I wasn't too happy with my previous moon photo, so I decided to try it again with some different settings.

I think this is the best that 300mm can produce.

1. Get the most powerful zoom you can get your hands on, for me, that's my $300 70-300mm lens
2. Shoot full manual
3. 100 ISO, (The moon is plenty bright)
4. Don't let your camera meter the shot, control the exposure yourself
5. Shoot Raw for maximum detail for editing
6. Don't shoot when the moon is near the horizon because you'll be shooting through a lot of air, which can add distortion, especially wavy air from convection currents, or pollution.
7. If possible go up high on a mountain on a clear night, wait till the moon is high above.

I didn't even use a tripod, the moon is bright enough on a night like tonight for handheld.

Not when you're using anything more than 400mm!

I didn't say, 'don't use a tripod'

But really? If you had a 400mm lens, you don't think you could handhold a shot of the moon?

I used ISO 400 for a shot @ 300mm @ f5.6, and 1/1000 a second and moon was exposed fine, no blur.

But yea, with those crazy epic telephotos, tripods a pretty much a must, because of the size and weight. I'm lazy with carrying around stuff anyway. Not to mention I can't afford those lenses..

Convert the image to B&W, and play with the colour channels, especially the green channel. Then you can get high contrast images.

The longest lens I have for the Hasselblad is a 350mm f5.6. I should try it tomorrow. I'd still get more magnification with the 500mm f4L on a 7D though I think even with the 50 megapixels of the Hasselblad.
