. like you mentioned, people don't clean up after themselves so shared spaces are often filthy. our sink in the break room is often cluttered with dirty dishes that sit there for 1+ weeks. just recently a dirty glass lunch container was left on top of our microwave for about 2 weeks. it started getting moldy. these are supposed to be grown ass adults i work with :facepalm:

It's hard to tell sometimes. Your first assumption is that their place must be a total dump. However, you might find that they are neat and tidy at home and simply exhibit these selfish tendencies at work where they can get away with it. Either way, it's annoying as hell to deal with and I would think less of that person if I saw them in the act.

Are we starting up a weight gain thread yet? Thanksgiving just passed, we got Halloween next and then we're at Xmas.

I'm pretty much been stuck around 172-173lb since July - I just don't have the discipline to manage a calorie deficit properly. OTOH, my gym work is paying off - when I run into people I haven't seen in a few months and keep getting the "Have you been working out? You look great." comments - I wished I had taken photos of when I started as it can be hard to see the progress sometimes (I did have some new headshots done recently and I do look appreciably thinner than a year ago).

OTOH, my gym work is paying off - when I run into people I haven't seen in a few months and keep getting the "Have you been working out? You look great." comments - I wished I had taken photos of when I started as it can be hard to see the progress sometimes (I did have some new headshots done recently and I do look appreciably thinner than a year ago).

Here's how I'm seeing it: take it week by week during the fall/winter/holiday months. Even a few days at a time if that's all you can manage.

Allow yourself to enjoy the holidays and the good food. If you can manage to squeeze in 3-7 days of a controlled deficit, great! That's still better than zero control altogether. It's kind of like how those food challenge youtubers stay fit/relatively skinny: deficit 6 days of the week, food challenge once per week.

Your body can only absorb so much in one day of pigging out, the rest just goes to waste. If you're in a deficit the rest of the week, you'll be able to stay on track.

A 20 lb swing in less than a year is huge. Too many beers on the golf course or something? Us uncs with kids have an excuse for laziness... not young guys with money to spend at the gym, personal trainers, and all of the time in the world to meal prep and track macros.

I find I never vary more than 5# either way from centre but my obeseness fluctuates substantially in there. I can be 175 and fit or 175 and fat in a few months time pending diet and exercise but never seem to get far off my weight.

Lazy lifestyle changes due to early stage dating + gf debuff.

Stopped playing,
- golf 1-2 days less in exchange for teaching gf how to golf a week is 15-30,000 steps gone - 1,000 - 2,000 calories surplus
- racket sport 1-4 hours a week x 2 days = 600 calories surplus
- Volleyball season ending for summer 700 cal x 3 session = 2,100 calorie surplus
- stopped running 1x a week

Combined that's already 4,700 calories or 1.3lbs a week x 12 weeks of summer = 16lbs + 4 lbs because it's sept and oct and I'm not fixing it

This is before adding beers that my gf likes to drink, travel, potlucks, extra eating from dating, etc. My average daily steps has gone up in 2025 though, averaging 9,900 steps per day so far and that's not always wearing my apple watch for sports.

Honestly, I hate exercise and doing hard things, but that's life. Body fat is around 18ish % atm, haven't gymmed for 5-6 months. Travelled too much the last 12 months. /endrant

Yeah, if I move by 3lbs it's really noticeable for me - if I'm up 3lbs in a couple days it's pretty much guaranteed that I'm taking 3 shits that day to get back down. I can't imagine moving 10lbs in a few weeks (or on a vacation) like some folks here.
