What does the tech job/internship landscape in Vancouver look like?
I'm transfering to SFU for my BSc in Comp. Sci and I'll be applying for co-op next fall. I'm wondering if anyone in the industry can tell me what kind of job/internship prospects are out there, and give me a jumpoff point to do some research.
TIA!

It was really good a few years back, but last 2 years it has taken a hit.
Nokia, SAP, HSBC, IBM, EA are hiring less

great, co-op is really important for getting your foot in the door. And you learn what really goes on in companies. good choice already
(btw, what are your interests? languages, area of speciality etc.)
vancouver, the tech landscape is alive. vision critical is big, hootsuite (got more VC funding), Fortinet, EA (bad rep though) and some other companies. Im sure internally at SFU there is some sort of job postings for co-op?
check craigslist

Have u looked internationally? San Fran / silicon valley would be ideal. for your network, and just the tech landscape is just so present there. I was sitting at the bus stop in Red Wood City, and overheard people discussing databases lol
Even Seattle has some opporunities. Amazon and Microsoft for one

Siemens is a good company to work for, I think they do co-op in Burnaby iirc. Also check out Sierra Wireless if you want to work with new tech, they do co-op terms as well.
Don't think of the big names, most of the times the companies that support the big companies are where you should be looking. You will get the best experience there.

Say if I wanna work in the states.. do I need someone to sponsor me or some shit? What about visas, I thought they're limited on giving those out?

I am no expert on visas (but i am looking into this as well) but heres a good start: Canadians in U.S.A. - Working in the U.S.
it looks like it is limited, so now the question is how they implement the priority queue
most of the people i know have had no trouble heading down to the states for work. so generally speaking, you should be alright as well less some outstanding circumstance

Forget major U.S. tech companies unless you're top of the class from an elite school or a very seasoned techie.
