If it was done in a way to play up on a particular subject's stereotype (whether it's a nerd, redneck or fob approach, it's all technically the same), yet keep it in a relatively tasteful way, then no harm no foul. If a stereotype was used solely to incite hatred or distaste, and perpetuate a negative image then, sure, it shouldn't be done.

Think of it this way...
Anyone who listens to the beat hear that radio commercial for IKEA mocking sleep country? where the guy says something along the lines of "IKEA sells mattresses? but I thought the woman told me not to buy a mattress anywhere else!"
and then Sleep Country decides to release a commercial where a guy with a swedish accent describes their own mattress...
mock wars back and forth, in the same market...
In this context, think of CVC as IKEA, and CSA/CSU/DSC as sleep country, just that they haven't retorted or responded yet.. and the market? well.. chinese people!! haha
BTW i saw the video couple weeks back it was hilarious made me want to join CVC but no i will not.

CVC is still pretty popular. I went to their booth yesterday in the courtyard (amongst CSA/KISS/JAPANESE CLUB)and i was surprised that they were the only one with a lineup.

Whether it was satire or not, I think it still speaks to the deeper, underlying issues of Chinese racial identity.
I find that a lot of CBC's have some sort of racial inferiority complex. The whiter you act, the better. They sell out their own race.
Maybe it's from all the racist taunting they received when they were young. White kids making fun of them going "ching chong ching chong ching." Or all the negative stereotypes they see on TV about Chinese people that make them ashamed of being Chinese deep down inside.
Of course, most CBC's won't actually say that they are ashamed of being Chinese. But a lot of them are ashamed on some unconscious level. It comes out in their behaviour when they try to separate themselves from the FOBS and say, "Oh, look at that stupid FOB, can't even speak English. I'm glad I'm nothing like that." Or it's evident when some CBC girl refuses to date Chinese guys, but dates only white guys as some sort of status symbol. By no means am I against interracial relationships, but it's wrong when it's only about status.
It's a bunch of bullshit when the CVC president said they didn't mean to use the term Honger in a derogatory way. It's almost ALWAYS used in a derogatory way. Give me a break.
Kim Ho said it best in the article, ""They are looking down at people who are not as fortunate as them to be able to learn English in an early age. It will mislead new immigrants into thinking that they will be teased for speaking English with an accent."
The ad mocks Chinese who are trying to adjust to this country. Sure, some Hongers deserve the bad rep for not learning English after living in Canada for 10+ years. But a lot of Hongers just look and dress Honger. Most are very proficient in English, more than enough to function in Canadian society. And last time I checked, this was a multicultural country. They shouldn't be forced to conform if they want to preserve a part of their own culture.

I think what you've said is true for a lot of people, but by no means the majority, and for that matter, I think it's changing too. I know a fair number of Hongers, and while some of them are of the type that refuse to be a bit open-minded and refuse to put some effort into learning (learning vs. adopting) "Canadian" culture, others have the best of both worlds and blend it all into some sort of Super Honger-Canuck that speaks perfect English with wit and sarcasm (!) and knows when to drop some Hong Kong slang (pork chop? lol).
Sad thing is, these guys aren't the ones who try to stand out or become very vocal. They just kinda cruise through society while wearing Bathing Ape and Taiga. |

They shouldn't be forced to conform if they want to preserve a part of their own culture. | The term "white" can also be viewed as a derogatory word as well, the proper terminology would be "Caucasian" or "Anglo-Saxon". The ad doesn't necessarily mock the Chinese population that are trying to adjust to Canada, have you seen most of the Chinese clubs at UBC? CVC by far stands out as a different type of "Asian Club". DSC, CCS, CSA anyone that walks by these booths can tell right away what kind of club they are, they cater to the Chinese population that would much rather be cliquey and mingle within their own race. Kim Ho is a person over analyzing the situation, I don't know about you but I was never made fun of growing up by "white" people. Many of my CBC friends and friends that have immigrated here throughout the years have had no trouble making friends with "white" people.
Who said anything about making them conform? I don't see that anywhere in this thread, no one is trying to assimilate and annex the Chinese population at UBC. Rather they are pointing out (in an interesting manner) that their club is different than the rest of the so called "Asian Clubs" on campus. Go walk by the DSC booth, the CSA booth or any other booth and you will find that they are not speaking English. If you don't look to be "Honger" they don't even talk to you if you're standing infront of their booth however, the moment a "honger" walks by they jump off their seat and try and get them to join the club. I am not being biased here, I have friends in DSC, CVC, CSA, CCS etc. It's what I have observed on campus.
Your whole idea of CBC's having a racial inferiority complex is moot, and your point of bringing up CBC girls dating "white" people versus Asian people was irrelevant to this matter as is CBC's sell out their own race. If you're born in Canada you are Canadian from Chinese decent, not Chinese. Many of the people in CVC that I know are not even CBC's.. they in fact possess dual citizenship many with Hong-Kong or Taiwan (meaning they are born there).

And you accuse other people of "over analyzing"? Please.
The CVC ad doesn't just mock the clubs themselves, it mocks Hongers as well. Don't try to pretend that the ad doesn't. So no, the issues that I brought up are not moot points.
In terms of other chinese clubs "excluding" non-Hongers, I really think it's more an issue of some CBC's and non-Hongers AVOIDING these Chinese clubs instead. While at UBC, some of my CBC friends who look down on Hongers would say, "I don't want to join CSA, only stupid hongers join that club. I wanna join CVC because the club is full of CBC's."
Of course, the chinese clubs know full well that most CBC's would much rather join CVC, and their target audience are Hongers. Hence, they spend most of their energy trying to recruit Hongers because they're more likely to be interested.
And also, I have seen a good number of execs at other chinese clubs who were CBC's, or spoke English the majority of the time. However, I have yet to see a CVC exec who was a complete FOB. So really, who is excluding whom?
Now, I'm not trying to demonize CVC here. They're good people. I just don't agree with looking down on Hongers.

Maybe you had a different experience growing up, which I understand. But a lot of times, racial taunting is a tit-for-tat sort of thing. Those "Are you even Chinese?" comments might stem from Hongers being taunted about having bad English. A defense mechanism of sorts to mask their wounded self-esteem.
When some Hongers avoid whites and CBC's, I think it's more so out of fear. Hongers don't avoid whites and CBC's because they look down on them, but because they feel uncomfortable around them. But very often, when some CBC's avoid Hongers, it's because the CBC's look down on the Hongers.
The whole Fresh Prince episode of not being "black enough" is interesting. It's an important issue down in the states. During the Jim Crow era, many black people in the states were ashamed of being black, due to the effects of racial taunting and prevalent negative stereotypes of blacks. Some would try to bleach their skin, make their hair straight, and thin out their nose to look white (ex. Michael Jackson). Brown v. Board of Education and desegregation of schools back in the 60's was decided partly on evidence that black children were proven to have low self-esteem, from an experiment that found that the black children preferred white dolls to black dolls. When asked why, the kids would say something like the white dolls were prettier, or the black dolls were evil. A racist society taught these children that it was always better to be white. Today in America, being an "Uncle Tom", looking down on your own race, and the effects of white privilege are still relevant issues.
Of course, chinese people today have it much better. Racism now is nowhere near as bad as it was back in the Jim Crow South of the 60's. But these are issues to consider when you hear some CBC's make fun of a FOB for being too chinese. Or when some chinese girl thinks it's a status symbol to date a white guy (again, I'm not against interracial dating).
I'm not putting all CBC's on the same boat here. They're not all like that. I just don't agree with looking down on Hongers.

CVC is a crock of shit, and so is every other "asian" club at ubc.
especially the names of the clubs so obviously give off the feeling of "ASIAN"
if some white dude tried to start a white club "the anglo saxon varsity club" or some black club, or some shit, they'd never let that.
it's bullshit. the cbc's at ubc already have their noses stuck up high. they don't need to congregate together and get even more high and mighty.
just look at the type of people in CVC. it's a joke.
most of them walk around like they're harvard MBA types or some shit. give me a break. cbc pride my ass, dog shit has more integrity than these fools.

it's bullshit. the cbc's at ubc already have their noses stuck up high. they don't need to congregate together and get even more high and mighty. |
I think there is a black club. Not quite "black club", but I think it's called the Caribbean Club or something, which is mostly blacks from the Caribbean I think. Or at least, everyone at the booth was black. One girl was pretty damn fine.
But an "Anglo-Saxon" club would probably be frowned upon because people might associate that with white supremacist groups. With other ethnicities, it wouldn't be a problem.
