| Vancouver drug-smuggling kingpin gets 18 years in jail
A Vancouver man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for his role in a multi-national drug-smuggling ring.
Yong Long Ye, the former head of an organized crime group that operated out of the Lower Mainland, pleaded guilty Friday to conspiring to produce and export methamphetamine, import and traffic cocaine and launder the proceeds of crime and possess property derived from the commission of an offence.
He was sentenced to 18 years in jail, plus time served, and will forfeit six properties in Canada.
Four Canadian police agencies and police in seven countries investigated for a year to uncover the drug ring.
The investigation included a proceeds of crime component integral in the forfeiture of residential properties in B.C. and Ontario, as well as various other financial assets with a combined value expected to be in the millions.
“This clearly illustrates the seriousness of the offenses. The illegal drug trade affects people across local, regional and international boundaries. I would like to thank all the people and agencies involved for their dedication and hard work in disrupting this organization,” Supt. Doug Kiloh, officer in charge of Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, said in a news release.
“[Friday]’s guilty plea, sentence and property forfeiture clearly demonstrates that criminal activity is not a license to print money,” Chief Supt. Bob Harriman of RCMP federal policing, said in a news release. “Besides facing the prospect of significant jail time, assets gained through the proceeds of criminal activity will be seized or forfeited.”
Charges against several co-conspirators are still before the courts. http://www.theprovince.com/news/story.html?id=1097613 |

Wow... look at his run-ins with the police
Yong Long Ye's history with police
Kim Bolan, Vancouver Sun
Published: Friday, August 15, 2008
Prior to his arrest last December on international drug trafficking charges, Yong Long Ye had succeeded in beating a series of charges, according to a police affidavit filed in Federal Court:
Aug. 25, 1997: Calgary police stop Ye in a rental car near Banff and find a kilo of cocaine and 83 grams of heroin in the trunk. He is charged, but the charges are later stayed.
March 31, 2001: A woman linked to Ye rents an apartment on North East Kent Avenue in Vancouver. When painters arrive a day later, they find a box containing a .357 Magnum, ammunition, cocaine, ecstasy and heroin. The apartment manager seizes the box, which is given to police. The manager then gets a visit from Ye, demanding the box. Police find Ye's fingerprints on the cocaine packaging. He is charged and later found not guilty.
April 26, 2001: Calgary RCMP are waiting at the city's bus terminal to search a Ye associate who arrives from Vancouver. They find two kilos of cocaine with Ye's fingerprints on them. Ye is charged, but the charges are later stayed.
March 14, 2003: A man calls Vancouver police saying he has rented an east-side house to Ye and has discovered a growing operation. The landlord allegedly gets several threatening calls from Ye because he went to police. Ye is charged with extortion and assault, but the charges are stayed after the landlord flees the country and refuses to testify.
Sept. 7, 2005: Ontario Provincial Police raid a Scarborough penthouse owned by Ye and find a money counter and a plastic bag vacuum sealing machine, three suitcases containing $620,870 in shrink-wrapped plastic, ecstasy, ketamine and a handgun. Ye was charged, but the charges were later stayed

when charges are stayed it means the case is still open, he isn't found not guilty, so if new evidence is ever found they can bring it up again

His lawyer is Ian Donaldson, Q.C. One of the partners at Donaldson Jetté.
And yeah there are a handful of criminal lawyers who for the right price will make you the next teflon don.

I don't understand why some of you are surprised he had so many charges stayed. He's a DRUG KINGPIN and obviously has a cash flow like crazy. I'd probably get 5 charges stayed as well if I was ballin out of control and had the money to hire the best of the best to defend me.

^ the legal system needs to be like this- otherwise these drug lords will rule. They will just have corrupt cops working for them, and will just plant evidence on anyone they dont like or gets in their way, and without a fair trial-- innocent people will be fucked and go to jail. And it's always the argument of whats worst? Letting a guilty man go free, or sending an innocent man to prison.
