Good Place to buy knives

I'm starting a cooking class soon and what's a good brand of knives to buy at a reason price and where can I buy them? Thanks.

House of Knives? I really dunno. Maybe talk to other students in your program, or the teachers?

Senna4ever 09-16-2008 08:02 AM

What kind of knives do you want to buy? You can go to House of Knives, as they have both Henckels and Wustof brands. These are the two big German brands, the main difference between the two are: Wustof steel is slightly harder than Henckel steel, so it is a little bit more difficult to sharpen, but it will keep its edge longer than Henckel. I found Henckel way too soft, but that was in a busy restaurant setting.

Ming Wo
House of Knives
winners..

well are you looking for quality or quantity? if quality, go to house of knives and get the german brands. otherwise just go to like some supermarket and get some cheap ones.

Senna4ever 09-16-2008 12:24 PM

I've never used a Shun.

For the price of shun, buy hattori. Since I like whoring up my site, take a look at this:

thanks for the info.. it was very helpful..

Honestly i like shun, i have my own set and it works wonders. But the best thing to do if you going to buy the knives is to go try them out... actually hold them and handle it a bit because the handles will feel different and you may not like using certain ones.

Thanks for all the info!! Very helpful! The new House of Knives store which opened on Granville Street told me that they offer 20% off for anyone who's taking a professional culinary course or is in the restaurant business. They call it an Industry Discount. However, my course is just a hobby/night class so it didn't count. :(

godwin 09-21-2008 02:32 PM

Cook Shop in City Square is having a sale.

godwin 09-21-2008 02:33 PM

AFAIK they are always "on sale".

house of knives is extremely overpriced

fille 09-26-2008 07:50 PM

costco sells a whole set of wusthof (my favourite brand) for $299
better than buying the chef's knife alone at house of knives for $199

Senna4ever 09-27-2008 01:10 AM

I think the knife set at Costco is Heckels.

fille 09-27-2008 03:11 PM

oh you're right completely forgot!
but at least it's the better of the two of the henkels
one has two men and one has one man
the one with the double men is the better quality line if i'm not mistaken.
canadian tire sells the low quality and they're horrible.

Manic! 09-27-2008 09:09 PM

Costco does sell wusthof
http://www.costco.ca/Browse/Product....=1&topnav=&s=1

I think the henkels they sell is the one man kind.

Shun is like global but at 1/7th the price.

Global is fucking awesome

Senna4ever 09-28-2008 10:27 PM

I wouldn't use Global in a restaurant setting though.
