Who do you give Red Pocket to?
Hey RS,
How do you guys do Red Pocket in your family?
I was under the impression that married couples give out red pocket to those who are not married and are a generation below you.
My buddy said his family gives red pocket to anyone who is younger than them even if they're married???
What do you guys do? Is there a standard?

I don't think there's a standard...
I'm married and we'll hand out red pockets to my kids, and nieces/nephews (both first and second).
Meanwhile my parents will hand out red pockets to the people I listed above, plus me + wife and my sister and her partner.
In the end I guess it depends on how generous you want to be...

korean here, we give money to the younger generation. usually in our family we do it on jan 1 tho not on the lunar new year. even at my age we still bow to our elders on this day but no longer receive money.

The whole not giving it to married couples in our family only applies if you're in the same age range. So to clarify the parents and grandmas would still give it to everyone regardless if they're married or not. However, my wife and I (40 for reference) would give it out to our cousins who are in their 30's but as soon as they get married we stop. At least that's how we've been doing it. In the end do whatever works.
Anyone giving less this year because shits so ballin now?

for family we got only 1 little shit to give it to
but every year the wife gives out a crap ton to our local chinese restaurants (kirin, chef tony, sun sui wah, etc). That way she gets VIP service all year round. I think she gives each waiter or waittress who says some new year mumbo jumbo 2-3 of these envelopes so its like 10-15 bucks each. The head waiter gets like 50 bucks and the kitchen people she just gives them a stack.
I took out 500 dollars in 5's every year

I remember going to CNY dinners in the past and if the person who wants to be bigshot at the table is handing out $5 envelopes to everyone, the waiters and bus people just stop at your table to clear 1 fuckin empty plate and pause until they get an envelope... it's just stupid and gross. Literally begging while on a job.

yeah you still gotta pay the tip at the end too.
But this ensures that when my wife enters the restaurant and half the fucking place greets her by her last name MRS HOBZ. They also proceeds to give us free XO sauce/free tea and the ability to reserve the restaurant even on big festival days like CNY, Winter solstice, etc etc
Want to book a wedding on winter solstice night like a dickbag at richmond Kirin? well the remaining 10 tables one of them is gonna be me and the wife (giving the wedding party massive side eye too)
