A word of caution to anyone filling up at the pr shell. Go inside to pay or be wary of the pump if you're paying by credit.
Someone, somehow has gotten a copy of my visa and the only place I've swiped at is the shell pump. My card was used a couple times in Washington while I was at the spring meet.

Picked up new coilovers for my car recently at point roberts, got taxed $150 bucks :( unlucky, i guess it really does depend on the person you get

Geoc 03-28-2013 10:40 PM

I think bringing 1000+ worth of stuff across the border is a little hard to get by

Not true. It all depends on who you get. I brought back coilovers with no tax or duty.

He said it's hard to get by....

Just because you did it, doesn't mean everyone is going to get through.

Though the the higher amount you bring back does increase your odds of getting taxed.

I'd count yourself lucky.

My car requires premium.
I fill up 91 at Chevron stations in Canada, and my car runs fine.

I noticed when I fill up 92 at Chevron in Point Roberts, I always get more pinging.

Anyone else notice this?

Probably the ethanol content in the gas.

WA state requires all grades of gas to contain up to 10% ethanol. Premium gas in Canada is mostly ethanol free. (check the labels at the pump to be sure) That might be the cause.

You are absolutely right I used to get check engine lights from us premium gas and it would go away after I fill up with local gas.

I agree. My fresh card was used only in a handful of places, PR Shell being one of them, before my card was cloned.

I'm thinking the same thing happened to me at the Can-Am in Point Roberts. :suspicious:

I went to PR today with an almost empty tank but didn't fill up any gas. I filled up at Chevron in Vancouver instead. Am I crazy? I really do think Canadian gas is better.

For premium gas (91 octane), sure. For regular 87 octane (and probably 89 as well), Vancouver gas also contains ethanol so in that regard it won't make a difference. I'm pretty sure Mohawk gas has ethanol across all grades which is probably why they're a little cheaper than everywhere else.

I usually fill up in Blaine with their premium gas (since my car says it should be using premium). It's hard to argue the almost 30c/L price difference though. I haven't had any problems with pinging with my car.

However, I'm pretty sure that the octane level is independent of whether there's ethanol in the gas so the presence of ethanol in theory shouldn't be the cause of the pinging. It's more likely from lower octane gasoline.

TSB today
Picked up package, filled up gas, bought a 6-pack of beer, no tax, no problems. :fullofwin:

what day and time is best to go?

Traum 04-19-2013 01:00 PM

I know this is a thread for shipping stuff to Point Roberts. But what about shipping from Point Roberts?

I'm looking to ship some stuff to the States, and it is significantly cheaper to do so if I were to send them from the US (ie. Point Roberts) instead of sending it out from Vancouver.

Would someone please share their experience in this matter? What kind of questions will the US border officer ask when I tell him I'm sending something to a US buyer? (This is going to be a private sale, not a commercial one.) Will they charge any taxes or duties for the thing I'm trying to ship?

Any insights will be appreciated.

roastpuff 04-19-2013 01:56 PM

^Usually they charge $10 as a duty when crossing the border, though I have heard people can say something to get themselves exempted?

gars 04-19-2013 02:00 PM

it'll depend a lot on what you're sending as well... any items made in North America are duty free.
