hey Turbo Drifter. who's your local Vipec guy? I'm looking for a Vipec installer and tuner locally so i don't have to head down to Alberta.

Here we've run HKS vpro on all but two cars built. Those two cars used a megasquirt with wasted spark system and the other was microtech lt8 with direct ignition (individual coils with no ignitor)
The biggest issue with the megasquirt and microtech was aux inputs and outputs as well the earlier ones dont have a wideband feedback option. they have since changed that and it can be special orderd.
Megasquirt also has the slowest processing speed from what I remember thusly needs to run richer to prevent detonation.

Phil@rise 03-05-2010 02:18 PM

that was me posting above Cman333 is not wise in the ways of fuel manegment.

I've tuned multiple cars with MS v2.2 and v3 and haven't noticed anything relating to having to run a rich A/F based on MS's processing speed...

I've never ran a v3

Just wondering how many of you guys are running a full standalone engine management system whether it's Hondata K-Pro, Megasquirt, Haltech, Autronic, MoTeC, Chrome, Uberdata etc.

If you do, please list what you're running, motor specs, and whether it's been tuned or not, and whether you're satisfied with your existing EMS or not. I'm looking for some opinions on different EMS' for my MR2. :)

I accept with information: running the Apexi PowerFC on a FD Rx7 with big streetport,HKS T51R turbo,1600cc secondaries & 850cc primaries.Ground Zero Motorsports in Oregon did the tuning and it's flawless.

man this is a great forum, so much knowledge and a sence of maturity. I dont know why I dont spend more time here.

Anyways, Although I feel this is a noobie question, and it may have been covered a million times, I figured I would give it a go anyway.

So I may be/probably am wrong in places here and would like some correction.

What I am guessing is that all cars will have OEM chip in the ECU. Are all these chips removable so that you can put in an aftermarket tuned one? Is socketing somthing that you have to do to a ECU without a removable chip to get it to take an aftermarket chip? Is a socketed ECU a ECU with the ability to use an emulator? Does a Emulator connect to a port on the ECU or is it like a chip that plugs into the ECU?

I have a good general idea of how it all works but not how things actually plug into the car and ECU.

Like lets say we had a:

F-150
S2000
M3
Supra

if we wanted to do minor tunes on these vehicles, is it essencially the same process for all or do they each have a specific way that you must take to give it a tune? Is it just as simple as take the OEM chip out, throw in a new one?

Anyways, sorry for the shit-ton of questions.

Also I had no idea that there was soooo many standalones out there, wow, I would have been able to come up with like 2, howcome AEM isnt a big one? I thought that there electrical products were really good?

I run and AEM EMS in my Talon and like it, car just went 9.8's @ 151Mph on E85, no nitrous, and controlling 2 1600cc Inj per cylinder.

I'm probably going to be running a Vipec later this year because of its 'on the fly' tuning capability. Its high end.

Not sure of the price difference between the Viper and VPro....but dayyym the VPro is hot shit....it tunes it self after the base tune as well according to your driving......I miss my VPro :(

Captain Bondo 11-02-2010 01:22 PM

Vipec is awesome but don't buy a management system because it has "autotune". Such features are 99% gimmick.

Vpro is fine but you need to be a dealer to tune it, so if you plan on tuning yourself skip it. Otherwise it's good.

Tuning the fuel map is the easiest and fastest part of tuning a car, especially on a load holding dyno like a mustang or dynapack.

Aside from the actual tuning, any decent system will run closed loop based on feedback from the 02 while you drive, to make basic corrections under normal driving. A $150 megasquirt 1 will do that.

If you plan to tune the car yourself, download the various tuning softwares and see what feels more intuitive. Pretty much any system can be tuned to make a car run well but you need to know the software.

If you are planning on using a tuner, use what the tuner is comfortable with.

Ensure the system has enough inputs outputs to do what you need it to do.

As a small update on my end, i just replaced my megasquirt with a VEMS and it is fantastic. :)

It started as that in about 2006 but is unrelated in its current form.

I have had good success with microtech units, curently im running the lt-12 system

fareastmike 02-10-2011 11:03 PM

I run AEM ems on my 91 talon ,currently 500 hp at 26 psi and meth, at the crank.

AEM ftw:woot2:

Microtech FTW

I am running a v44 Vi-Pec.

It was easy to tune and the 5D mapping is great becuase I can have my meth signal trigger different fuel and timing maps (which I am doing). I have stock turbo, stock injectors, stock IC on my 93 WRX and 234whp @ 195kpa. I've done a little work on it since then but I probably only have a few extra hp.

Runs really well and its the best money I've spent on my machine.

I started this post as an info on my ECU install/experience, but thought I would include some basic information on my setup as well for the other JDM owners in Vancouver wherever you may be. I included my Vi-Pec Review in this post incase you are interested :- )

Car: 1993 JDM WRX (Nov. 1992 production) apparently closed deck due to block cross-hatching and serial number crosschecks. (pics at bottom of page)

Modifications:

DIY Custom intake
Rocket Rally downpipe "catless"
Apexi N-1 Catback "catless"
Aquamist HFS-5
Greddy PROFEC B Spec II Boost control (soon to be replaced by Vi-Pec boost control)
Vi-Pec V44 Standalone ECU (worth it)

DIY strutt bar
Whiteline front and rear sway bars
Speedline Rims
BFG G-FORCE TA tires
Beet up sparco seet for autocross

and...

PRODUCT: VI-PEC V44 STANDALONE - Wire In
www.vi-pec.com

CAR: 1993 JDM WRX
http://i413.photobucket.com/albums/p...R/IMG_0413.jpg

First things first. I got the wire in model of the V44 Vi-Pec rather than the plug and play because I wanted to be able to easily switch vehicles with the ECU should I want to in the future. There is a Plug and Play available for the JDM WRX. I will document here a few of my experiences with the Vi-Pec now that it has been installed and running for two months in my car and let you know how I've liked it.

1. Install
The install went very well thanks to the help of Cam and his team at Lightspeed Innovations in Red Deer. It would take a good solid day to install this wire in ECU if you are taking the time to do a good job with heat shrink etc... I chose to do just this and it took me roughly 12 hours of work time. It could be done in less. Of course it would have been much easier with a plug and play obviously. Thanks a lot Lightspeed!

2. Startup
After calibrating the MAP, initial startup was great. It actually started! Unsure of the tune on my car I left the car for the night and moved on to the dyno.

3. Dyno Tuning
This is where some of the reasons I bought the Vi-Pec began to come into play. Unlike the Power FC, I didn't need Datalogit for a laptop or to work from a tiny screen. I tuned it using MAP not MAF, one of the big advantages of the Vi-Pec over PFC or ESL. I just plugged it in to a laptop that was lent to me for a while (thanks a lot Anthony). I was able to easily access and understand all parameters of the software I needed to get a solid (hopefully) base tune done up to 15psi. I used the Turbo XS knockbox to listen for knock and began working on my first tune ever :- ) I used the 4D fuel and ignition mapping for tuning for my W/M. Many hours later of flogging my poor car and various adventures (noob) put me on the road finally with my new standalone. My car put down 234whp on a Dynapack AWD dyno in Red Deer AB with a nice smooth powerband I think. In comparison, a stock 2010 Sti puts down 230-235awhp on the same dyno. I'm running stock Turbo, stock top mount, stock injectors, and at 195kpa. Not bad :- )

4. Performance
The best I can give for outright performance is that the Butt Dyno says its fast :- ) It comes on boost way harder, thanks to timing advance during spool up and a little leaning of the fuel with the water meth, I spent extra time in this area on my tune. It pulls way harder than before right up to red-line. The motor runs much smoother now as well. Even my brother mentioned how much smoother it runs when pushing it hard with zero hesitation, and he's not a car guy.

5. Future ECU/Engine related mods:
-Set up the Launch control.
-Possibly setting up anti-lag but I allready blew one exhaust gasket messing around with it.
-Closed loop narrowband oxygen control for better city mpg and closed loop wideband control for WOT.
-Newer WRX intercooler. I'll only need to modify the y-pipe and not the BOV location! I love MAP :-)

6. Satisfaction with the product.
- 9.5/10 I give it this only because I wish it had the individual cylinder knock control like the V88 Vi-Pec. I am very satisfied with its ease of use, operation, and value.
