Is the game only free till Sept 20, as in it will lock and be unplayable after that date if I install it?

there's no mention of a cutoff date on the learn with portals site that is linked from the steam page:
"Download a FREE copy of the original Portal for your PC or Mac here:" - this link takes you back to the same steam page to download the game.
