Technician/Mechanic
What is the best route to take to become a manufacturer technician?
Preferably BMW.
finished highschool and a few terms of univ. but want to work in the auto sector.
what steps should i take to get into BMW STEP program.
eventually become a Master Technician (a high goal)
Also some information on salary would be appreciated
i have read that a lot of people start from the bottom, making near minimum wage, but i would like to know what one would make starting, 5,10 years into working for a bmw dealer.?
alot of the info gained from google seems to be outdated.
Dont really have any auto experience other than hours of reading on the internet.

Taking a course at BCIT is what i am doing. They used to have Euros but its cancelled. It gives you a good foundation to start from since you have little to no experience. Also gives 450hours towards your first year.
Most people will start as wash boys, or lube guys if your lucky ( this is speaking for the lower end dealers Toyota, honda,GM,ford etc) not sure if BMW works the same but i assume it would be.
If your a master tech, an average salary would be around $60k i think. Which also depends if your shop is flat rate or not and the amount of experience you have.
I have no clue about the STEP program so im no help there.

they have honda and GM too, maybe some others. the best way would probably to be to work at a BMW as a lot boy or lube guy. you'd probably have to start from the bottom. i did it (then quit and went to a small shop) and a guy i went to school with from bmw did it too. i'm pretty sure he only does oil changes too.
