Doubtful... |
Detonating??? Are there any tell-tale signs to look for that would indicate detonation has occurred? I was running my car really hard up the Alberni hump with sustained periods of WOT and full boost when it started to make a strange metallic noise like I'd never heard before, (kind of like a rattling of small pebbles in a tin can). I had trouble determining where it was coming from but my son who was riding with me said it was definitely behind the footwell/firewall. I immediately backed off and just cruised for a bit and everything appeared normal, gauges all good, sounded fine etc. I tried a couple of short bursts of WOT and did not have a repeat of the noise. Car pulled strong and felt normal. When I got the car home I looked around under the hood, under the car and all seems intact. Maybe it's my tranny telling me something??? It has been making some noise, but only in reverse gear... so far. :( |
Check the plugs. It's possible that you were driving for a bit and everything got sort of heat soaked and caused it to get too hot. |
Mark, check the plugs out. If I recall correctly, I set your timing with a boost retard as well. It might be time for a spark plug change. Give me a shout at the shop. Cheers, Chris |
I'll look at them after work today and then call you. |
Plugs |
You need to go a heat range or 2 colder (3 threads of carbon is the rule I abide by) , but the plugs look half decent. |
We tried running a colder plug way back and the car ran like shit... Might have been with the old Perfect Power piggy-back now that I think about it. Hmmm. |
Mark, Are you still running the stock intake manifold / butterfly valves. Not sure if your car was under the recall the P5's had. On my 2003.5 the butterfly valves on the top intake runners close at about 4500rpm. For a period of time Mazda had them attached by screws (as opposed to being revitted), which of course worked loose over a period of time and would get sucked into the cylinders. Generally they are small enough to go out the exhaust valve, although with a turbo I do not know if this would be possible ..... Jay |
No loose screws here Jay! :D |
It's been a while but here's an update. Soon to be acquired... K-Sport Kontrol Pro Coil Overs http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...KontrolPro.jpg |
gross, the orange and yellow will clash so much!:p what are these replacing? |
Tokico HP's and Progress Coils |
Fancy! |
Mark, why k-sport...?! why not go for the mazdaspeed custom coilover(similar to koni yellow with CG coilover)? my friend had a set of k-sport before on his old civic and it blew in half year...:( |

Well I did some deeper digging for info on these and have changed my mind. Seems the struts are prone to failure. Sucks to have such limited aftermarket support... :( |
wicked thread man. I have k-sports on my jetta wagon. work AWESOME. i also got a smokin deal on them too. Ive had them for a year now. just had a look at them three days ago when i put the winters on..no leaks or anything. You'll like them. |

GC just makes a sleeve for my car which is ok but I would like to have a complete unit with pillow ball mounts and full f/r camber adjustability. Ray, I can't find the Mazdaspeed setup you are referring to. Any more info? |
for the mazdaspeed setup, u can only get it in here, https://www.mazdamotorsports.com/ you have to register to be member and u should be qualify for it (they need u to submit autox/road racing/drag result) for more information for the mazdaspeed coilover, u need to email them after u became a member because when i check on their website, they didn't show as much information about the coilover kit anymore... |
Thanks :) |
what are you gonna do with your old coil sleeves? i just got my hands on an MSP ;) |
Don't currently have coilovers. Just Tokico HP's (which you have on your MSP if I recall correctly) and Progress lowering coils. |
