Found a few good songs. Mostly punk rock from me though.

Walkie Talkie Man by Steriogram
Would def recoment Silversun Pickups. Good song to start with is Lazy Eye.

edit: Also another great band to look into is Nightwish. They are supposed to be 'gothic metal,' but give them a listen. very unique sound and very heavy. And a female vocalist to top it off.

Explosions in the Sky - The Rescue is some really, really fantastic post rock. I think they've outdone themselves entirely. The entire album is free for download on their website.

yeah it was one of the better shows i've been to this year. i didn't think the shins would play that many off of oh inverted.

viva voce doesn't f*ck around. i actually contemplated seeing them last year, but didn't realize they had such a noise-rock sound. kinda wished i checked it out.

mako 02-25-2007 12:26 PM

i was pleasantly surprised by them ... HUGE sound for just two people. the drummer/singer/guitar/harmonica/etc. etc. guy is quite talented to say the least =D

mako 03-03-2007 11:42 AM

Tokyo Police Club

seems to be the hype band of the moment

bought their cd, Lesson in Crime

they got really short songs but they're all really good

SizzleChest 03-05-2007 08:44 AM

maybe i'm wrong, but shouldn't music get progressively better? today's "rock" music doesn't compare with rock from the 60s-90s.

How many of today's bands do you think will make the rock and roll hall of fame. IMO, zero.

that's kind of a close minded statement. is music getting worse? well there's always going to be shitty music in every decade. there are tons of great bands who started in early 2000. maybe you're just not listening to the right bands.

as for how many bands will make the rock and roll hall of fame? well it's kind of too early to tell. most of those band will have only been around 6 years? consideration into RnR Hall of fame is 25 years.

undoubtably, yes. i love rock, always have always will. but today's soup of the day bands make me sick. their careers will be dead in less than 10 years.

mako 03-07-2007 09:36 PM

music is so diluted these days ... with all the different genres and such. but there are a lot of good, fresh sounding bands out there. if you're into that kind of stuff. but sadly, most kids out there these days listen to crap.

merrymoocow 03-07-2007 10:02 PM

you mean crap without the c? i dont understand why people would listen to that kinda stuff. i mean its cool if music has good beats and all but lyrics about being all that and being "pimpin." just not my style.

once again, there will always be one hit wonders, hot band of the week, whatever you want to call it. the 80's and 90's had more than their fair share.

longevity is also a tricky way to judge a band. many bands, good or bad won't last 10 years (the police, rage against the machine, nirvana - yea i realize the first 2 are reforming). you can even argue that some of the 10+ years bands, should've hung it up a while ago (metallica).

if anything music is a lot more diverse now due to the fact that its easier to get a hold of music (ipods/downloading/mp3 etc) and you really don't have to stick to listening to the radio. either way, if you're limiting yourself to listening to stuff from the 60s-90s then your missing out on a lot of good music.

i've listened to some stuff by the new age rock bands - fall out boy, the killers, alexisonfire etc etc. it just doesn't do anything for me, at all. i just see (and hear) a total lack of talent in these bands and i question how they were given a contract.

i do believe however, that today's bands are judged by appearance and media hype just as much as their actual recordings. the big music companies have such a strangle hold on the listening audience without them even knowing it. they market their products so well. i almost consider it to be a mild form of brainwashing.

mako 03-08-2007 10:07 PM

there are many great bands out there, even many from Canada recently

the Dears, Arcade Fire, Stars ... there are bands out there that are trully talented

not to mention non-Canadian bands like the Shins who just played in Van recently and totally killed at the Commodore

mako 03-11-2007 11:15 PM

new additions to the V-Fest line up

Sun, May 20 Line-Up

SizzleChest 03-12-2007 02:11 PM

i'm going to add an asterisk to my above comment - there are a select few bands that i do like: velvet revolver and audioslave come to mind. notice though that both of those bands are reformed groups from previous decades.

mako 03-12-2007 03:30 PM

too bad Audioslave brokeup
