Motor/tranny import
Hey, here's the breakdown. My EM1's motor is getting tired and I've targeted a complete built motor swap setup motor/tranny and some misc. crap to have shipped up here from down south. I'm not concerned about shipping costs, but can anyone enlighten me with a quick explanation or web link to any info regarding the process of paperwork and costs of getting it through the border and into my lap?
The source i'll be buying from said he doesn't mind writing it down as a gift, or lower selling price on the paperwork to lower duties charges and whatnot, but i'm not entirely sure how the whole process works and what kinda $ numbers I'm looking at to get it across. Thanks in advance. Also, if this would be better off in another forum category, i don't mind if someone moves it! Thanks.

Paperwork to get a motor over the border? Didn't think there would be any?
I'm getting a motor in the spring and I plan on strapping it to the roof of the car? Or in the trunk, if they ask tell them it's a spare?

You import it like any other auto parts.. that means if the officier at the border doesn't like your attitude or become suspicious, he will ask you to verify the value of the motor.
The only hard part is if you need to ship it, you will need to put it on a pallet and deal with the paperwork at the border (or hire a brokerage to do it for you).

I won't be driving it across, it will be shipped. It's all wrapped up on a pallet ready to go. The border paperwork is what i'm curious about, and what kind of duties/charges I'd be looking at? I don't want to be blindsided by surprises.

PST + GST + 5% duty if not made in NFTA.. that's what the gov charges.. shipping companies charges more if you use their brokerage house and need a gate etc.
If the value doesn't make the officer happy.. they can drag you down to verify the amount, then you will be in for the "surprise".. ie they charge daily amount when you are on hold.

all parts/machining/labour have receipts but i won't be showing any border officers those :P it would be a disaster. I think i'll be claiming 3 grand though, seems reasonable, those guys won't know the difference. So in border charges it looks around $500, not too bad.
