I am able to skate, although not the greatest. I have been skating for almost half a year.

Do you have all the gear? Take a power skating course at 8 Rinks first and then consider an actual hockey class after that.

8 Rinks has both power skating and intro hockey courses for adults. It's pretty affordable if you ask me: http://www.icesports.com/burnaby8rinks/adult.aspx
Britannia also offers programs for adults... it costs a bit less but it's not as good. I didn't learn much, if anything, from their programs so I'm rather biased here.
