I know the other prof who teaches it is supposed to be better. I'm not looking forward to 417 too. The ratings on ratemyprofessor don't seem to be too good.

Mike Donat is very very lazy, and missed a few classes as well. Probably because he was too hung over to come to class hhaha

444 is crap
415+416+417 is money

and 310 back when i took it wasn't a piece of cake, and it's not just documentation. it was a good course as well.

I never took 444, so I can't comment on it (although I would've liked to fit it into my schedule), but yeah, 416 and 417 are very good electives to take. I found 415 to be a bit hard, so I didn't take it.

Donald Acton, who is the proff. for 416 in term 1, and the proff. for 415 in term 2, said the difficulty of the first assignment for 415 is the same level AND THEN SOME of the last assignment for 416. Go figure. But I've had friends take it that said it wasn't that hard if you enjoy programming and debuggin in C.

Yeah, well I wish I took 415 looking back since it would've enhanced my experience and knowledge with C.

i left cpsc after 3 years. i couldnt handle the insane programming projects every other week. cpsc310. seriously that course was hell. cpsc in ubc is an awesome community though. you really get to know most people in your year and it feels kinda like high school all over again. everyone is isolated in the icics section of the campus and just knows each other.

kudos to you guys if you manage to finish compsci with a co-op background. most friends i know went to telus/accenture.

Hows cpsc at UBC? I'm currently doing a similar program at BCIT. When you get your bachelors what kind of skills are you equipped with at the end? What kind of languages do you use?

I'm not entirely sure if I'm gonna pursue a bachelors at BCIT, if I do it's a pretty specialized bachelors either data comm or video games(which is why I did cmp sci in the first place. But I'd rather have a much more "rounded" bachelors. Don't really want to be limited to just video games.

ive been in it since 2008-09 i think. First language introduced was Java, then C++ and C. Took some electives and learned SQL as well.

Theyre revamping the CS program now so you dont learn Java off the bat. Rather you start off with Dr Racket ...or whatever.

I think you can become quite well rounded with the electives you choose to take.

Thanks for the info!

I'll most likely try and get into it either during the 2011 winter term or do it next fall. Doubt I'll just transfer straight from BCIT into UBC, need to get the diploma first I heard.

I've learned almost all those languages in my first 2 terms at BCIT. Now it's pretty much using the languages in actual application but learning C++ right now.

How are the assignments/projects there? Straight coding or are there papers to write too?

sorry late reply but, Assignments and projects vary per course. just off the top of my head:
cs310 (plugin development for eclipse) - you will have to write a simple outline in the beginning of the course. otherwise, the rest of the term is devoted to developing the plugin

along with cs430 and 444, those are the only writing courses i am aware of. if cs344 is anything like 444, it is also writing intensive as you have to document the ENTIRE user interface...bs course imo

other than the above courses, you wont really have to deal with writing.

For anyone seriously getting into CS... get your hands wet and dirty. the more experience the better. do a couple side projects and maintain them. itll look good on your portfolio plus its good interviewee material

Holy shit, super blast from the past!

LoL... as one of the originals in this thread from 2004, just thought I'd mention that I graduated with my B.Sc. in CS in November 2005... and since then, I've been a systems administrator. I never liked programming, so I didn't even try to become a developer.
