of course not,
every sport has professional and recreational levels; just not many people have seen it played at the professional level, so everybody assumes it's a sport for colorful fags.
of course, badminton players have about the worst bathing-suit body ever...
one muscular arm, giant bulging wrists, fat upper legs and thighs, and agile lower legs and ankles.

It looks like the hit exploded less than 3 feet from the target. The birdie would lose a lot of energy the further it has to travel, so unless your face is right there, i don't think you have to worry about getting your skull cracked.
