pardon my lack of knowledge on this situation, but been trying to find out if the entire city of sendai, aomori and fukushima is completely in ruins, or just the areas off the coast?
in these areas i believe the tsunami went almost 3km in and within that 3km its basically ruins as a lot of the buildings were extremely old. think one of the areas had 8,000 homes just over 5,000 are gone or severally damaged.

so HK News just did a story about MOX and kind of confirmed what the truther? was saying about how if there was a meltdown in #3 it would be far worse
just did a quick google looks like a lot of news sites picked it up
edit: oh some japanese experts held a press conference about it, wow so much happens each time i check in

A Japanese nuclear expert who spoke to foreign journalists on Monday offered a somewhat less optimistic perspective, pointing out that the kind of fuel used in one of the reactors where there has been an explosion already could add to the danger. As as CNET bloger named Tim Hornyak reported on Monday:
At a press conference in Tokyo, Masashi Goto, who worked for Toshiba as a reactor researcher and designer, said the mixed oxide (MOX) fuel used in unit 3 of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant contains plutonium, which is much more toxic than the fuel used in the other reactors.
MOX fuel is a mixture of uranium and plutonium reprocessed from spent uranium, and is sometimes involved in the disposal of weapons-grade plutonium.
Goto added that the MOX also has a lower melting point than the other fuels. The Fukushima facility began using MOX fuel last September, becoming the third plant in Japan to do so.
lots of info @ NYtimes about the situation in Japan in general not MOX related
#4 reactor fire causing radiation leak, immediate neighborhood has high levels of radiation.apparently everyone including workers being evacuated to the 20km and thinking of pushing to 30km. 50workers will stay and continue to try to pour seawater into the other reactors

I hope those 50 workers make it out okay - they're potentially sacrificing their lives for others. Heroes, they are.

hey quick question; i've been following the progress on the reactor for the last 3 days because as you guys know, I posted that I had family and friends in Japan. I haven't read all the pages of the thread, and I don't know what search terms to look for on google, and I've checked BBC/CNN for some definitive answer.
but... Did anyone come across any real information on what would happen to Tokyo should this thing meltdown?? My dad is an expat in China also and he's in Dalian, so does anyone know if this stuff could blow over eastwards? How much (if any) will Vancouver be affected by this? If anyone could clue me in, I'd appreciate it.
i misheard it, they arnt pushing it back to 30km zone they are telling everyone from 20km-30km to stay inside, close windows, turn off fans due to radiation

This link was posted earlier in the thread, and seems to have decent, level-headed info regarding the plants:

As for Unit 2, # of on-site workers has been reduced from 800 to 50, but injection of water is conitnuing.

PM Kan says, as for the residents within radius of 10 km of Daini power plant, most residents have been evacuated, but full evacu. needed.

PM Kan says, all the residents within the radius of 20 km need to evacuate ASAP. Those between 20 km and 30 km are requested to stay inside.

Mr. Edano says, nuclear fuel itself is not causing the fire for Unit 4. We are trying to extinguish fire ASAP.

here's a picture i just saw on reddit titled something like "cat survives tsunami", perhaps its wrong to be thinking about animals; im not, but i just thought this pic was good
The radiation levels are about 200-300 microsieverts, peaking at about 2000 yesterday morning. A quick check at Wikipedia shows that it takes 1 sievert of full body exposure for 1 hour to become nautious. So 300 microsieverts is 0.0003, a long way from what it takes to become nautious at full body exposure. 3000 is 0.003 sieverts.
Average background radiation we sit in just being on earth is about 2400 microsieverts per year (source). So if you were standing near the reactor right now, with no clothes on for 1 hour, it would be like being in your house for 1 month, in terms of radiation exposure.
3 sieverts = death in 50% cases, and 6 sieverts means you're gonna melt.
So while there is radiation outside the reactor, it's nothing to worry about right now.

02:39 NHK reports that the fire at the No. 4 reactor will carry the radiation up to 18 miles away. Anyone within 18 miles of the plant should brush themselves down thoroughly - hair, clothes, skin - before going inside. Once inside, wash thoroughly. Shut the windows and turn off air conditioning.

02:20 Yukio Edano, the chief cabinet secretary, says: "As of 10.22am, we are talking about radiation levels that can damage human health."
"The further you can get away from the plant, the safer it is."
Mr Edano said that the No. 4 reactor at the Fukushima Dai-ichi complex was currently on fire.
