for one of my class, a hard copy and a soft copy is needed.
soft copy is submitted via turnitin.com
i just have a question though. If you're only handing in a hard copy, is it possible for the prof to get that through turnitin? do you just scan it and submit? and VOILA.. if plagiarism is there you're caught?

turnitin.com pointed out one of the sentense in my last assignment is similar as some paper handed in from some random paper handed in by another student in a random school from china.

^^^
Well, you'd know if you plagiarized, unless you paid someone else to do your work. It's more of a teacher's tool. You could always see if something you did plagiarize shows up on there, to see if its safe to use

Turnitin.com is very picky...say if you have like 1 or 2 sentences that's similar your prof wouldn't give a shit. But if it's like a passage that's identical and you didn't put it down as a reference..then you're fucked.
I know UBC/SFU pay big bucks to turnitin.com to use it.
Don't plagarise people... it's not worth it to get suspended kicked out over it...just added it to your reference and your ass is covered.

Anyone ever thought of the copyright implications with the use of turnitin.com?
They're basically using papers submitted by students to make their money. The more papers submitted, the more papers they have in their database.
Hmm..just a thought..

What's retarded about this is the random coincidences these sites may catch. The teachers usually let a few lines here and there go but if you somehow coincidentally have the same paragraph as someone else, you'll get blamed for plagiarism and sent to the office and detention, warning points, thread locked then banned.

i thought there was a student in mcgill who brought the university to court, saying that he refuses to turn his paper into the site - because it automatically becomes the property of turnitin.com. afterwards, the university stopped using the site... not sure about now.
not sure if its mcgill or somewhere else.

like s13 coupe said, unless you copied the paragraph straight to your paper without
citation, you are screwed.
Profs are people as well, they don't have time to read every single word or care about
one or two sentences that look identical to another. Just learn how to paraphrase and
citation, then you are safe.

I love turnitin.com... it gives proffs the confidence that your work is not plagerized and they're mainly looking for direct copy of senentces. If you change a few words or add a reference to that sentence but you keep the same idea, it will filter right through. Key is to not copy and paste.

even if you change the words around but keep the same idea... turnitin will filter through it?

^ then what's the point of going to school or researching in a library if you can't use the ideas?
they just don't want people to copy word for word without citation
