Just go to the store/s?

Meowjin 11-06-2006 12:43 AM

Seriously, If you go to leos they will talk you into a 700 dollar system for just the lights, and then you will need portable power if you want to shoot outdoors.

The alienbees set is not only cheap, its reliable and for 700 you can get it with a portal battery kit.

ramir 11-06-2006 12:43 AM

ok then, just trying to see if i can get some help from you guys coz some of you might have a better idea than me.

i just don't want to go into the store without any idea...

i did look at kerrisdale also but i guess since you mentioned that atleast 800 watts is needed i don't think the one i was planning to buy would have that wattage coz it was a cheap one... lol

Well, the idea of going into the store is to ask the salesguy questions. You're under no obligation to buy from them. I agree that Alienbee makes good, cheap products, but are they as durable as a Hensel set-up? I don't think so. In an indoor studio setting, Alienbees would probably be fine, but out in the field, I doubt they'd last as long as Hensels. Your call though.

www.harookz.com (site seems to be down) uses it for his biking setups... says it holds well.

ramir 11-06-2006 12:54 AM

i'm just going to be using this for indoor guys, so basically i just need a basic one to start out with i guess...

but something that i can adjust the settings (if that's how you would call it) for how bright the light will be.

Senna4ever 11-06-2006 01:00 AM

Then maybe the one at Kerrisdale is good enough for you....or if you can wait, get the Alienbees.

ramir 11-06-2006 01:09 AM

how much are the alienbees one? care to give me the link the specific one that might be ideal to start one out with that could last me for a while also

ramir 11-06-2006 01:38 PM

yeah i'm getting the alienbees, freaking the lights at leo's are too expensive.

Meowjin 11-06-2006 05:00 PM

http://www.alienbees.com/beginner.html

call them and see if they will deliver usps.

ramir 11-06-2006 09:14 PM

yeah i'm getting express delivery for the one day delivery... coz apparently its much cheaper compared to paying for regular shipping then paying again for disbursment fee...

now since its cheaper i don;t know which lights to get, i guess i should get the highest one eh?

Meowjin 11-07-2006 12:49 AM

Don't deal with UPS... they will come to your door asking for 500 dollars.

the one I linked with the b800. and a vagabond package if you plan on shooting outdoors. Also a reflector and a stand would be good too.

how can i get it sent then? doesn't alienbees use UPS for sending their stuff?

Meowjin 11-07-2006 12:54 AM

they do, but call them and see if they will ship USPS (united states postal service) explain to them ups will fuck us over at the border.

ramir 11-07-2006 12:55 AM

Stop talking out of your ass.

If they ship UPS ground, then UPS wil charge insane brokerage fees. If he gets next day air like he's talking about (or anything that ISN'T ground.. IE express, next day, etc), then there will be no brokerage fee charges and he will be responsible for GST, PST and any applicable duties (of which I believe there are none) just like with USPS.

ramir 11-07-2006 02:40 AM

yup that's what the lady said, i don't have to pay for brokerage fee if i do the express one and the express only costs $38.32 USD for shipping one light
then i will just have to pay for the tax here in bc which is 13%

those are the only additional cost

Does this apply to USPS as well as in USPS ground will charge the brokerage fees too?

ramir 11-07-2006 08:46 AM

i think if its regular shipment they will charge brokerage fee...

but if you do it express they don't charge brokerage fee...

i just ordered the beginner bee and i got charged $67.57 USD for shipping express next day delivery

no brokerage fee

lowside67 11-07-2006 09:26 AM

the problem with the beginner bee setup is it's limited to a studio...

ramir 11-07-2006 09:31 AM

well i am just starting with using studio lights so yeah

lowside67 11-07-2006 11:14 AM

yeah ive been looking for a portable 2-head solution.

seems prices start at like $1200-$1300 :(

ramir 11-07-2006 11:25 AM

yup for the good ones they start at that price range... but yeah i think i would suggest alienbees also... price is pretty reasonable and accesories also are pretty good.

will give a feedback on it once i get it and test it

dspirit79 11-07-2006 11:27 AM

Hmmm... I haven't checked this thread in a long time.

Just an FYI, you don't need to be super elaborate on your lights unless you are doing something special.

For the most part 500W lights are PLENTY for most people. Alien bees are good starter kits. There are ways to make the system portable for relatively cheap.

There are some pretty decent beginners kits to be found on Ebay.

You can create great photos with just about any lighting kit, you just have to know how to use it and it's limitations.
