SRT-4 or GTI?

I am about to get my first car. I am going to mod it a little bit at a time. I really want an SRT-4 but I heard insurance is a bitch. If that isn't a good car for starters then I guess I'll get a GTI.

Which car is the best for a first car? (I am still going to be modding) WHY?

Hondaracer 11-26-2004 05:43 PM

if u are serious about modding/learning and tuning get the SRT, i've seen on honda-tech a guy was running 23 psi on stock internals pushing like 380hp.....

now i'm not suggesting u do that, but imo the srt 4 is more of a tuners car, and if i had the choice i would go with it.

dink 11-26-2004 08:37 PM

srt 4.. i would like to see more of these on the streets

HTownTurbo 11-27-2004 12:49 AM

I already did a quote from progressive and the SRT-4 insurance is $277.73/mo

Damn...my 350hp+ Eclipse GSX costs me around $80US/month for full coverage including $2 million US liability in Vancouver.

6-7 years in Canada

13 years total since I was 15;)

I pay around $1400 CAD or so each year to ICBC

Philly74 12-01-2004 06:02 PM

what year is your Eclipse?

Graeme S 12-01-2004 06:29 PM

He's got a '91.

european 12-02-2004 04:41 PM

both cars are nice. a guy i know bought a srt... pretty sweet! stock turbo... doesn't the GTI also have stock turbo?? i think it does.. i dunno.. they both really nice cars. my friend who bought the srt said they easy to work on and its a really nice smooth ride but he only says its easy to work on cause hes a mechanic. haha. i hope this gives you some kind of information thats usefull. :)

bluebomber85 12-06-2004 06:55 PM

Yeah, I know at least as an option a turbo is available on GTi's..

Adrenaline Rush 12-12-2004 03:53 PM

Considering your choices are both relatively quick for a first car, your best bet is to pick the car you want and go to a driver training course.

In the end you can get into trouble with any car so just make sure you learn the limits of the car in a controlled and safe environment first.

Adrenaline Rush 12-12-2004 03:56 PM

And don't forget - he's from Houston and they don't have government controlled insurance like we do with ICBC. A single, young, first time driver is big $$$ in the US for insurance.

VR6tornado 12-31-2004 02:23 AM

wait for the new mk5 GTI if u can. the 2.0L FSI Turbo will own and it's setup a lot better off the lot than the current GTI.

btw to clarify there's a 1.8Turbo and a 2.8L VR6 engine. both are good engines but the turbo is more of a tuner's as mentioned. the it's all about what ur looking for.. you're looking at 2 very different cars imho

civic101 01-05-2005 03:52 PM

the thing about the srt-4 is it will always be a neon. if you sell the gti a few years later. you still get some money back. a neon you may have to pay to sell it. if you sell it for less than your payments are.

aikawa 01-24-2005 11:14 PM

srt is bullshit. Dodge only made it to compete agaisnt subaru. Dodge didnt have any other production cars to compete with subaru so thats why they made it. I would get the sti over the srt.. my 2 cents

The VW GTI and the SRT are in a similar price range.

The STI is $20k Cdn more expensive than an SRT.

CEM 02-24-2005 03:51 PM

srt ALL THE WAY

WakeMeUp 03-01-2005 11:54 PM

SRT-4

It is dissapointing not to see more on the streets. There are only a handful of them in vancouver.

toyotaman 03-11-2005 10:11 PM

This SRT-4 will cost you an arm and a leg over the long run. Dodge has a horrible reputation for honoring their warranties, and the depreciation will kill you.

Other than that, it would be a great fun little car. Just don't keep it very long, if you care about saving your money.

Bull. I find VW is worse off with later generation vehicles.

Cman333 03-18-2005 01:00 PM

SRT-4 has some pretty bad torque steer

and LSD would be essential

DelphiR32 03-20-2005 08:08 PM

i thought it came stock with an lsd?
