They'll be re-routing traffic to another arterial bridge just to the east - you'll get through, but it'll be slow going.

Seriously doubt traffic is "backed up to the border" from this - that's some 50 miles.

Thanks

every weekend the border lineup will be a easy 1-2 hours wait. Add to that the collapse of the bridge, its just not worth the headache imho.

in regards to the newspaper, i am sure what they said is that the lineup was backed up from the us border building to the canadian border building at the peace arch or pacific highway. which is pretty common for every weekend and its even more of a backup for long weekends.

I just posted a picture of the Pattullo on my Twitter feed today... it opened in 1937 and handles almost as much traffic daily as the Skagit River bridge does...

KIRO had an interview with the driver of the vehicle that was right behind the oversize truck... said he told his wife he didn't think it was going to fit unless it moved to the left, and then another truck tried to pass, leaving the oversize no room to move over. Said they pretty much saw it coming and were slowing down already when it hit. The wife is one of the two in hospital still - stable condition, but possible head and internal injuries. The other driver was northbound on the other side of the bridge.

Patullo also has a lot more clearance for over-height loads - the Skagit River bridge is really pretty low:

Heard of Global this morning, that the oversized load was on it's way to Vancouver, WA from... Calgary AB

I haven't seen any pics of the truck with the oversized load, thought for sure there would be some floating around by now.

A Canadian trucker did it.

It's a conspiracy right CiC?

What if local BC businesses paid him to do it?

A truck should not of done that to the bridge it should of been way more stable then what it is. The scary part is just think what would happen to the bridges when a decent earthquake hits...

The bridge is supported almost entirely by that overhead structure, and like so many buildings and structures, it's all inter-connected and balanced like a Jenga. With the stresses balanced across everything, you don't even have to completely remove a piece, you just have to weaken it sufficiently, and gravity does the rest. In this case, all it probably took was for an angle joint to buckle, and the rest of the structure couldn't hold the weight. Remember that at that instant, it has several dozen tons of truck and trailer now being supported by that damaged truss - once it starts to go, even after the truck leaves, there's nothing going to stop it.

The three victims deserved it. America has committed far more war crimes with far worse casualties than these three people who drove in the bridge. Zionism and jews are the evil power

Bridge collapses happen in china all the time. Rich ppl don't take bridges. They take planes. I am rich. But not too rich. I will network with Chinese beurocrats and become more rich. Money means power. Power means no bridge.

I blame Christy Clark. She paid off the truck driver to make his payload overweight for the bridge ride in order to keep people in BC. -need those B.C. consumers to buy the more expensive groceries here to drive the economy.

She's a troll for the bridge.

I'm genuinely surprised there weren't more people in the water. That section of road is usually pretty damn busy, even outside of rush hour.

One of the victims is a UBC student:

?Please don?t let me die?: UBC student plunges into Skagit River following bridge collapse | Globalnews.ca

Quote:

“What do you say at that point? Please don’t let me die,” Bryce Kenning told a King reporter on Friday, one day after plunging nose-first in his car into the Skagit River.

Kenning, 20, who plays hockey at the University of British Columbia, was driving across the I-5 Skagit River Bridge on Thursday night when the bridge deck gave way under his car.

“The first thing I tried to do was get out of my driver’s side door, and it wouldn’t open,” he said. “At this point it was almost completely submerged in water. Second thing was the windshield, I tried to kick it out, but that was almost completely submerged in water as well.”

Kenning was able to climb out of the window on to the roof of his orange Subaru and waited for the rescue boats.

Watch: Investigators trying to determine cause of bridge collapse in Washington state.

“When I first hit the water it was a panic, you know?” he said. “Immediately you just want to get out.”

“I had so much adrenaline going at that point, the temperature didn’t even bother me, at first,” Kenning said. It was when he was waiting for 45 minutes for rescue that he began to feel the cold.

“I started shivering and shaking uncontrollably, that was pretty scary.”

He has some bumps and bruises and a possible concussion, but otherwise he is fine.

Three people went into the water that night, and all three were rescued and taken to hospital.

“Walking away from something like that with that little wrong with you is pretty miraculous,” he said.
