so i just paid a couple of gewilo boys 450 dollars to clean all my windows today. Quite a few windows!!! it took these boys 3h to do the job... i only gave them a 20 dollar tip (each). In hindsight, I feel like I should have tipped them more.

Reasons for not tipping them more:

1) it was raining, not their fault, but see #2

So my kid brother (23) is about to graduate and has been having trouble finding a job or even an internship. I've set him up with my colleagues with industry, one of them being RZD, who said he's cooked. That's fine, standards are diff out in NYC. I've suggested people he should talk to and leverage my network, cause at least they'll give him the time of day, he didn't do that. Any of it.

I set up a volunteer opportunity for him at the upcoming WebSummit Vancouver conference, said to be the "Olympics of Tech" and was previously known as Collision in Toronto. I'm thinking, he'll volunteer one or two days, and he gets the next day to go roam, explore MasterClasses, network, go to after party events, etc. In my opinion - it's a fantastic opportunity to connect with people who can make or suggest hiring decisions, at least to get the foot in the door.

Kid goes like "Is there food?". I say no, and he looks turned off from it. (wtf u think I'm gonna feed you when I need you to volunteer? There's no paid food for me either.) Then I feed in the above opportunities line and his gf that's visiting joins in on the convo - i'm pretty pissed off at this point. Like I'm handing you an opportunity and you don't jump on it? Sit the fuck down. Anyway, he says, idk ask her if it's worth it. And I tell her briefly what it's about and she says "you should do it" (no shit dumb fuck - also why even ask her). I think your brother is just one bad apple. There's lots of hard working kids. On my team at Amazon we had two interns convert to permanent. One ended up leaving for family reasons (mom was hospitalized and needed to provide care, which sucks for her career). The other one is a go getter who's still here, I'm not a fan of some of her work but she's still here and she works hard.

The reality is, in tech, you aren't getting in the door without having done coop during school or willing to put in the time to do an internship. It was like that when I started in 2012, and it's only gotten worst.

It will continue to get worse as projects in general are too complex and budgets too tight for teams/companies to give juniors a chance.
AI has gotten good enough to replace a lot of internship level work, which makes it less likely for companies to hire interns and juniors, most positions are going to be for intermediate or up.

The short sighted-ness of the industry to not bring up the next crop of developers is not lost on me, but that's a whole other can of worms.

I came over from Alberta as banana as they come. Richmond is the reason I even bothered learning Cantonese. I was suddenly surrounded by people who all spoke in their own language so I had to learn or feel left out.

But really though, I think it’s always good to have kids doing something you love as well. I gave my son the Nikon FE2 I got from my dad to learn about photography.

I wouldn’t say he’s got photographer’s eyes now. But he understands the whole aperture-shutter-iso relationship now, manual focusing and really paying attention on making a composition rather than just snap away as it costs quite some money to have every frame developed.

And he even learned how to take a lens apart to fix small problems by researching on YouTube. It’s pretty cool seeing little dudes focusing on mechanical stuff.

You kind of have to throw out the top ratings and the bottom and see where it lands. I find stuff hovering around 4.2 is typically good as the 1 stars are almost always insane customer complaints.

I was cruising google street view and came across some Esso that had a 1.2 rating on the west side. Most complaints were about the shitty car wash however there were a couple that were pretty hilarious

That's not really our relationship with the UK. The King is in town in his role as King of CANADA, not King of England. Canada is a constitutional monarchy so we have a King and we choose it to be the person who happens to be King of England b/c we are a member of the British Commonwealth but when we're referring to him we're referring to him as our head of state, not as England's.

Heads of states exist in nearly all countries. In some cases the head of state is also the head of gov't (like the US) but in most cases they are actually different (France, Japan, England, Germany etc). Even Russia separates the head of state and head of gov't (so does China) but in both the Russian and China case the head of state is who is in charge.

If we didn't have the British monarchy we'd just have a different head of state that we'd "kowtow" to unless we opted for a Presidential system (like the US) which is a pretty horrible system compared to the Parliamentary system.

I've been a few times.
1) it's Peiking duck. it's NOT the typical chinese hong kong style where you ONLY get the skin
b) they freaking slice it with so much meat in it.
2) you will get the neck pieces and you're suppose to dip it with sugar.

The bone part is a bit of a hit or miss. I lvoe it when they deep fry it. Other think it's meh.

The service you get there is really really top notch. From a Chinese place, you are definitely getting the service and decor. Not really ideal for the duck if you're ONLY going / judging that.

Came back from Montreal and everything I heard about it is true

Lots of construction
Shit traffic
Race car like drivers on the highways
Weird traffic configurations
Rude people
Slooooow service at restaurants
HUMIDITY

Now the pros:

Not a sleepy town
Lots to see and do
Old architecture (hence the construction)
Food choices and overall quality (despite the slow service)
Not enough time in the day to explore (I was there for 6 nights)

Also did the drive to Quebec. Other than a huge truck convoy (not sure what it was about), the drive is pretty nice considering the distance.

Old Quebec was fantastic and worth it for first timers. Lots of photo ops and varying cuisine and it was 30 degrees when I was there and it was just perfect (despite the humidity). People were a bit nicer there than Montreal.

Lots of Asians were gathering around some random red door (including my gf). I don't know why till I found it was part of a scene in some K-Slop series. WOW A RED DOOR!

I'd go again but not anytime soon. The Cathedrals are just spectacular inside. We've defiinitely fallen in contemporary design language by comparison.

noclue actually nails it. Da Dong is also my favorite among all the Peking Ducks in Beijing and it's the go-to place for many of my Beijing-native friends.

Quanjude is ok. But the problem with them outside of China is that they tried to become this fine-dining thing that I don't think it goes well with the original Peking duck. Just bring me the damn duck, and the duck fried rice and soup like QJD in Beijing. That's all I ask for when it comes to Peking duck

I have been to QJD Vancouver twice, while the flavour was ok, I think both instances the food came out colder than what I'd have preferred. If I'm doing to guess, it's they took too long to plate everything fancy. But other than that, the service was good and it's like a more pretentious Chinese food experience.

Can't comment on the price though as I was invited there both occasions.

I managed to pick up some Bosch winter wipers for our Corolla last winter and they performed quite well. It's warming up now so the rubber material isn't as happy compared to when it's in the single digits.

For summer/fall, I've always stuck with factory. I can't speak for Honda, but you can just buy the rubber insert/refill from Toyota. It's not the cheapest but they are better than the aftermarket options out there. They seem to last the longest and have the cleanest wipe compared to other ones I've tried like Michelin and whatnot.

A number of people here on the forums are adamant about getting the Michelin wipers from Costco when on sale because they are cheap and disposable, but I don't find they are very effective and don't last very long. And like Badhobz mentioned in an earlier post, they look awful. All the time, effort, and heartaches of dealing with them aren't worth it to me but I know some of you are die-hard Costco fans. I can't bring myself to return them after 5 years of use. :lol

Spy Balloon's RX is the only lexus in the fleet that doesnt use J hooks (another made in canada travisty) so i was forced to either buy toyota inserts or bosch icons. Ever since using bosch icons, i havent switched back to inserts. Her car is 2018 and ive only gone through 2 sets so far.

They hold up during the heat, and the cold of winter. No scraping, and a nice clean swipe with no noise. That why i went with these for the hitlerbox.

All the other cars i usually just throw on Costco Michelin wipers, although recently they have been getting worse and worse every year.
The best set was the Michelin Stealth wipers they had a few years ago. Back then, even the packaging was more substantial and came with all the adapters.

They said $135 x2 for the 2 places because my discounts just expired. I said I wanted to cancel. She sent me to another department the price was brought down to $86 for each place. Took 26 min. Now here is where it gets more fucked up. I check online and they where not just going to charge me $135 but they where going to charge me $135 plus $20 for unlimited internet.
I bet there are some old people or people who don't check there bill that are paying $155 for 1 gig internet.

A few days ago I see that Telus has charged for $300 for something. I check the bill online. It's the cellphone bill and more than 50% of the bill is taxes. WTF? I call them. They say it's for taxes on a phone I bought. I bought the phone outright 2 months ago. I tell them you can't charge me for taxes 2 months after I bought the phone. I said i want to return the phone. Over an hour later they transfer me to another person. In 15 min he reversed the charges. To a total of 1 hour and 46 min.

Reading more recent posts online about Telus it seems like they’ve shifted into full scam mode. A lot of comments basically saying they’ve added tiers of customer support who have almost zero control on accounts or billing. People claim to have spent 5-8 hours simply to cancel accounts etc. hiring people who are knowingly bad at the English language into their customer support etc.

Also the tiers of contracts in terms of security and TV/Internet services handcuff most ignorant people into either renewing with Telus or paying huge fees to get out of contracts (almost all security contracts are 3 years, which basixally require wifi to work with almost all products) while TV and internet services are 2 year contracts which add to the “bundled” savings.

Also increasingly more and more horror stories about contractor technicians. Saw one recently the guy spent 7 hours at the home, drilled a single hole, covered the exterior and interior penetrations with painters tape, then walked away from the job saying he couldn’t do it :lol

Shit company all around. If your services are working and you don’t need to call anyone for support, be thankful lol.. my home services come up for renewal in sept and im going to grind them endlessly until i get what i want.

To Donks comment above regarding the internet speeds, 90% of residential customers could live with 75mb/s on fiber. Fiber has almost no bottle neck with their bandwidth so as long as you’re not consistently pulling 75mb/s on some device, you’ll be perfectly fine.

That’s obviously why Telus has created these tiers with 300mb/s being the slowest. Until recently I was on 150mb/s and never once experienced a single issue. Then the agent tried to tell me I’m on 75 and I “need” more, was ready to say bitch, every single customer has a minimum of 150 on fiber as they wanted to eliminate the background programming, I’m running speed tests getting 180mb/s on a “75” profile so why do I need 300?

Usual Telus hacks in my condo lobby, cornering me in the mailbox area (I should have skipped mail check that day). Basically laughs at what I'm paying monthly, said he could get me a bunch of extra features added to my plan and my price would still be lower. At no point did he mention signing a contract. All he did was prop up what he was 'giving to me' and 'lowering my bill' while talking fast in a rural ass Indian accent.

He was going to give me a security camera FOR MY FUCKING 500SQ FT CONDO THAT I LIVE IN ON MY OWN. And I'm barely home. Oh nooooo, someone gonna steal my baking soda and flip flops?!?!

I had to ask if it's a brand new contract and he danced around it a bit before saying yes 'but but but savings!'

I said 'no, I'm moving out soon'.
