I'm not too good at this sort of thing, so I'm asking for your guys help. I need help optimizing the network setup at my parents house, as well as need help with suggestions on purchasing a new router.

Here's how it's currently setup:

Shaw modem to Router 1 (DIR-615)
Router 1 connects to two computers via wire (work computer and media box for TV) and one wirelessly
Router 1 also runs a cable upstairs to Router 2 (DI-524)
Router 2 connects to two desktops (personal computers) and a server tower via wire

Now, Router 2 needs to be replaced because it's been acting up for the past couple years. My parents figured now is the best time to upgrade to a better router, as well as see if there's any better ways of how this is all setup.

They'd like a Gigabit router put in somewhere (I'm presuming where Router 1 currently sits), but I 1) don't know what router to look for, and, 2) want to verify that's correct. I'm quite a noob when it comes to this, so I'm not even sure what I should ask. lol. Anyway, if any of that makes sense, I'd appreciate some help. If not, feel free to ask me questions as to what is needed.

the DIR-615 isnt a gigabyte router, so if u use the DIR615 router for urself (two desktops (personal computers) and a server tower via wire), and connect that to a new gigabyte router, ur computer wont be communicating to ur parents computer at gigabyte speeds, but their computers (two computers via wire (work computer and media box for TV) and one wirelessly ) will be able to communicate at gigabyte speeds.

why use 2 routers tho?
and since u only have 4 computers that connects via wire, y not get a 4port+wireless router, run 2 lan cables to ur parents computer, then 2 lan cables to ur own computers. i suggest the D-Link DIR-655 router, its a bit more expensive but totally worth it.

^ You can use 2 routers and bridge them together, increasing range or your whole wifi field.

As for why two routers, it's not feasible to pull three cables from the first floor and across the house to the second floor. A single cable was easier (and at the time, was only intended to run one computer).

A second router/hub could be purchased for Gigabit, provided the first one is as well. Just not sure what i should be looking for.

Not really sure what you need help with.

If they want a complete Gigabit network, then get a Gigabit router (maybe D-Link DIR-655) and use it as Router 1.

But a Gigabit switch and put it where Router 2 is.

Done.

If they want to expand their wireless network, then get another Gigabit router and put that where Router 2 is.
