贖夢 - Peg O my heart
Yes it's a canto film, yes it sucks, yes it's directed and co-written by Nick Cheung which was the reason why I watched it.
No idea why this was funded and turns out it was funded by Hong Kong Film Development Fund (cause really, no movies are making money at all).
Cast was solid, and of course since Nick is BFF with Andy Lau he did a few cameos and it didn't do any justice. Script was week despite it was an experience from Nick when he was a cadet but what failed apart was the entire first 40 mins on dreams and trying to be all scary. Then came the main character's wife which also nothign were developed.
Nick as directored wanted it to be filmed a bit differently, not all black and white but definitely has a grey-ish undertone. Which, was meh. Then Nick as directed tried to go the scary route and threw in some cheap thrills which did not work. You can't try to do the Ring and then try to do weird shit flying from a corpse mouth and then do some scary ghost chasing after you type stunt.
Only saving grace of the movie was not even the supporting cast whom were also great stars. The ending was the only part that revealed the true story which was a short 10 min scene. Too bad. If only they developed the tragic story & the 2 sub plots eg// pulled on those stock market line / theme, it woudl have been much better.
This is the reason why it's a love hate abotu Canto films.

Someone posted on here so this was on my radar. I don't know how to place this movie. One point moves fast but at the expense of poor character development.
Then you got a few big names (minus Kevin Bacon LOL) and Elijah Wood who looked more like the penguin.
I did like the fact it was gore blood galore then it pivots into a very gentle Toxic Avenger i guess trying to define his 'powers'. Everything passed by so fast that it didn't really get a chance to absorb the story. We got a dark Gotham City backdrop with a few different Joker type cast which I thought played well into the environment. The NPC all synced together but somehow something didn't create a dark Gotham vibe.
I didn't mind the blood shed if only the story or character was done properly. Peter Dinklage did a decent job playing a single step dad which didn't give him enough time to set the stage as 80% of the movie he has a mask.
Is it over the top, I didn't mind cause the stage was set. People thought it was a cult but I didn't think of it that way. Easter egg was meh. You throw in a few woke characters and some poor acting from Kevin Bacon, you got a decent movie with an ok script.
It's refreshing and better than a lot of movies so I can't complain.

Solvent is an English-language Austrian horror film - it's unique where it's Directed and acted and produced by the same guy; it fits well esp you throw in some German and the back drop on Nazis.
If your'e too young to remember, The Blair Witch Project 1999 was one of the few film who pioneered the POV. It was a great horror film (due to ending) - but people puked and it was really a bad experience people with dizziness. I was the in theatre and thankfully I sat at the back.
This movie did well setting up on why it needed POV - Company got hired after COVID to go back to grandpa's house who passed away and now trying to uncover some hidden documents. The characters setup and POV filming technique (was throughout entire movie so you have to be ready) was good.
Only part about this horror movie which pivoted was the horror part. It's not a in your face clown type thriller, but more of a transformational of the mind / hallucination. I really had hope on how it setup. One scientist had a discovery and then she goes crazy. That part was joyful and full of suspense. What the director did after was poorly done. He would go do stupid things; drinking unidentified liquid (no spoilers) and just kept doing some weird 'stuff', a lot was related mutilating his gentiles which was totally not necessary to be shown 5+ times even if it was sort of related to the theme of the movie and why it was happening.
Stories ends a bit but it because a bit more supernatural border line which i lost interest. The POV view wasn't the best but it wasn't the worse. A decent genre but I didn't think it was worthy of a movie.
If only they push less on the hallucinations / eposides and more on the story, ti woudl have been epic.

What a great movie with an awesome script while pulling on tension of a real threat, but there's a caveat. it's only for 19 mins.
Kathryn Bigelow was X wife of James Cameron for a short 3 years and she was famous going head to head winning The Hurt Locker and then Zero Dark Thirty. Now I'm going to give props to Noah Oppenheim who did the scripts (Jackie, Maze Runner and Allegiant).
Now, it was a great threat which you get 4 stories within one movie. Threat of a bomb flying over US (HENCE US wanted us for GOLDEN DOME) and this is where you see 4 perspectives at 4 DIFFERENT times repeated over and over again.
Now because it's so intense the first time, you're on the edge of your seat. How will you react. How will you tell family (but you're locked inside a gov't with your cell phone locked). It's great story telling at finest. This is also the ONLY genre Kathryn (director) is able to do.
From crisis center, to FEMA, to advisor, to secretary to president.. you see all their perspectives.
No spoiler alert at all but once something is done 4 times, it loses its edge.
Everyone did a decent job; from Rebecca Ferguson (famous for Mission Impossible - Ilsa Faust) then you got Idris Elba as president and then a guy who played really well as Secretary of Defense Reid Baker ...everyone was superb. Seeing something from oh it's s meh threat.. to oh it's worthy to dang it's very serious.... was really intense sitting at your seat.
Well worth the watch. Don't want to ruin anything - just appreciate the tension and hopefully it covers the shortfalls.
