HDMI cables 1.2 vs 1.3
Went to NCIX and saw their HDMI cable for sale at 12.99$, this compare to the HDMI cables sold at Futureshop for $50+, of course naturally I thought it was a good deal.
So i asked the NCIX geek squad leader, whats the difference of their product vs futureshop rip-off. He said there is no difference except futureshop sells 1.3 hdmi and NCIX is 1.2 version.
He couldn't tell me whats the difference of 1.2 vs 1.3. So before I spend my money, can someone explain to me?
I am planning to use it with a Blue Ray player, and PS3, Also I run these components through my yamaha receiver model 6140 and then pass video signal to my Plasma. (everything needs to be hdmi)

1.2 certified cables were produced and certified before the 1.3 spec was out.
NCIX also sell 1.3b spec cables.
http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=62...R%20TECHNOLOGY
I would get my cables from monoprice.com if a need more than 1 or 2.

bump, so to play PS3, do we need 1.3a? From what I read in wiki, the cheapest 1.0 will do for BluRay.
Experts plz chime in

Any HDMI will work for PS3
1.2 vs 1.3 vs 1.4 is explained in that wikipedia link
If you don't understand what they're saying....basically the higher the numer(ie. 1.4) the newer the technology. HDMI 1.0 is first gen HDMI and was only tested to do so much. As technology get better, the demand on the cable is higher so they make it better.
From what I remember the only major diff between the old and new is how thick a guage the wires are inside the cable.
I would buy a 1.3a or 1.4........
The cables basically cost the same anyways

They are all backwards compatible, so the higher version, the better.
Go with 1.3a or higher.
You don't want to buy new HDMI cables everytime you upgrade your equipment.
1.4 is the newest

HDMI can carry sound and audio...but you should make sure your amp supports it.
Some of the "lower-end/older" amps don't allow both video and sound via HDMI

You do NOT need 1.3 unless you require the ability to decode Deep Color and x.v.Color formats, neither of which are supported by Blu-Ray (which is 8-bit). Some Blu-Ray players will upsample to support these, but then you need a TV that supports them as well. And if your TV supports them, it can probably upsample anyway.
So bottom line is, 1.3 is pointless right now. If the price is more than $0.01 higher than a 1.2 cable you find, get the 1.2.

Older cables will just fine with 1.4. Nothing physically has changed on the way the cables are build.

1.3 supports Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD, which is pretty common in today's Amps and BDs
OP's amp won't support those audio modes, but if he ever upgraded his amp down the road, why buy new cables?

From what wiki says, if you're going to bitstream dolby truehd and dts-hdma you'll need a 1.3 hdmi cable
hdmi 1.4 adds an ethernet channel so that you don't need an ethernet cable as its run through the hdmi cable... however there is no hardware out that supports this yet so its useless

You don't need to use bitstream, it can be passed as PCM over any HDMI cable, with no loss in quality. In fact if you have a PS3 other than slim, you need to it that way anyway.
In any case, you shouldn't be spending $12 on an HDMI cable, 1.2 or 1.3 or whatever. Get a 1.3 cable from Monoprice for $2.50 USD (and up, depending on length). Anything more is a stupid waste of money.
