Your Job/Career

Just wondering that everyone does for a living and if you needed schooling for it.

My job title is "JR Business Analyst". I basically test stuff that the developers make for our collections system and report errors to them and give them tips/advice on what I think should be added/removed from certain projects. I was hooked up from a friend that worked in the dept so I didn't need any schooling for it. I taught myself basic SQL to run queries to pull up data. The rest was hands on stuff that I learned from being on the floor as a worker in my previous role. Great pay and I work close to home, couldnt ask for anything more :)

Been working as a System Analyst for about three years now and am still enjoying it. I went to Langara for four years because I took my time and was doing co-op as well.

Programming was fun for me but I needed interaction so that's why I didn't pursue that career.

I'm the IT guy at a medium-sized office. This is what I've wanted to do since high school finished. I didn't graduate, so technically, I'm a dropout, i guess. I was hired, mainly, because of attitude, and my work experience (5 years retail / 5 years tech support). Best job ever. Depending on the job, i would say employers care more about experience than education.

I bought a place 5 min away from work because I knew i'd be here for awhile. Surprisingly, or not, I rarely make it work on time. I have the luxury of sleeping in a bit. My supe doesn't mind, he can't make it to work on time, either. He has no expectations for other IT staff to be on time. :)

I work for an american company i cannot name, but I'm one of the fulltime Power Engineers on-site, I also control the quality/haccp management team...and i am the on-site first aid.
They pay me well hourly, so i don't complain. Got my own office with 3 wall windows on the 6th floor facing richmond.

I work for a collections agency thats about 15 mins from my house, even though it was a five dollar pay cut from my old job (Construction-Glazing). The commision makes up for it :)

Basically my target could be 10, 000; Ill collect 1,000 and get 50 percent towards my target as "fee"... once ive collected 10,000 anything i make over that I take 20 percent on. So if I collect 15,000 I get $1,000 take home which really isnt that hard if you're good.

I was sick of getting up at 5am to commute to North Van and I grabbed this job as an in betweener before I head to school for business management, surprisingly its the best job I've ever had! I basically harass bums for money, being able to learn how to use, manipulate, and control people is going to be a useful skill, for instance... I've convinced a bum who live out of her shitty car to drive down and pay me 500 a month or else ill "sue her" (yeah right)... Pretty sure she doesn't get her money legitly...

BTW if you ever have any debts in collections just tell the collector you have 30% of whatever you oww (If you owe 10,000 offer 3,000) on the third last day of the month... Collectors will be so desperate for commission theyll close your account out for that much but MAKE SURE YOU GET A SETTLEMENT LETTER. Pay by the date stated and the amount stated or they will pretend like your agreement never existed, also dont bother trying to record convos, it wont hold up in court...

Anyways hope that helps

I'm a Senior Accountant for a local automotive group.

Accounting is boring. So I decided to at least do it in an industry I enjoy.

I've only been here a couple of months, so they have me learning a lot of things right now including posting vehicle deals in our system, preparing the financial statements and doing some ad-hoc analysis of results. As well, I do a lot of project-work in Excel developing reports and streamlining current tasks which use too much manual labour.

It pays well, and the work is mildly interesting now.

I graduated from Langara in Marketing

I work as an HR Advisor for a publicly traded utility company. My scope of work includes labour/industrial relations, employee engagement and retention, total compensation package design. I also work with the IT team to do testing with the new mySAP HCM systems.

I did my undergrad at SFU in BBA-Human Resources Mgmt, and I did my CHRP.

I get paid enough to make me relocate from rainy Vancouver to sunny Kelowna.. haha

I pretty much do everything except for programming. Though I'm just a CS-01 (goes up to CS-05) my manager been training me and showing everything from servers/backups/UPS... etc. and ofcourse helpdesk work as well. It's pretty board so I can't say that going to Langara had taught me anything. It's not what you know but your ability to stick it out and find a solution that impresses people (ie employer).

I used worked in that building across from HMV on Burrard and Robson, sweet view. But now I'm in Winnipeg and it's cold!

Don't you feel tired of being an asshole?

Lol, I say that with experience. I worked collections too, and I honestly can say I saw a difference in how I acted a few months after I been working there. It's like I was transforrmed into an asshole outside of my job too.

Work for a full service brokerage firm, licensed as a broker and also manage the accounts & anti terrorism/money laundering departments. Have my Financial Management diploma from BCIT as well as my CSC and CPH courses from the CSI.

Also run my own private security business catering exclusively to the entertainment industry. Client's include Hollywood Actors, adult entertainers, models, film/tv productions and record labels. No formal education, however being in good shape helps as well as being trained in various disciplines of martial arts. I also train in tactics and weapons twice a year with retired members of LAPD SWAT and Mossad.

I'm still a 1st year full time student at UBC's Applied Science's Computer Science faculty. I used to work as a busboy at T&T Supermarket $8.50/hr. Just recently I successfully earned my Real Estate Trading Services License and I'll be commissioned by my parents to sell a few of their properties next year first season. I'm 19.

By any chance, is anyone an Architect or Architectural Technologist at a firm? Or know any that's looking for a Junior Architectural Technologist? I'm wanting to move from Victoria to the mainland for a change...

I am/was also an IT guy for an office that had up to 40 people at one point. The company is currently being closed by the current investors, but may be bought out by a new group, so I'm just working as a contractor for the time being, but hopefully will be back to regular in a couple months.

Are you saying you didn't graduate high school or post secondary?

I actually did get a B.Sc. in computer science at UBC, but obviously that has absolutely nothing to do with being a systems/network administrator. That just came out of stuff I learned on my own through the years. I used to go to work at 10am... didn't like going in earlier than that, but I did work long hours when needed...

Last time I was in Vancouver T&T was a supermarket?
