Just did a re-install
I just did a complete format/re-install after 4years as things started to get buggy. I've got a slow athlon xp 2200+ with 512m ram and a geforce 64meg, (secondary comp) I just put xp pro corporate on it but I've got a few things. I installed free avg and my system idle process was running about 90% ecu, lagging up the system just at idle. I un-installed it and its good as new again so I was wondering if there is another antivirus worth trying. I dont want anything with spyware, or that pops up and bugs me every-day. Just something that runs in the background and leaves me alone. I also have this red shield in the right corner of my screen because updates is turned off. How can I make this shield go away!!
Anything else I should put on the system? I turned off RPC in the admin menu, updated windows media player, updates windows live messenger, etc but anything else I can do to speed up this out of date system?? Its not used whatsoever for games, just web browsing and storage for pictures.

I use AVG too .. then I notice how AVG used up a lot of CPU. So I remove AVG
and now I am happy with antivir

"System Idle Process" is supposed to be running at >90% when you're idle. It means >90% of the CPU is idle and not being dedicated to another process....
Also, NOD32 is the lightest, least intrusive antivirus I've used.

its all up and running good, im using antivir now. Dosnt seem to anoy me so far...
I'd like to add bass/treble controls to my volume control. Can this be done easily? Even a piggyback program should be ok

should be right click on sound icon > properties

it's usually based on ur mobo/sound card drivers
but in programs for video/music you can tweak it with its respective EQ
i.e. winamp, MPC

^^I'm pretty sure he wants to add EQ settings into his advanced volume control menu; and he already has the volume icon in taskbar (Also, there is no "Properties" link after right clicking the icon in XP)

QFT. Overall EQ setting changes will have to be made in your sound card console.

yeah you might have to update your drivers to get the full abilities of your sound card, check in the device manager
