Self Clear courier(UPS/FEDEX etc.) packages?
Anyone on here ever self clear packages sent from US using UPS (or any courier)?
came across this
How to avoid broker fees. Just in time for online Xmas shopping. | The Art of Doing StuffThe Art of Doing Stuff
and figured since everyone here orders from the us and not always goes to pick up at the border, i could get some feedback (before i try).
Thanks in advance.

Yup just requires legwork, ask courier company not to clear customs for you, go to courier company (usually Miller Rd in Richmond) grab the paperwork, go to Canada Customs office up the street and present the paperwork, pay your taxes / duty and then take the completed paperwork back to the courier company and pick up your parcel.

Yes! Always clear your own to save money. It's not that much leg work. If you're fast and there are no line ups you can be done in a half hour. Sometimes, you don't even need to pay taxes at the customs office just as you would if you were to drive across the Canadian border.

Assuming you are going to pay the same taxes/customs that you would whether you clear it or the courier company clears it , with fedEx you're saving less than 11$ per package. Of course , if it's many single packages that are getting taxed/dutied on , it's worth it. But if it's just one and you think you have to go extremely out of your way to clear it yourself, ask if the 11$ is a big deal.
