Motor Trend tests ZR1

0-60 in 3.3
1/4 in 11.2 at 130.5 MPH
1.1g in the skidpad
200.5 top speed

A little quicker than the 3.4 0-60, 11.5/128MPH 1/4 and 1.07g that Car and Driver recorded. Although Car and Driver did say the ZR1 recorded the shortest stopping distance of any production car they've ever tested.

I wonder how many times the ZR1 can do a 0-60 before needing a new transmission?

what an outrageous car...

b-dub 10-23-2008 12:14 AM

The problem with the Corvette is that, sure it's got alot of power but it doesn't have the same ability to lay down all that power like the GTR and it's much harder to exploit the power because of the RWD layout. Corvette has always been known to be a high horsepower car, front engine and RWD. This has always been the tradition and the fanboys have stood behind it for years.

Now that all the high performance cars that are coming out have excess of 500hp, the AWD format is superior compared to RWD especially since they can make the AWD systems flexible where they can control up to or close to all the power to the rear wheels and only activate the front wheels when the car is slipping. This makes Corvette a victim of it's own image. I can't imagine Chevy making the Vette an AWD car...

Also, let's not forget what the GTR was designed for, going around corners really fast, which is what it does well in. It just happens that it's also fast in a straight line.

I don't think it's fair to compare the GTR to the ZR1, when the V-spec comes out next year, it should be a good battle.

PS, the tranny issue is blown out of proportion, AFAIK, the tranny's failed on two vehicles because the owners used the launch control feature on the GTR 35+ times while the car had under 1k on the odo.

I guess you forgot to read the ZR1 skidpad test of 1.1????

valent|n0 10-23-2008 08:30 AM

they test it using proper manual isn't it? or ZR1 also got super fast flappy gearbox?

I was watching national geographic GTR that were posted here, in the video they mention GTR gearbox can change gear in less than .1 second !!!

Why not? You GTR fanboys are always comparing the GTR to 911TT, Lambo, Ferrari and saying the GTR is faster.

Or do you admit defeat to a good 'ol Chevy?

unit 10-23-2008 09:12 AM

^you are the biggest fanboy of all on this forum... i hope you know that.

It's a 6spd manual, but considering the regular Corvette has a 1st gear tall enough to hit 60mph, for testing purposes, it's all about a good launch then just keeping it in a straight line.

Mattv 10-23-2008 09:18 AM

I think the GTR gets comapred to the 911TT alot to brag about the performance comparing to a superior car.

ZR1 is an amazing car.

Just because it scored high G's on the skidpad doesn't mean it's going to be fast around the track. Case and point. Viper, it pulls more G's on the skidpad than the GTR but it's still slower through the transitions.

LOL, please, the GTR's target was always the 997 Turbo, it just so happens that people also compare them to the other cars and the GTR won.

The V-Spec that will be coming out next year is in the same price range as the ZR1 and i'm almost positive that the car will lap the ring faster than the ZR1.

I will admit the ZR1 is probably faster than the GTR, however i'm pretty sure the V-Spec will be faster than the ZR1

Cool.
GT-R fanboys should get out of this thread.

Didn't you hear? Nissan already ran the V-Spec at the Nurburgring and pulled a 7:29. They just lied and told everyone it was the regular GTR.

Do you have a source for this information? I find it hard to believe since the V-Spec is still doing it's trial runs and it's not due to be out until next year.

If you get a chance to drive a GTR and compare it to a Vette, you will understand where I am coming from.

SpuGen 10-23-2008 11:51 AM

Did you get a chance to drive either one?

I'm not saying the GT-R isn't a fast car.
I'm just saying that the ZR-1 is faster without ATTESSA training wheels.

I drive my cars hard, and if I had the chance to buy either one, I'd rather have the clutch to be the weak point in the drivetrain like it should. Not the entire transmission.

I have driven both vehicles extensively before.

I'm going to assume you didn't read my previous posts about how the new generation AWD systems are superior, like the ones found in the R8, LP560, GTR, EVOX etc. They pretty much drive like RWD most of the time up until the point the wheels start slipping then, the power is routed to the front.

Like I said, Corvette is a victim of it's own muscle car heritage, the AWD format will be seen in more and more cars and I doubt corvette fanboys would buy a vette if it turned into a AWD car, it just doesn't fit the image, however that is subjective.

Also, the GTR transmission issue has been blown out of proportion, it has only failed on two vehicles in the US and that's when they abused the system by launching the car 35+ times within 1k on the odo. (as previously posted)

You do that to any car with a dual clutch system and it is bound to fail. Go onto bmw forums, ferrari forums and you will see that this has happened to F430s, M5, M6 etc and it's not just the GTR that has this problem.

I was referring to Z06, my bad.

SpuGen 10-23-2008 12:47 PM

The ZR-1 and the V-spec are different beasts.
It's like saying an STi is the same as a WRX.
Or a 330 is the same as an M3
Or saying KA-T is better than SR20.

Does not compute.

kumbo1 10-23-2008 04:11 PM

Just to remind people, ZR1 and the ZR-1 are not the same vette, therefore plz do not confuse the two..thanks!
