Eh.. Only good for google use.

Dr-Vn 11-25-2008 11:10 AM

turnitin.com is bigger than that i think.

checks all databases and previous work submitted by all those institutions who uses it

jasperlin 11-25-2008 11:10 AM

dude, they've got way more sophisticated things than this now... well not even now, back 5 years ago when i was in first year. www.turnitin.com your prof would make you hand your shit in.. then your shit gets added into the database as well so your friends can't cheat in the future

hotjoint 11-25-2008 11:24 AM

damn, sneaky!

they still use it.

for one of my class, a hard copy and a soft copy is needed.
soft copy is submitted via turnitin.com

i just have a question though. If you're only handing in a hard copy, is it possible for the prof to get that through turnitin? do you just scan it and submit? and VOILA.. if plagiarism is there you're caught?

Boostaholic 11-25-2008 12:02 PM

turnitin.com pointed out one of the sentense in my last assignment is similar as some paper handed in from some random paper handed in by another student in a random school from china.

yameen 11-25-2008 12:06 PM

you can see if you plagiarised before you submit your assignment?

Presto 11-25-2008 12:13 PM

^^^

Well, you'd know if you plagiarized, unless you paid someone else to do your work. It's more of a teacher's tool. You could always see if something you did plagiarize shows up on there, to see if its safe to use:)

maybe your english was at the level of a chinese fob ...haha
KIDDING :)

twitchyzero 11-25-2008 01:23 PM

Turnitin.com is very picky...say if you have like 1 or 2 sentences that's similar your prof wouldn't give a shit. But if it's like a passage that's identical and you didn't put it down as a reference..then you're fucked.

I know UBC/SFU pay big bucks to turnitin.com to use it.

Don't plagarise people... it's not worth it to get suspended kicked out over it...just added it to your reference and your ass is covered.

ws6ta 11-25-2008 01:37 PM

wow thats crazy. i would have failed high school if my teachers used something like this :lol

EFifty3 11-25-2008 01:54 PM

Anyone ever thought of the copyright implications with the use of turnitin.com?

They're basically using papers submitted by students to make their money. The more papers submitted, the more papers they have in their database.

Hmm..just a thought..

BNR32_Coupe 11-25-2008 01:59 PM

What's retarded about this is the random coincidences these sites may catch. The teachers usually let a few lines here and there go but if you somehow coincidentally have the same paragraph as someone else, you'll get blamed for plagiarism and sent to the office and detention, warning points, thread locked then banned.

3xta 11-25-2008 02:06 PM

whatever, i dont copy other peoples papers, and that website only works for online sources. Just go to the library and borrow a book

gars 11-25-2008 03:25 PM

i thought there was a student in mcgill who brought the university to court, saying that he refuses to turn his paper into the site - because it automatically becomes the property of turnitin.com. afterwards, the university stopped using the site... not sure about now.

not sure if its mcgill or somewhere else.

i loled.

asian_XL 11-25-2008 04:57 PM

like s13 coupe said, unless you copied the paragraph straight to your paper without
citation, you are screwed.

Profs are people as well, they don't have time to read every single word or care about
one or two sentences that look identical to another. Just learn how to paraphrase and
citation, then you are safe.

optiblue 11-25-2008 08:15 PM

I love turnitin.com... it gives proffs the confidence that your work is not plagerized and they're mainly looking for direct copy of senentces. If you change a few words or add a reference to that sentence but you keep the same idea, it will filter right through. Key is to not copy and paste.

you sure about that?
even if you change the words around but keep the same idea... turnitin will filter through it?

asian_XL 11-25-2008 09:38 PM

^ then what's the point of going to school or researching in a library if you can't use the ideas?

they just don't want people to copy word for word without citation

xyz123 11-25-2008 09:56 PM

hahaa, wow i had no idea of how teachers catch plagiarism until now...
