imo, its very easy to become a sushi snob. once you eat some super fresh sushi, you just cannot go back to mediocre sushi.

There is a large range. Crappy, fast food, conveyor belt sushi can be had for $10/p, whereas 3 Michelin star sushi meal starts at $250/p.

In general, you can spend as much as you do here, but the quality and selection is significantly better.

For big helpings:
- Sushi King (8176 Granville Street)
- Banzai Sushi (8251 Westminster Highway)
- Sushi Town (5935 E. Hastings Street) gives you like 7 large pieces of Unagi on their Unagi Don, which is under 10$ I believe

Quality:
- Maruwa Sushi (Ironwood, 11300 Steveston Highway, beside Boston Pizza I think?)

I think everyone is missing the point that fish on rice has several locations..

The one on kingsway near crystal mall has bad service and is an overall piece of shit.

The one on broadway near granville next to joeys has good service and is overall good.

^yeah i can only comment on the kingsway one when i say the service was bad, but i doubt the food at the broadway one is any better..

also ebei? that place is terribad. service is just ridiculous. one time like 8 of us finished our meal and were just getting into our cars, and the manager chased us down and was like, we only billed you for 7, please pay for the 8th person. were like wtf, thats your fault. we added a few bucks to cover the extra, and the manager starts getting all mad about how we didnt factor in the right tip, hes basically yelling at us while were leaving. food sucked anyway.

Agreed! Actually, it's between Tim Horton's and Sleep Country, and across from Canadian Tire.

My requirements for a "good" Japanese restaurant:

-small
-Japanese owned & operated

When they turn you away because they're simply too busy, that's often a good sign. They get enough business from their regulars; don't need to be greedy and serve a few extra customers.

Was just going to say... AYCE and GOOD sushi do not belong in the same sentence. I understand that Tomokazu has above average AYCE sushi, Top Gun has great service, but neither of those have mind blowing sushi. I'd take Sushi California over those places any day of the week.

Question for Gumby and Kanachan - have you both been to Maruwa? I'm actually thinking of going there today for dinner to try this place out. I'm actually moreso curious whether they serve sockeye salmon or not? Thanks!

Thanks for the link!

I'm going to try it tonight regardless. I'll try to post pictures or do at least a review in the "Where did you eat last" thread.

Glad to hear that you enjoyed it.

Oh yeah, I wanted to add that Maruwa Sushi's menu isn't very large (i.e. small/limited selection). That may turn some people off.

Any chance you saw the uni sashimi? If it looks as fresh as the ones sushi hachi serves, then $13 is almost a steal.

Won't comment on the sushi, but their teriyaki (28$? can't remember the exact price) tastes about the same as a 10-15$ one.
