Got my Tamron 1.4x SP AF TC ... SAMPLE PICS/initial impressions inside!
oooh look what came in the mail today!
First impressions:
I'm really happy that it matches the colour of my 70-200 f4L perfectly
It communicates the minimum f-stop as 5.6
It focuses every bit as fast as without the TC
I can't see any more CA/reduction of IQ than the lens without it...
Without further ado...here are a couple sample shots (just walked outside of my house)...will do some better pics soon
obligatory branches with white sky shot
And here's a sample of what I figure would pretty much be the worst possible IQ I could get out of it:
lens @ 200mm w/ TC (280mm total)
ISO 3200
f 5.6 (aperture wide open)
1/100 sec
handheld
30D with 70-200 f4L
I know it's a little underexposed, but it's just a test...no PP, of course

Just to let you know when shooting on a crop body its: 200mm x 1.4TC x 1.6Crop = 448mm goodness!

oh I know I didn't want to complicate too much by throwing that into the works too...the point was simply that the lens was at its biggest possible magnification
and I agree...448mm (9x magnification) is awesome...I really missed the magnification my old Sigma 75-300 gave me, but not the IQ...well now I've got the best of both worlds lol

Thanks Yeah, that was one of the biggest reasons I got it...My g/f and I go to Jasper quite a bit in the summer and go for hikes all the time, plus we're planning a trip to the States (SoCal/Las Vegas/Grand Canyon) this summer and I figured this may come in handy
Really gotta get a grip for the 30D now, though because it's getting VERY unbalanced and borderline uncomfortable.

You should swing by vancouver and pick my up before that trip =)
I have been wanting to drive through there for a while now, almost made it last year, but my buddy had to find a place to live or he would have been homeless when we got back haha

haha...in the spring of '07 we went down to Monterey, Cali and back (with a few days in San Francisco) and I was homeless the whole time lol...I decided if I was going to move, I might as well move out of my place a month early, save some money and let the rent I'm saving pay for the trip

is it just me or does the saturation and contrast look kind of weak? kind of like there is a white film over the photos. are the pictures like that without the TC? I also have the 70-200 F4 and have thought about getting a TC.

Huh? Err, no. The 30D is a 1.6x. The 1D mkIII is a 1.3x crop.

tallshorty: Nope, saturation and contrast are great...they probably look "weak" because 99% of the people who post pics on the net will bump the sat/contrast sky-high before posting them. (If you look at the first pic, the yellow/red signs as well as the fire hydrant in the background are very faithfully reproduced).
Senna's right...MOST Canon DSLRS (10/20/30/40/50D, XT/XTi/XS/XSi, etc) are 1.6x (I'm a huge fan of ultra-wide angles, and only wish it was 1.3x lol).

i have the same converter.. i noticed it made my images... much softer.. like MUCH MUCH softer. and the bokeh.. isn't exactly to die for... but for some stuff its okay i guess

you won't get to-die-for bokeh with a min aperture of 5.6 anywhere (assuming you throw it on an f4 lens), that's not really the TC's fault...as for soft...you may have just gotten a bad copy.
I was covering the rescue/recovery of the two dead snowmobilers near McBride, BC last week and took my 30D/Tamron TC/70-200 with me and I'm very pleased with the quality of the images. When I'm feeling less lazy I'll throw one or two up here to give you an idea.
