does this works only for HD channel and ATSC tuner?

and if I have an old tube TV it won't work? I just want to get CBC, CTV and Global
for local news

to get free hd

1)you have to have a tv with atsc tuner
2)best if clear view to mount seymour since all the tv sats are there

bumping this just for others to see
i recently got one mounted outdoors trying to see if it can pick up more OTA HD channels than my tiny indoor one (i think i can get 4-5). I just realized i've been pointing the wrong ways (i pointed south to US...then east trying to get any signals from back east.)

are there more in OTA HD channels in vancouver now since this thread started 5 years ago?

Have someone organize this, let's do a Group Buy lol..

mickz 04-23-2012 10:25 PM

I built one out of scrap parts I found at home. I used broken hockey stick shafts, coat hangers, screws, washers and scrap loomex cable. The only part I had to buy was the 75 ohm transformer.

I get 6 channels: 2-1, 8-1, 17-1, 26-1, 32-1 and 42-1.

rageguy 04-23-2012 10:40 PM

I have the above but also 6-1. There is also the 13-1, 2, 3 and 24-1,2,3. But those are useless channels anyway.

I get 14 channels with an indoor antenna in Vancouver. All of them are stable except 66.1 which I believe is broadcasting from Abbotsford. If I get a big outdoor antenna on a tower I believe I can pull in some USA network stations such as NBC, Fox, etc. from Seattle.

I get the following channels:

2.1 CBC Vancouver
6.1 Chek Victoria
8.1 Global Vancouver
10.1 CityTV Vancouver
12.1 KVOS Bellingham
12.2 Cool TV Bellingham (Music Video channel. This Channel is not available with Shaw or Bell)
17.1 CTV2 Vancouver
24.1 Shop NBC Bellingham
24.2 Estrella TV Bellingham (Spanish Channel, especially funny when Spanish Jerry Springer is on LOL. Channel is not available on Shaw or Bell)
24.3 Shop NBC Bellingham
26.1 CBC French Vancouver
32.1 CTV Vancouver
42.1 Omni Vancouver
66.1 Joy TV Abbotsford ?

^ Ah yes. I made some typos. I have what you have exactly, minus 66. I am using an indoor antenna too. It points to the mountains, but since this is an indoor antenna, I have lots of walls blocking. It still works though! http://www.amazon.ca/Terk-HDTVA-Amplified-High-Definition-Reception/dp/B0007MXZB2

dollar store antenna works too, just not great. the HD channels you get are beautiful.

MTV Cribs 04-24-2012 10:26 AM

When you get the dollar store antenna, you have to remember the long stick part (VHF) is not in use anymore. Only the part that looks like a circle is in use.

I didn't realize we still get OTA channels. I thought they all went away when the analog signal was shut off. Not counting the ones from the states

Tried the OTA thing. Barely got CBC HD and nothing else in Port Moody. Spent about $30 in materials building various antennas and then I found out that Shaw basic HD is free if you're a regular analog subscriber, just need an HD box. Bought a used HD receiver for $50 and am now enjoying HD goodness without any trouble.

The analog signal is shut off and replaced by digital signal. To see the digital signal, you need a new tv with a built in atsc tuner or need to buy a stand alone atsc tuner box for the older tv.

are the outdoor antennas weather dependent? I remember when i used to have bell satellite when the dish was covered by the snow i would lose signal lol

JesseBlue 04-24-2012 04:24 PM

i havent had cable for years and i built one from aluminum welding rods $0.36/ea, pvc pipes $2-3.00/ea some t/elbow connectors $1/ea..screws and time..so under $15 bucks i have a decent M4 type...

you lost signal coz the lnbs are blocked...sometimes its weather dependent but that would be because the signal was weak to begin with
