This is why moderation is required on these forums. It's quite a dangerous place!
I tried to self-nominate to become mod but was not taken seriously and was denied. One can only try. If I were successful, I'd ban myself!

Anyone else having problems with searches on FB Marketplace? Not that the search was good in the first place. Coming up with 'no result' which I know there are ... like Oneplus phones, Golf R, Golf Alltrack, etc.

This year's Sun Run shirt is probably the best colour ever ... purple. Saw participants all over the city in the afternoon.

So I was in HK and since Canadians can now travel to China visa-free I went to visit guangdong province.
1. Shenzhen, yes it's the tech capital of China and lots of factories but means nothing to a tourist. Very boring, no unique culture as it's a relatively new city, everyone speaks mandarin only. Their biggest tourist attraction seems to be the skyscrapers lighting up at night that everyone spams on IG with that chinese rap song in the background. The only appeal seems to be eating at chain restaurants and shopping cheaper than HK and visiting Costco. I thought of it as bellingham for HKers.
2. Guangzhou, much more interesting. The four seasons hotel there is baller and cheap compared to other four seasons in the world. Apparently according to hotel staff there are still some remnants of cantonese but more speak mandarin now. Very, very good restaurants with some of the best dimsum/cantonese food I ever had. Much more touristy stuff to do with the canton fair but maybe I didnt do enough research but not as much as shanghai/beijing.
Other misc stuff:
I had wechat/alipay for foreigners setup before I went and it still shit the bed with payment failure randomly.
China highspeed rail very nice, your passport is your ticket.
I used my phones roaming so no firewall and and no need for a VPN.
Hated all the scooters/e-bikes speeding down pedestrian paths.
I went to a fancy restaurant in Guangzhou and there were these insufferable gen-Z that took a billion pictures posing around while ordering 1 measly dish. They even had a photographer that used his iphone as lighting. Why the restaurant didnt kick them out I dont know. Social media is a curse worldwide!

^ I have some Asian boomer friends who are seriously thinking of retiring in China as well. And these people have boatloads of money - lives at Vancouver House or posh Vancouver west side!

I went to China last October for the first time in over 10 years and it was sooooo different. Someone coming from the west and comparing the two, I can see why they'd like China more, depending on which city they went to of course.

Is it even possible to properly retire in China as a foreigner? I would imagine that:
1. The gov't doesn't make it easy for foreigners to settle permanently
2. One would have to exit and re-enter the country regularly?
I'm speculating and will admit that I don't know, but genuinely curious.

They looked into it, made a visit, and said healthcare (which is #1 concern for boomers) was fantastic compared to Canada healthcare. Food is good and inexpensive. They don't really care about politics BS, they just want steady affordable economy compared to high cost of living here in Vancouver. I dunno ... they are creating senior independent living villages with all the amenities. So way ahead of the game compared to Canada.
Just googled China Independent Living and got these:
https://www.watg.com/project/citic-c...ent-community/
https://www.sinooceangroup.com/en-us...iorliving.html
https://www.sinooceangroup.com/en-us...iorliving.html
Effin Peking duck every night ... might as well live the life/last years to the fullest!
One of the couples I alluded to is white guy married to shanghainese lady ... and they both think it's the cat's meow.

Late to the party but:
I will open FB, see an ad for X, the page self re loads a second or two later, i search the exact same item, and its gone.
Then i re search it by some other word, and i find it buried 40 items down, despite the listing being brand new.
So yes, its always problematic.
Even saved items that i have, if i literally search the title, sometimes it does not show, or is found way at the bottom past completely unrelated shit

Retiring in Vancouver is for the ultra rich only, even middle class should heavily consider moving elsewhere when they retire.
Why spend "60k/yr" for a good retirement, when you can spend equivalent 20k in many other countries. Or keep that same 60k spend, to live like the 1% in other countries.
Or go full boomer, and live permanently on a cruise ship, being in a different country every week for the rest of your life.

Are you said white guy who married Badhobz's cousin?
Joking aside, interesting and neat way of retiring. I'm a bit skeptical about retiring in China (this is my own personal opinion) but can understand why someone would contemplate the move.
Relatives of mine in China who are in their mid 50s have retired as per gov't policy and they live VERY well. Peking duck every night is pish posh to them. I seriously felt like poverty-spec when I visited in 2019, just before COVID (I probably introduced it to Canada.) I never want to go back to China ever again.
