Back when A&E was good I used to watch him in re-runs of Columbo along with the original Fugitive show. He was kinda someone from my childhood in that sense.

He had Alzheimers for a great number of years
there's a lot of controversy surrounding his situation too something about his new Wife not allowing Colombos kids to see or visit him and something about her using Colombos state of mind to gain power of attorney etc
can't recall the details but if you're interested in him you may enjoy the reading
