Best Hong Kong Style Cafes?

Being a richmonder , i just want feedback from different vancouverites on their rankings on hong kong style cafes in richmond. Where is your spot and dishes that you enjoy the most ?

any suggestions for top 3?

If the line ups are any indication, I'd say Lido is pretty epic. Pineapple bun and a slab of butter. Not strictly a HK style cafe since they serve up anything from noodle soups to clay pot rice, but they have all the regular breakfasts and bake rice meals.

You like? Yeah, you like.

Cattle Cafe has always been a decent choice for me.

Traum 01-19-2016 11:01 AM

Without a doubt, Lido is #1. Fresh out of the oven egg tarts and pineapple buns (w/ or w/o the slab of butter). Milk tea / coffee / milk tea-coffee mix. You really can't get more HK style cafe than that.

Another recent option is Loyal Cafe. Their food aren't the best tasting stuff around (but it isn't bad at all), but for some reason, the taste and smell of their food is exactly how the same food tastes and smells like in HK. That and their milk tea really packs a punch. Good stuff.

cattle cafe is bland and gross as well :/

Cattle Cafe is also closed permanently in Richmond.

bcrdukes 01-19-2016 01:07 PM

WTF Trinity is back!? :ahwow:

Lido: pineapple buns, egg tarts, satay beef instant noodle and milk tea
BT cafe: pretty good food menu
Mambo Cafe at Aberdeen: baked pork chop on rice

:D

Traum 01-19-2016 01:28 PM

Oh yes, I totally need a recommendation on some seriously good baked pork chop rice. There used to be a few places that served some very good stuff, but somehow, things just haven't been the same. :(

v_tec 01-19-2016 01:50 PM

The price Lido charge for their cold drinks is just ridiculous :fulloffuck:

dat_steve 01-19-2016 02:09 PM

Alleluia on westmin doesn't charge extra for cold drinks AND you get a free refill.

You still get the refill - but they charge you for cold drink now irrc.

Alleluia gets my pick for convenience and value. Baked porteguese chicken on Rice is legit.
I've heard good things about the Copa café across from the Richmond Oval but haven't had the chance to try it out for lunch yet.

I used to frequent Mambo at Aberdeen for Baked Pork Chop on Rice, but lately M cafe in Coquitlam on Barnet is so much better imo. Expensive though. I haven't tried it at enough places to say it's the best, but I pretty much only go to M Cafe for Baked Pork Chop unless someone tells me it's better elsewhere.

+1 Happy Date
+1 BT Cafe

Silver Tower is better than all those imo. It may look a bit shady inside, but it's the most consistent.

Alleluia is only good for the pick 2/3 menus - their other dishes aren't as good.

Kingspark is good too, but it doesn't open late. (pricey, though)

Gloucester used to be good until they switched a few chefs around.

Copa is overpriced as well.

BT Cafe is good, but doesn't look that great inside.

New Town Bakery FTW ... according to Alex Burrows.

The rest of Lido's menu isn't very good and it's overpriced. If I eat there I only get the items that you mentioned.

what's the new place at parker place, it has doors facing the outside and 1/2 of Lido's staff went over to work there.

they even have pineapple bun etc.

vyrospec 01-20-2016 09:52 PM

My picks:

Alleluia, Lido, Silver Tower, Rosebud, Kingspark and Mambo inside Aberdeen.

My experience with Copa was meh...

Has anyone tried Loyal Cafe?

guurl 01-20-2016 10:35 PM

Cafe Loyal on bridgeport is good

Mickz, if you haven't tried their traditional home style "old fire" (ie. slow cooked?) soup jugs, you gotta give them a try. Out of the 4 or 5 that they serve, there is one that I don't particularly like. But the rest are all superb. They include tons of ingredients in the soup jug, and the soup itself is fantastic.

I have no idea what the MSG content is in those soups -- I would not be surprised at all if they use some. But I don't get thirsty after having it.

But I agree with everyone here -- Lido is definitely on the pricey side.
