mix and match tires whether they be all seasons with winters or winters with summers or summers with a/s should not be recommended. go all one type or another, or park it.
is it safe? factors such as current weather condition will play a big role. With warmer temperatures, the snow tires will tend to be stickier than the all seasons, and wearing out faster as well. handling characteristics will be unpredictable at certain times. How's your friend's driving sense?

While I've always owned full winters, I've driven a mixed fwd setup in the snow. If you have common sense and a half-decent driving ability it's not a big deal. That being said; get the full setup.

it's stupid to drive with mixed sets. Your tires will wear out faster on the one set then another as well like !NiteRaven said because of the difference in tire compound handling characteristics will change.

no. I meant that snow tires with its softer compound will naturally be stickier in warmer temperatures compared to a harder compound A/S tire, which is not optimized for ANY season. As temps rise, the lifespan of the winters decreases if it is still used on the road.
what's the general consensus or common sense? softer compound = stickier? harder = last longer, trade off being handling. Don't believe me? drive in the summer with winters, see how well you can turn the corners and how long they last versus an A/S.
don't correct me on this matter, i deal with tires everyday.
