Tokyo Taxi - of course when you have two amazing actors on screen things are very nicely done esp with their little gestures. Taxi drive was given a ride with an older lady. He was subbing for a friend so he had no idea it was such a long drive. Vaguely 60-100 km from Tokyo to Kanagawa (esp they had to go from teh woman's house to Kanagawa.
Truly a smooth 1.5 hr movie - a bit of flashbacks of the lady (80+) which was during and about the war. The flashbacks are legit, solid, actual issues and despite it was told by an old woman in a taxi, you feel for her in the stories.
Something about the movie just makes it so easy to watch, heart warming and you want to follow the character. Everyone can guess the ending, you KNOW it's coming so I can't spoil it but despite that, you jsut dn't want the movie to end.
Movie was filmed with green screen backgrounds of them in the taxi which is like duhhh... one give away was there ai'nt too much shadows from the sun which i guess AI / green screen can never give you.
Jacky Chan's newest movie.
过家家 | Unexpected Family - NOT a single kung fu move by Jacky Chan. He can barely run in the movie. It's truly a movie 100% about Alzheimer's Disease .
He is a father who has a son who has been training for 1995 weight lifting. That's the back story - he lives in his own place and has 3 friends, older female neighbor, friend who's a car wash owner and a girl that keeps sending / giving him herbal medicine. That's pretty much his environment.
Now in comes a kid who is a run away seeing "wages + free food and accommodations" and appears and the 'free' accommodations is at Jacky Chan's residence.
The kid now has to act as Jacky chan's son as his Alzheimer's Disease is acting up. Yes there are a bit of a gong show given so many loop holes - how does one just take care of someone, doesn't anyone work? etc.
Regardless, as the movie progresses, its gets worse and you can watch the end. There are a lot of emotional baggage at the end, it goes against China's mentality "i'm going to get my son to be a lawyer / doctor or else you're a disgrace etc". it was good to see the that being played out and the final scenes were just onions cutting everywhere.
A few of the supporting cast were super solid and helped the movie a bit.
It's a tear jerker movie to watch cause it hits home for many.
what a crappy movie. Marty Supreme had huge raves because of the acting and it was good. Timothée Chalamet did a great job, the portrayal must have been fun to play given the goody two-shoes role in Dune, this was a stretch role and you get to be an ass.
Now, what was crap was the story. Yes it's LOOSELY based on a character on Marty Reisman who was also a ping pong player. I'm a huge fan of ping pong so it was great to see them play, what I did not enjoy were two things - was this a movie about sports or about drama. You need to have a clear line between the two. Now, if it was sports related, it did ok. If this was drama of a life of a person, why would you want to write up a douchebag. Having stories about this life being a low life all the way just wasn't my thing. I just didn't like someone / movie playing a bad ass with a no consequence ending. Then we got Gwyneth Paltrow who played well along with Kevin O'Leary (husband and wife). The story line of how the three .. not so much.
Timothée Chalamet could have won many trophies - I kept having to remind myself it was him - Regarding his nomination, he was going to win UNTIL he made a comment on "no one cares about ballet or opera" which got him some huge bashing and most likely costed him.
Crime 101
This was a bit weird. It's very old school, gritty, basic movie, and it's tough to put either a good versus bad.
Director and writer was only 50 years so props to him doing a great job on it. I did not recognized any of his movies so I was a bit shocked how it all works.
There ain't no spoiler but I don't want to ruin it for you. The detective work by Mark Ruffalo was really meh, it's not his fault cause he only had a little bit to work with. However, he did a solid job esp on the end. Halle Berry, played herself and again, due to limitation of a not so developed character development. Then we also got Chris Hemsworth, who plays a bad guy and also very one dimensional. He can't hold a conversation at ALL, and if it wasn't his good looks, he wouldn't be able to date a girl. Hilarious.
Now the good part of this - the premise and the script was decent. You know what's going on and the final part of the movie, you KNOW it's coming. How it ends and wraps up was a bit of a good wrap up. The transformational ending on the last 10 mins was decent. It COULD have ended in so many ways however the director chose to extend it and wrap it out nicely which to me - saved the movie.
TL;DR - old school cop thriller, good wrap up but weak character setup. Chris H can't act for shit but that's cause his character is so dull.
重度催眠 - Deep Hypnosis (重度催眠, 2026)
THe actors are actually legit, the director does a really great job in filming slow mo, however when someone uses deep hypnosis to craft a story within a story and then within a story, it's so complex and maybe cause my mandarin sucked, but I did not like too too complex of a script.
I like what the director was trying to do, just was a bit of too much hypnosis going on - actually, i think every character had hypnosis ....
Project Hail Mary
DANGGGGGGGGGG what an amazing date movie. Baby sitter was soooo worth it.
Gravity + Intersteller legit space movie that really is a great start to 2026. Hollywood hates long boring movies, always has to add a villain and put in a love interest.
NOPE. Goes across all grains.
Many boring useless scene yet they help build such a great character development. Very complex (not intersteller deep) non linear movie that gets you involved.
It's captivating and then movie is 90% talking to an object and yet the sound track, the humor, the script all draws you in. 2.5 hr movie and it just WON'T end when you THINK it was going to end.
Director did a few great movies, 22 jump street, The Lego Movie, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse so they got a few VERY cool box office hit. Now what was great is the director, you're used to thinking it's only The Martian, but he also did Cloverfield, The Cabin in the Woods, World War Z as well.
I have to say, this movie is tough to beat. Top grossing film now in 2026 (well of course it won't beat spider man or Avengers); definitely worth watching in theatre. It's not crazy interstellear crazy with IMAX and DOlby but it's pretty close.
Thank you to the directors for not cheaping out on filming NO green screens, but legit real sets.
